Over weight for caliber

Enter the Savage 06' I had with a measured over and over 8.5" twist from the factory in 1965 . It shot GI M2 ball well enough but it ran the stupid long 230&250 5R types too. There is also a reason the 225 and 250 gr RNSP hasn't been a standard available weight since 198? aside from not stabilizing well in the more common 10" twist . The change in mind set about how to get and keep the KE isn't it . The game is drifting away from the hunt now it's all about wind dwell time .

Just because the .355/.357 cal has a 1-16 standard twist across most of the industry doesn't make 200gr bullets a standard across the caliber . It probably wouldn't fit in a 380 mag , the 9 mm would become a 38/200 pretty much where the 38 Special would rock it just because it would still have room for the 18kpsi powder charge .
My 358 Win only has a 1-14 but dotes on the 250 gr RCBS while it goes against most of my learning I think at 2150 fps it would be fine as long as the operator did their part on the medium brown bears and moose .

Just because it will stabilize in the industry standard twist doesn't always make it the right answer .....the industry has made some bad choices. Take 1-30-1-38 twists in 44&45 cal for example .......

CW--

I have one of those 8mm monsters as well. It shoots pretty decently from my G98/40, but if your prompt it along at 1800-1900 FPS it will let you know that the primers functioned--and that Mannicher's steel buttplate will amplify the message capably.

I'd have to check my notes, because I only shot it once with this bullet and I am betting I use 2400 probably 17g or so. But I do remember it shot pretty well. I'm gonna let these up for a while before I load them. I cast some in my slightly harden range scrap, and some in 20 to 1

Hey CW
I have an 8mmMax mould but I have seen THAT particular bullet also called the 8mmMaximum
What is the designation of that particular mould?

I just pulled the mold out. NOTHING! Not a mark on it!

Its the older LEE Alum single cav With the roll pin and two "V" bars on sides.

Another one is the 170g 6.5 Lee mold.

I happened ta buy together with this 240g .323.

THAT mold is stamped "OLDFELLER"
For the guy on CB who "commissioned" them?

Yeah

I think OldFeller was the one who also designed the Karabiner and Maximum
The max has an extra lube groove, I think the only difference

Yours is, I believe the first HEAVY 8mm GB through LEE

I believe it was designed to jam fill the CIP throat of the 8mmX57 throat

The original 7×57 and as a result every 7mm since has a 1-8.5 or 1-9.5 twist for a 175 gr RN FMJ . The 8.5 should have no difficulty with a180 Spitzer . The Mountain Mold calculator would show a 250 as stable with twist to spare . Whether or not you could close the bolt is another matter. The cast would have been almost 2" long .
Sierra recommended a 1-8" twist for the 180 gr MK BTHP. Works out I have a 1-8.5" .
In the market there is almost nothing above 150/154 gr . No biggie but there almost aren't any moulds either .
