Marlin 1895 .45-70 chronographed data

Shot my 1895 Marlin using the RCBS 325 U and the Lyman 457193. At 200 yards I quickly discovered that the lighter bullet was just as accurate as the RCBS 325...so I compiled some Chronograph statistics using it. My target was a 2 lb coffee can (4.5 x 6.5") on a cable at 200 yards. I hit it more than I missed it after I zeroed it in.

Load Bullet Rifle Velocity Std Dev
13.0 Red Dot 325 RCBS U 1895 1,217 21.70
14.0 Red Dot 325 RCBS U 1895 1,287 12.80
14.0 Red Dot 325 RCBS U 1895 1,283 7.61
15.0 Red Dot 325 RCBS U 1895 1,313 15.90
16.0 Unique 325 RCBS U 1895 1,310 16.00

14.0 Red Dot Lym 457193 1895 1,182 8.71

15.0 Promo 325 RCBS U 1895 1,340 -

--------------------------------------------------------------
My cast Lyman manual shows....no loads given using Red Dot or Promo

Lyman Manual 14.5 Unique 457122 1895 1,295 -
13.5 Unique 457193 1895 1,163 -

Was wondering if any others have did this with theirs and would care to comment? All loads were mild in pressures. I did not up the powder charges, as from the chart, there is little velocity gain when increasing them. Going from 14 to 15 grains of Red Dot--yielded a measly 26 FPS.

Never used those powder in my Marlin. I tend towards 2400.

I will say that mine is damn accurate with the right load.

I haven't really chronographed the one I shoot it's been mostly some of this and some of those to see where the most promise is.

I've run some Unique up to probably 1400 or so , Trapdoor levels are quite enough for me .

I have never used pistol powders in any of my 45/70s. My most-used load is the Lee 405 grain bullet atop 28.0 grains of IMR-4198 for about 1275 FPS in both the Trapdoor and the 1895. I am down to my last 8#er of WC-860, so my duplexing days in 45/70 will be ending soon.

I'm probably the only guy in town here that doesn't use unique in his 45-70
I'm probably the only guy in the county who does. But, I know of only one other .45-70 shooter and he prefers
IMR 3031.

I dont believe I burned any unique in any of my 45/70's either!!!

XMP5744 as it was called when it started has been a TD load powder for me for a long time. Higher velocity loads where handles with 4198/re7. It just always worked well enough I had no reason to search for better.

I have used 3031 and H322 in my guide gun. I drive things a lot faster than you are talking about. 300 gr. jhp at 1880 fps. and 385 gr. Mountain Mould at 1700+. Either load gets your attention when you fire them.

In the past I have used 2400 with the Lyman 457483 (380 Grain RN-GC) that gave me up to 1,800 FPS. I scaled back, as I just wanted a load that would hit my targets at 200~250 yards. Using 13~14 grains of Promo worked very well for me. On my last range trip I was able to hit a 3.5" wide tractor oil filter (suspended on a wire) at 200 about 50% of the time, using Promo and the RCBS 325 U bullets sized to .460". My "chart" shows Std deviations from 7.61 ~16...which is very good in my book.

I use Unique because I've been trying to use up a 15# keg of Hercules for 20 yr . I don't shoot as much as I should I guess but I have about 8# left in a 12# keg of Red Dot and will soon start my 3rd 8# of 4350 .........

Being a "thrifty" guy, I bought up every new can of Bullseye, Unique and 2400 from yard sales and estate sales for 25 years. When I had the 45/70 "Cowboy Limited" it was 12.0 Unique for 300/330 grainers and 18.0 2400 for 400/415 grainers. No a single rock lives after being hit with the 45/70.

I wonder if they will do a run of 460s in one or the other . Seems like if one will will handle the 450 Marlin it should handle the 460 . Most of the data holds it down to 42 kpsi ......
