Is yours drilled and tapped for the side scope mount? I have the "D". Also have one of the later 840's. scopes on both. The 340 is my favorite walking around gun. Both love the Lyman 173 fn. with 5744 at .311.
The 340 will shoot a 3 shot group under an inch/100, after you throw away the cold barrel shot. I still have not solved that problem, not that it is much of a problem for a hunting gun. Maybe a 1/2 inch out of group. The more you shoot it the more you will grow to like the light weight and quick handling.
If you decide to scope it, the turret housing has to be the size of the old weaver K series. Modern day scopes are larger so the side mount will have to be tweaked.
Check with Gun parts corp. Last time I looked they had the scope mounts and mags in stock. The only problem I have had is the firing pin had to be adjusted and polished a little. At the time they had those also so I got an extra.
Congrats and have fun,
Tony

Yes, I have been loading 30/30 for a long time. :)

No it is not D&T for side mount. (Making it a earlier gun than I first thought)

I loaded up about a doz of my cast RD Cup points ontop of 18.5g 4198. Should be 1550/1600 ish.

I have a couple hundred cases in the tumblers.

Looking for a peep site now.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
There used to be some decent peeps out there for the 340's. I personally like the Redfields and Lymans over the Williams, but Williams and some of the lesser quality off brands are what I see the most. The 340's often benefit from some judicious bedding work and a bit of trigger work if you are capable and can see the issues. Some of them shoot amazingly great for a "cheap" rifle.

Some years back, I picked up a Springfield version of the Savage 30-30 bolt rifle for $80.00. This rifles was near the end of production and it was not drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. I found a Lyman sight on Ebay, drilled and tapped the rifle for the sight and all is good. It is an accurate and reliable rifle with either cast or jacketed bullets. I could live well, if it was the only rifle I owned. It is worth your time and effort to root out a proper receiver sight.

They changed things thru its years. IINM ALL where drilled for peeps. The earliest 340s where NOT drilled for side mounts. (This one is not) Also IINM they started life in about 1949 or 1951. OBVIOUSLY A SN wasnt required till after 1968. This one is surely early as it also has no sn.

I found a Peep!!! Place in Canada has them in stock and I was able to grab one this AM! Elwoods EPS Sporting goods.

Heading to the range now. Gun git a good scrubbing but I did not remove form stock. Barrel was dirty nOt filthy.

The 340 started in 51' with the 325 , A ,B ,C being basically the 46,47, 48 , 49' . Parts were used up in 50 that weren't direct parts in the new guns .

Each significant change got a new letter and by C there were enough to warrant a new model number .

I don't remember when D&T became standard . My 325 has a White peep sight side mounted . It is as innovative , and cheap , as the rest of the rifle . The 340 222 is circa 84-86' and was D&T and has a side mounted scope mount .

I've been tempted of late to try an FP 70 as I have a couple laying around .

You might find a serial number when you remove the stock. I don't know what Savage did? But I had a springfield 22LR which had a hidden serial number (covered by stock).

Ejection port is short? Get a Dremel, that is a quick fix. Bubba has videos on YouTube that will set you on the path.

340 Savage is a pretty decent rifle.

I did alot a reading on this gun and uts oredesessors last Spring, researching the "project 340" I still have. There is a couple very good indepth articles explaining allot about the variants years and how to tell them appart. Like all makers parts from previous models always make it into the first "so many" of the next model. But usually something diffinitive allows one to establish what version of what model one has. In this case its undoubtably a early gun. No SN, is a start. But NO D&T for side mount, safety trigger and wheel asjust, Dorbendorph rear site are more solid proof this is a early /first model 340. Ill place it 1950's. More searching may narrow that down. (IIRC my progect 340 was tetermined to be a "D" gun) The last model "E" where easy as the magazine went truly flush eliminating the "finger reliefs" to pull the mag. The "C" & "D" where whats left as we know its not a 325 nor later still 840. Near as I can tell all where tapped for the peep.

Strange that you mention having to seat bullets deeply Kevin as in those stories the author mentions that these guns had quite a bit of freebire not unlike the Weatherbys and he was always able to single load pretty long cartritages. (Magazine still ultimately limits OAL as they do always)

The gun got a good rub down last night with OOOO wool and oil. The stock it now exceptional sans one scar in its forend left side. It feels like a fine old rifle. Its trigger while a but heavy us a clean break. I want to "rub" a but more on the barrel and receiver. The receiver has much wear it saw rust and pitting has scarred much if its top. Probably from a hand carrying it then no oil cloth treatments. Its bore was a bit darker then I like but much rifling was present. BUT my roommis in a shambles with the expansion so poor lighting, no bench so make ahift cleaning and inlroper ability to examint true condition of the bore. BUT proof lies in the pudding and Im liking the way it shoots first time out! I put about 50 rounds thru it of five different loads. Just three rounds of jacketed, 5/7 of lubed lead and remainder powder coated. I haven't looked again since.

No Ian, Ill likely NOT D&T this one. I thought possibly one base forward of the ejection port on the receiver ring and a small reflex red dot... But it would be odd on this gun and the way I was able to shoot it with irons, I am gonna say it wont be necessarry once the peep is mounted.

I pulled bown my barrel of 30/30. While I didnt think I had too many it was a big barrel and I had a couple hundred. I deprimed all and trimmed all last night. Maybe 1/3 needed it. Oddly many where 2.10 or less. (None under 2.03) If ya dont remember, 2.30 is TTL. .020 is quite a variance. I wonder with such a long nect that bit will make a difference in neck tension? Im gonna say not at all with PC as they really seem to have quite a bit of that. At keast every one I have attempted to pull resulted in side cutters and a ruined bullet.

I have wanted a 30/30 cast gun for some time!! I have a few levers and while they shoot fine. Just dont lend them selves well to bench shooting. I like a Single shot or a bolt best. Shooting this gives me ideas for the project gun and also keeps me intrested as its sat for a few months. I had pondered rechambering to K Hornet. I believe I will do that just for case life and dureability. (I also have anoher K so have reamer, dies and brass)
