Just occurred to me reading this thread, I don't own a single gun that has the word "magnum" as a suffix to its caliber. My rammin' around in the woods gun has always been a Colt model P in 45 LC which sits very comfortably in a cross-draw holster over a front pocket of my jeans. I think if I were venturing into grizzly country I'd have to take the model '86 SRC in 45-70 or the model 71 348 Winchester.
Had a friend and partner while I was doing bodyguard work who carried a Ruger in 357 Magnum. I shot that a couple of times, but didn't care for the recoil. Always preferred carrying the 1911 in the Sam Browne when in uniform or in the shoulder holster when in plain clothes and usually carried the Colt DS as my backup.
The Sam Browne with the 1911, 2 spare mags, chemical mace, handcuffs, baton, Maglight in my sap pocket, and bullet-proof vest probably added up to an extra 15+ pounds. Didn't really seem that bad at the time and even now compared to the beer belly I'm carrying around, it still wouldn't be that bad.
