I well remember the first time I shot a Redhawk, a friend's stainless variant in 44 Mag with 7.5" barrel. He and I both loaded "full value" 44 Magnums at that time, and I was so impressed by the revolver's tractability with the 240 grainers at 1400 FPS that I HAD TO HAVE ONE. I got mine soon thereafter, and it has been along on some backcountry adventures ever since. One I recall vividly involved a pissed-off black bear in what turned out to be HIS blackberry patch in our local mountains. We never saw him, but Marie and I could smell him and hear him and his CHUFF CHUFF CHUFF very near at hand. The Redhawk didn't seem the least bit heavy at the time. That ol' bear definitely got the bulge on us that day.

This gun was my friends. He was the second owner. It only has 200 rounds through it! I traded him straight across for my Ruger Super Blackhawk in the same caliber, 44 Mag. I've had that for years and shot 1000's of cast loads through it. Never a single jacketed bullet. I liked the gun but was never super attached to it. The Redhawk always piqued my interest. All in all, I thought it was a fair trade!

Well, a bullet sized to .4313"-.4315" slide through the throats with just a little resistance. They seem pretty consistent.

Have you shot it with the factory grips? I got rid of those after the first session. That exposed backstrap, just digs into my hand.
I went though a multitude of grips before I found one I liked. "Uncle Mikes" rubber grips were the ones I finally settled on. Sadly, they are no longer made.

Gun is heavy, even unscoped. I can't even imagine the heft of a Super Redhawk.

My Super Redhawk is a monster. Mine has a 7.5 inch barrel and it is hardly a holster gun. It almost needs sling swivels for field carry.

A Redhawk will last forever. I think you are really going to like that as a shooter.

I'll find out tomorrow. I have some 429421's loaded mild with 10gr Unique. Some Lee 310gr loaded with either 2400 or 296, I don't remember. I also have some of my new bullets from an Accurate mold loaded over 19gr of 2400. These are 250gr. image.jpg

My Redhawk wears Uncle Mike's neoprene grip panels also. I tried out a BUNCH of grips before finding the Mike's. Ruger now offers OEM neoprene grip panels with some RH variants.

I was also under that impression until I got a Super Redhawk.

According to Ruger's website, the 7 1/2" Super Redhawk is actually 1 oz lighter than the 7 1/2" Redhawk (53 oz vs 54 oz for the Redhawk. It's all about the grip frame/stud.

My .480 Super Redhawk Alaskan weighs 42 oz unloaded (and about 8oz more loaded w/400gr slugs) on my digital kitchen scale.

The Redhawk and Super Redhawks that I've owned have been very accurate.

FWIW,

I got my Redhawk about one year after they were introduced. It is my "bad weather" deer pistol. I have taken three deer with it including my last deer and very nice 10 point Whitetail. I was using the LEE C430-310-RF (which Frank Siefer and I designed) ahead of 21.5 grs of H110. The deer was only 25 yards away so I broke it's neck with one shot. Bang/flop!

I predict you'll be very happy with the Red Hawk.

More revolver porn.

QD Warne mounts for a Kimber double lever base....can use open sights (V-notch/ gold bead) if necessary.

I took the 454 Cas. , 5" , Toklat to the range . I fired it about 20 times with a 2 X scope to minimize sighting error and help in finding out what the revolver liked.

At 25 yards ( fired off sand bags ) with 45 Colt brass and the 2 X scope, it shot a cylinder full ( 6 rds. ) into this group below, the load was 7.5 grs. of B'Eye with the H & G 245 gr. SWC,sized .4535" and lubed with Ben's Red , with Win. Large pistol primers :

I removed the scope ( after shooting the 25 yard group you see above ) and used the metallic sights at 15 yards ( free hand ) to shoot this group with the same load:

It is still early, I've only begun to scratch the surface. There are many powders, many different sizing diameters, many different cast bullet styles to go yet.

However at this point, I can tell you this is a smooth running machine !

One last note....the cylinders and bore were very clean and free of any lead deposits after firing the revolver with the Bullseye load.
