single pass check maker

I found a old coping saw I had forgot about. I deepened the slot a little bit. It is making good checks now but the flashing is still getting cut off on that back edge. And then it bends up the flashing and you have to use pliers to get it out. I am not going to cut it anymore as there is hardly anything left of the wall.

Still have not heard back from him and he has not read my message yet.

I've noticed some complaints on his dedicated FB group. Besides people waiting a long time, there hasn't been replies to Messenger messages or emails. A lady (his wife?) posted the best way to contact him about problems was by Phone.

No. The checks are too high. They are being swaged into the lower band. This is the makers mess up as to the size the aluminum gets cut first. It is making the disk too large of diameter. Probably why the strips were cutting off the edge to begin with.

I sent the guy some images. Will see what he says. He finally got back to me about it cutting the edge off and jamming up the strips. Told me to take a hack saw and cut it deeper. So I did as he said. There is a very small sliver left of metal holding it together now.

the discs are too big around, and they are trying to go up past the shank.
those look a lot like how the old ideal slip on checks used to go on all the way up the shank.

They are bigger than those. I had some that came in a box of stuff I got at an auction. They are almost double the height of the aluminum ones I got from Sage.

Pretty sure I am done with this. Will see if he will make another one or refund me.

I got a hold of the guy finally. He is going to make another one.

I did some measuring on the checks it is making.

0.1105" tall
0.3500" I.D.

sage check
0.064" tall
0.3334"- 0.335" I.D.

bullet shank is 0.342" OD and 0.79" tall

He made me one a year or so ago and it did the same thing. He tried to say it was the way I was trying to use it that was the problem. After about 6 weeks and several emails and some pretty rough language he did refund.

Got the replacement yesterday. They are the right size this time. He listened to me about the anvil side with the slot cut and the O.D. Now there is a lot of meat left for support. But it is getting jammed up on the anvil in the bottom die. You can't feel it jammed up till it is really a mess.

Not sure on how to stop this. Would a little lube wiped on the flashing stop this or would that be a problem down the road when sizing or powder coating?

I just spent several hours using a .30 caliber FreeChex III I bought years ago, but it is at my buddy's house. He bought all of the flashing and worked out the nuances. I also picked up a Harbor Freight 4 ton arbor press to drive it with. My friend used to work at an Ace Hardware so....

As soon as things get a little balky we give it a quick wipe and a spritz of Hornady One Shot and we're good for another 100.
