ordered a teslong borescope

Well I finally broke down and ordered one. I really only need one to check the bores to see if they need cleaned.

But, I assembled two new AR15s. One is done with all old leftover and removed parts. The other is completely new everything. And this one is one that has me worried. I have been seeing all kinds of people that have the same barrel maker as I used. It is a Ballistic Advantage 18" SPR in a SS 1-8tw that is melonited twice. QPQ is what they call it. It is quenched in the salts then the bore is polished and then quenched gain.

The barrels i have seen the problems with are the regular SS fluted barrels. I mean really bad. The latest one I seen over on ar15.com the leade is cut like normal them there is a hard ring and edge where it should be smooth. It looks like the reamer was oversized in the throat and it just shaved off the taper till it was almost down to the groove diameter. Almost like there was no taper ground into the reamer.

The guy says it shoots OK but has not shot it enough to see how bad it copper fouls. from what I see of it that bullet looks like it is getting shaved enough to rattle all the way down.

I have not seen any reports on this actual barrel that I have. All the melonited barrel test i have seen comes from their modern series which is their cheapest barrel. This one is their Premium Black series.

Hopefully you got the rigid one that comes with its own display screen and the angled mirror set.

No, I got the cheap one that plugs into my tablet. Just got it running and looked at several guns i had out. The one i was concerned with looks good. It has what looks like dried shellac in a couple spots. I know it is from the salt bath. It is some kind of treatment they do to it after it is dipped. It is extremely smooth all the way. I only found one spot about an inch long that looks like something dragged.

I looked at my 1944 M91/30. This thing has shot very well. almost as good as a couple of Finn M39 rifles I have had. I really need to do a carbon cleaning on this. It is really smooth with no defects anywhere on it. Other than the carbon about half way down the barrel. I am out of my old can of GM carbon cleaner. I have it soaking with a foaming cleaner right now. I will do this several times then move onto a carbon cleaner. I have a can of Barrymans I will try first with that.

I got the ridgid one that plugs into my laptop. These are great bore scopes. I love the angled mirror. You can get way too picky about what you are seeing, but it also provides alot of information you might not be able to determine otherwise.

Although, personally, I never look at my milsurp barrels with a borescope. It's like going around your house with a blacklight. There are some things you cannot unsee and in the long run will not cause any problems. Most likely this is a character fault of mine, not being able to ignore flaws in 100 year old rifles that shoot just fine. I use the borescope on all my gas guns. Lining up the gas block on the barrel is easy, and it's easy to see how much that gas port has been used on worn barrels.

This 125 year old rifle with issue rear and custom post sight shoots:

This brand-new varmint rifle with 12X scope did not shoot well with cast or jacketed (crown pitted from factory):

I need to take a couple pics. First I have to learn it more. I pulled out my best shooting AR. It has a barrel I got from Numrich. They had bought out the whole Sabre Defense Arms after being shut down by the BATF. It is a SS fluted 16" in 1-7 tw 556 chamber. They had not fluted the rear part of the barrel yet. And the gas hole was not drilled. So I drilled the gas hole and was a little off. I wanted to see how far off it was to the gas block. It was not bad. For $30 + shipping I am still happy with it. The inside looks like it is lapped it is so smooth.

Ian,

I saw your post when you got your angled mirror set. That got me interested and I looked up the Teslong bore scopes on Amazon but the different models left me with a question.

Can you use the rigid model in a revolver, or would it be too long and unwieldy?

I bought a cheap flexible shaft endoscope years ago, but it is practically useless as the resolution is so poor. Shoving it down a rifle barrel made it obvious that the rigid shaft would be better in a rifle. But with age, my eyesight is so poor I would like to look into shorter barrels too.

It's fine for pistols and short barrels, especially if you use the correct diameter angled mirror so it stays centered and also fine tune your focal length to the caliber.

The lenses that are close to bore diameter,,are so worth the extra expense!! The picture is so much clearer, and much more defined..must have...
