Plain Base 31141 HP

I have plenty of .30 cal. gas check moulds .
I decided today to take one of them, a nice single cav. Lyman 31141 HP mould and remove the gas check shank and turn it into a plain base mould.
Shooting these at 1,100 - 1,400 fps will make a nice shooting bullet for
my grandson. They will save on the expensive cost of gas checks and greatly speed up the lube and sizing process. I didn't want an explosive HP pin design, only enough to get the nose to open up a bit on impact. I size these to .311. A nice looking bullet that has been around for a very long time.

Ben; did you hollowpoint the mold as well or just relieve the gas check shank?
BTW, very nice looking cast.

Gary,

Buckshot ( Rick Tunnel ) did the HP work years ago.
The only thing that I did was to remove the g/c shank on the mould.

Thanks,
Ben

Ben,
I’ve removed the GC shank on a aluminum mold but I’ve been reluctant to try it on a steel mold. Yours looks great, did you use I drill press? You have inspired me to be more courageous about trying it. That bullet is generally a good shooter in most any of my 30 caliber rifles.
Thanks,
Malcolm

I used a super sharp 5/16" drill bit.
I go to extra pains with a small square to go " 360 " around
the drill bit to insure that it is entering the mould at a perfect
90 degree angle.
I slow down my drill press to the slowest speed.
Set the stop so you are removing the gas check shank only.
The mould is held so that it cannot move during the drilling.

Everyone tells me that the removal of a gas check shank in a bullet mould is done much better with a multi flute reamer. Probably true.

Ben,
It appears that that bullet can group regardless of powder!

I happen to like a HP for target work...It seems to give tighter groups then the solids!
Yes extra work for just punching paper however if that is what you do ( That is what I do) the more accurate version is the best.
I have tested the different HP pins I made for some of my mould.... ( that came from a special friend!;)) and I found that a 1/3 deep pin ratio appears to be the most accurate.
These were with Lyman 311467 and 311291 bullets
Sometimes if the berms are just wet enough and there is no one on our range shooting I can recover some very nice mushrooms!
