I decided to leave my " Boomers " at home today.
I took my Handi single shot , 30-30 Win.
In the past , it has been deadly accurate.
It has had a good bit of chamber work done.
I sent it out to John Taylor , Taylor Machine to have the chamber trued up
and a complete new throat put into the barrel.
John suggested a throat with a 1.5 degree taper.
He said he had seen some very accurate cast bullet .30 cal. barrels done
with the 1.5 degree. I told him to " Do It " !
I don't regret the decision .

Not too long ago, I bought this 311359, see link below for pics and details :

http://www.artfulbullet.com/index.php?threads/lyman-311359.1239/

I had loaded 20 rounds with the Lyman 311359 in neck turned 30-30 brass with the 311359, sized to .310" with 7.0 grs. of B'Eye with a Wolf Large Pistol primer. & .014 " thickness Al g/cs that I make. Scope is a fixed power Burris Fullfield 6X.
20 rounds fired @ 50 yards.

Hijo la, Senor! That critter can SHOOT. Of course, its director had a bit to do with that, too--both at loading bench and at the range site. Strong work, Ben.

Allen,

40 years ago I enjoyed going to farm ponds that had big turtles.
Some would weigh 25+ pounds.
This load would have been nice to use on those turtles.
You could have made them have a " Bad Hair Day ! ! " with this load.

Thanks,
Ben

I find it interesting that many people believe that a 30-30 is a rifle
that can only shoot groups the size of the mouth of a coffee cup.

I've not found that to be the case at all with my many 30-30's in the past.
In the accuracy dept., this particular rifle can shoot right along side many of my other .30 cal. rifles.

Ben,
I agree! Not only can it be accurate but deadly. I have seen more deer harvested around here with 30/30 than any other caliber. The ones that run away and are trailed usually are due to shot placement. I love the 30/30, I have a Marlinn and I want a Savage 340 too.

Good shooting on a beautiful day. Is your range behind the house? Mine is!

Well Ben....I don't know buddy ..you said 20 rnds..I can only count about 8-9 holes...;)

That's got to be fun shooting..

BTW you beat me to trying the 359 in a 30-30..sure looks like it works...

As for the accuracy of a 30-30, especially with cast ,there just aren't a lot of guns out there chambered in 30-30 that can bring out the best in the round..
my 54's are ok..but I bet a Ruger #1 would be better...that handi seems to be showing the real potential of the round....

John does some amazing work..I've got to ship out a '94 with a slightly bulged chamber for him to reline..the sad part he only has 1-10 liners

Once again ..GREAT WORK BEN

Wore that hole out, didn't you Ben?

Don't forget about that 100-grain plain-based Lee bullet with the tapered round nose, those ought to shoot even better in that rifle's new throat.

Dandy loading & shooting, Ben.

That bullet looks weird in a 3030 case but, can't argue with your target about it working well.

It seems you have more than one spray painted rifle, I like it.:)
They can't all be pretty wood can they?

Great group. That little 311359 is great in my 30 carbine. Haven't tried 30/30 because all mine are LA's but it also works in 308.

I use the 311359 in my SKSs. It feeds flawlessly and is accurate to boot. I went Tuesday, but it is rainy and very windy here today, boo hoo. :(

Fine shooting..especially with a H&R in 30/30. I've got a lot of respect for the break open single shots.
It's amazing what can be done them with the right loads, and of course, the right person pulling the trigger.

That little rifle deserves to go hunting!!!

Dan,

I always said that I'd build a hvy barrel 30-30 built on a Rem. 788 action.
I'm running out of time at age 67.
If I'm going to do it, I need to get on with it............. ? ?
