Hurricane Harvey

My thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been effected by this storm. Devastating to see the degree of flooding in Texas.

No doubt. I can't imagine 2-3 ft of rain in a few days.

I know of a couple members who are re lucky to not be 50-75 miles closer to the coast.

We didn't get a drop from Harvey here, and the eye broke up about 65 miles from my house yesterday. A front kept it mostly east of I-35. I have some good friends in CC and the Victoria area, haven't heard from any of them since the storm but they all were on fairly high ground so it's power/sewer/water issues for which I know all of them were well-prepared. One college buddy runs the lab at one of the refineries on the CC ship channel, I imagine his workplace is shut down for a bit, I'll have to give him a call here tonight and see if it looks like our gasoline supply up here is going to be interrupted. Due to the influx of refugees in my area and total shut-down of the normal supply chain of goods coming from the coastal ports, there could be a good bit of fallout for those of us that were near the storm but missed the immediate effects.

Sept. 10, 2021 Steve left us. You are missed.
Quite a mess. Sometimes I forget that not everyone lives in the hills like I do.

I've lived in Tornado Alley and on the Gulf Coast before, didn't take me long to leave either place.

I left Houston in May and do not miss it. So far, all of my friends and former neighbors are OK.

You got out just in time, Tony. How's it feel to be in the mountains now? I know you're getting wet, but at least the rain has somewhere to GO.

Ranch Dog reports that the house is dry but he has to cross about 40' of 8-12" water to get to the main road .
That's about 90 miles ESE of San Antonio . He posted a Doppler map with a pin in the eye and a pin on the house with 600 ' between them .

Crockett Tx reports that it is a slopfest on the clay roads but it's all running off still .

I saw tonight that that Harvey's made a U turn followed by a left and is headed for New Orleans to finish up what ol' Kat started .
I sure feel for them but I can't imagine just slapping up some plywood and sitting it out .........but where do you run to .....

Still waiting on reports myself, I have a feeling comms are down in a lot of areas as cell phone voicemails and emails are going unanswered at the moment.

Ian,

Living here is mostly what I expected. Humidity is worse than I thought. Harvey has not impacted us according to the meteorologists in Little Rock. This is a subject for another thread but there are some BIG deer here. 150+ B&C.

Looks like the hobby airport, looking north toward down-town with the NRG stadium to the NW. Anyone want to buy an A-320 cheap?

We have family that lives in Richmond, about 30 miles WSW from downtown Houston.

They are not in a flood prone area, but said water got up to within about a foot below the house.
Good news, it drained off pretty quickly before each wave of rain.

They lost power yesterday afternoon, but have propane to cook with and they stocked up on food and water, so they should be okay.

They said the worst part for them was not the rain, but the wave after wave of tornadoes that came thru.

They have two small children and were told by authorities to stay in place. Once they realized how bad it was going to get, it was too late to leave because all the roads were underwater.

It's very frustrating not to be able to get to them to help or get them out. I feel like I have to do something, but know there is nothing I can do for a few days.

They are a lot luckier than many people down there.

I have a friend in Refugio that I spoke with Friday. He said he was going to ride it out.

The eye went right over them and I haven't been able to contact him since Friday.

I can only wait.

Daughter & family is in Houston, OK. Big mess there. Blue sky today but who knows. They are going to need a ton of DEET in the next few weeks. Talked to a couple guys in KC that ere cleaning up the mess there, they thought they would head to Houston at the end of the week. I got to NAS CC the day after Carla, spent a while picking up the base and chasing longhorns off. Pull your watch cap down over the face and run fast to the next building. Like that character in Peanuts, cloud around you - but they bite. Insurance is going UP - UP like after Katrina. Suspect they will just doze a lot of the areas, can't clean up much of the stuff anyway. Hope the guard keeps the looting down. Was in KC when the 51 flood hit, wiping out most of the packing plants & mfg. by the river. Actually Dad got me a 37 Ford motor from one of his trucks that had been in the mud for 10 yrs. Head studs were rusted bad & bored it 60 over but the rest was OK.

Searching online it seems the airport photo is a hoax.
No matter what they have too much work after and no place to go with it.

Hope you don't get too much Rick.

Sure is, apparently that's La Guardia with a 25' sea level rise photoshopped onto it. Sure looked like Hobby from first glance. It did seem odd that Delta had so many planes there, they don't have much presence at all in Houston, barely have two flights from Hobby.
