Opinion on Henry rifles

Sheesh! Buncha picky people we are here. It needs to chamber cast, shoot well, have a trigger that works (no China tuning either), AND we expect the lever to close all the way. Picky, picky, picky.

I'm not as picky about all of that, I just want a damn loading gate! Until that happens I won't even consider one.
I'm not picky, I'm selective.

Selective, Mata, mato, ya know.:) just razing while we wait for a working henry to reach Ian.

I will admit the brass frame was the first I picked up a few years ago when examining new ones. Kinda draw the eye. Those even closed all the way.

I was pretty much mind blown to have a major malfunction right at the gun counter, that's like opening the door of a new car for a test drive and having it fall off the hinges. But, it's not all that unusual for me. I seem to have gotten all three of the lemons NOE ever made, and all the undersized moulds Lyman ever put out. Not to mention both MP moulds I bought had major issues (Tomme Boy and Starmetal did have similar issues with similar moulds, though), the Kimber 1911 with the reverse-tapered barrel, the Winchester Model 70 with the .302x.310 barrel (one of the last ten made by Winchester), the Uberti open top with no rifling on one side of the barrel, the Friday afternoon Marlin 336, the M1A that mysteriously feeds 1/4" lower than any other, the self-destructing H&K UMC magazine springs, and don't even get me started on the basket case of an AR-45 upper that no one else seems to be having any trouble with. I really wish it were possible to test drive every gun I buy.

At least you got a good wife?

Oh my, yes. Not sure how I got so lucky with her but she's the best thing that ever happened to this guy by a HUGE margin.

Rick, I do collect stamps, just not the kind that the post office sells. What was very fortuitous was the rifle broke before they wrote the serial number on the 4473.

Gun shop called this morning and I went and picked up my new Henry! Will get pics tonight or this weekend, it's very nice with some figured walnut in the butt stock. Needs some polishing here and there on the insides and some grease on the sear but overall I like it. If it doesn't freeze me out tomorrow I'll sling some lead downrange and give a report.

Yep, looks like a lot more than one, maybe 1.5, which would make it 1:12 but that can't be right. I'll clean it tonight and double-check. I don't know where they dug this one up, but it is a 1st generation, probably at least six years old. The proof shot left a light copper haze on the lands which has turned turquoise and the bore is plenty dusty.

If it doesn't freeze you out? Expecting a low in the 50s again?

Glad you got one that functions. Nothing worse than a gun that doesn't.

What sort of loads do you plan on feeding it?

I am about to pull the trigger on a .357 Golden Boy. I read the good and the bad but I will try it out for myself.
I hope to get it next week.
