Is there a better cast cartridge than a 358 Win? Maybe a 30-30 or 45-70 but they aren't as good at longer ranges for hunting.

You guys do tempt me....

Out of curiosity..have you guys compared bore diameters on your 358 rebores?

Looking at those sexy bore riding bullets I'm wondering how they would fit in the various gun...

I know Mr. Target will tell the story ....but still curious what the numbers are.

BTW...Any article, threads, sites or comments I have come across regarding cast bullets use in the .358 have started with "The incredible accuracy I get"..

I'll try and remember to tap some of my bore riders in the muzzle and take photos when my rifle gets back to me from JES.

My 35 caliber rifles are my most accurate cast shooters. I want to get a 30 caliber that shoots as good but I think Ben already owns all of those.

Here's a 'pound cast' I did on my .35 Whelen Ruger #1 Jesse did. This is the area we need to fit to; whether using a bore rider or not. The land and groove diameters are what I requested down to a half thousandth!

Jesse (JES) knows his stuff and this 5 groove .35 Whelen is a shooter to prove it!

Hunt101.com is where my photos are at. Just one on my machine that is pretty old. I edit photos also with an old version of 'Paint' to ad info and dimensions in this case. I scanned the actual 'pound cast' to get a close.. close-up.

yeah,,,, I thought it was a piece of steel.

yessir that is the saeco 352.
mine pours to a click over .358, which is perfect.
since I would have, and do, size it to that when lubing and applying the gas check anyway..
it isn't my most accurate rifle by any means, but it will hang out in the 1" area with about 49grs. of RL-19 under that 250gr bullet.
I figured I should be able to hit a deer with that combination out to 200yds even in a 20 mph wind when I was putting the package together.
my buddy has used it in some deer culling operations a few times and every time I let him use it I have to go steal my own rifle back.
I have only used it to shoot an Antelope that was dumb enough to stand still at 120 or so yds.

I am holding off on the 03 as a 35 Whelen for now. I picked up a nice older model Rem 700 308 today so it will make the trip to Oregon.

JES and I had a good talk on the phone prior to me sending him my barreled action.
JES said that he'd used a variety of twist with the 358 Win. in past years.
He said that for the full spread of cast bullets up to the 300+ gr. bullets, he believed the 1-12 was best.

I went with his recommendation.
Several of these guys are going with 1-12:

I guess I'll find soon if it was a wise decision.

Just thinking this through a bit,and using irrefutable logic,a 338(most of them)use a 10 twist;a 375 H&H uses a 12.....what is it that happens between 338 and 375 that a 35 has to have a 14 or 16 twist?

they copied it from the center fire 32's which might have been used with black powder.

Your 12 twist should be a great choice in the 35. for a all bullet weight shooter...especially when it comes to the heavier 280 to 310 gr. bullets.

I love my 14 twist in my whelen, but feel it's a bit marginal with the heavies for sure.
I've seen the twist rate in the 35 bore(especially for the mid to heavy weights) described as 1/12 good to go...1/14 probably good through the heavy weights and a 1/16 as a maybe with the heavies.
