Getting Acquainted With My New .38 Super

Thought I might as well chime in .... I too have a 38 Super, sort of.

It actually is a slightly tricked out ( as in ambi safety, mag well, target sited, extended mag release, bever tailed safety) WHEW!,
1911 Colt in 9mm.

I had two Briley barrels and bushings mated to it, one in 9mm the other 38 Super, I also have a set of springs for it.

Some how I also managed to scrounge up a dozen mags for both calibers.

The interesting part is that one of the mags is for 10mm, it is one of the best feeding mags I,ve got for that gun.

The 38 Super is a great caliber, especially for IPSC as it can be loaded to operate the Comp race guns and allows for high cap mags.

As for a "konck around" piece I yet have to find any practical advantage over the 9mm.

I find the three? rim sizes to be a little annoying.

Would I ever get rid of it ? NO , it's just got too much cool factor.

Oh yeah, there's no big ballistic advantage of the Super over the 9mm. But the "cool factor"was just too high for me to resist. I've read of folks with barrels for both using the Super mags successfully for both, and a couple of folks have reported firing 9mm in Super barrels without apparent problems. Not to be recommended, but nice to know if you were ever in a real pinch.

I think the only way that can hurt is that it may shave metal and lube off of 9mm bullets in the chamber end ledge, building up enough debris to interfere with chambering Super cartridges afterward.

I've been shooting 38 Supers since early 80's, got two 1911's. If they are properly hand loaded within SAMMI specs, they will exceed the performance of 9mm SAMMI specs in MY guns based on my chron and shooting tests. The best shooting for me is with Hornady XTP's 115 or 125 gr. I've even got a C96 chambered for 38 Super, shoots great. I switched to the 38 Super Comp brass years ago to help feeding in the high cap mags. OP has a really nice looking 1911, snappy grips.
