My new 30 caliber experiment

I’ve been wanting a plinking round with my ‘06 rifles so I’m trying the do it yourself route. This is a Lee mold that I used my 5/16”reamer to remove the GC base. While I was at it I D/T for a set screw on the sprue plate. The mold is advertised as .309” but this cast at .312” consistently and very round.

The lubed bullet is Ben’s red with a BLL bath sized to .310” I’m starting with 4.5 grs of BE. It’s going to the range Saturday . Can’t wait to see how it does.

probably right around 125grs now.
I think Ben has inspired a lot of us to do more plain base rifle shooting.
it's hard to ignore tiny little groups, no gas check money going out, and a pound of powder lasting 20 years.

If you enjoy shooting and you can get out often; there is nothing like shooting 50 to 100 of these "powder mizers" per range trip, at the "low velocity node"
and get them to follow each other into the common hole in the target!
Yes I think Ben is the father of all that!
I for one, have embraced it and really enjoy it. Thank you Ben!

...............Can’t wait to see how it does...........

I'll go way out on a limb and predict it will do quite well. I modified the same mould the same way in August and finally got to shoot some in September. I only had a few cast up and didn't have much time to play with them, but they are off to a good start in the 30-30.

LEE C309-313-02.jpg
Two unsized on the left, two sized on the right.

PB 309-113.jpg
Ten shots at fifty yards, 7.5 grains of Unique (1994 vintage), 2 coats of BLL, ACWW sized .310".

This was from a Contender carbine with a MGM 24" barrel, 1:10 twist. I was in a hurry and the two "fliers" were all mine. Have not chronographed them yet. Shooting very slightly lower than the 165 grain RDO with the same charge. As soon as I can clean up my bench I want to cast up a coffee can full of these.

EDIT: Oh, and yes - inspired by Ben.

I have the Lee "soup can" CB, both in the original GC and modified PB version*. While the GC version weighs 113gr. without the GC, the PB version is a mite heavier @ 116gr. Both are very accurate in my .30-06, but with very different powders and powder charges. Indeed, the GC version is accurate in a number of .30cal. rifles, metrics included.
