Took wife and kids to a visitation service for the mother of one of my better high school friends. She died in the hospital of some sort of weird infection they haven't identified yet and likely won't. Really good people, considerably higher up the socioeconomic ladder than me but were always good to this country boy. After a good visit and some lunch I started back in on the shaper with more sanding, priming, painting, and removing old paint. Down to the last few bits.....

Went out and tried out a "new" bass boat with my son. He had been looking for a larger fishing boat for awhile, but like everything else they are in short supply. Found one this week, had to drive nearly to St. Louis to get it. 1997 Model Hawk 18 ft. Yeah, it's old, but in good shape. Supposedly the guy who started Hawk was head designer for Champion at one time and a couple others. Worst thing about it other than age, it's got a 2 stroke. 175hp. Yep, think it will overcome the river current. Runs great

My stepsister has been unresponsive for the last 18 hours. The Doctors have no idea why.
Hoping she pulls through. She lives in Omaha. I can’t even imagine what my Mom and stepdad are going through right now.

I really didn’t want to beat Walter to Omaha, not under circumstances like this.

Yes Gentlemen, my sense of humor does tend towards the dark side.

Recovering from 3 dog nite, 11AM to 3PM fireworks/lightning show made them unhappy. Kid's in Hawaii, Bro is going to Carib and I get to drive to Nashville. Hey, don't need a covid test though.
Noticed my old ship got rebuilt.
Josh, hope she gets better.
It will probably get canned as those things didn't work as designed.

Played 18 holes with the boy and his buddies this AM. Loaded 10 rounds of .308 just to put on paper and verify before I load a box.

The wife is in the final process for making another quilt. So we use the kitchen table to adjust the 3 layers of the quilt to fit together with the least waist.

Lubed some 311284s with the new-to-me BAC. Glenn thought it was softer than my concoction of Jake's I've always used, and he was right.

Loaded some .357s.

Cleaned the .357 Blackhawk.

Grilled Big Mikes.

Getting set up to try planer board trolling. Decided to check Craig's List before shelling out the money for new. Found a young man 2 1/2 hours away with 4 boards bought new last year. Now getting married and sold his boat.:( He had fully accessorized these boards, with tattle tail flags, and top of the line clips. If I had bought new and done the same I'd have had 75 bucks a piece in them. He took 100 bucks for all four.

Just a few miles away from him is a neat cafe that does a splendid brunch and Sue and I dined out doors in perfect weather. Ate good food and people watched. A part I especially enjoy is when my wife critiques motorcycle rider/drivers as they paddle foot and struggle to stop, start, and God forbid park. I must admit, if I were their passenger I'd be terrified at the average rider's level of incompetence. With the nice weather and it being noon on a Saturday there were lots of bikes out. Not a single rider we saw looked comfortable or in full control of their machine and passenger.

After flogging down the interstate a while to get back closer to home, I asked if Sue wanted to go for a MC ride when we got home. I almost got all the words out of my mouth before she said yes. So we set out a pizza to thaw, (Sunday Supper Ritual), and went out and put on 75 miles. One turtle rescue, two hard brake applications for big old does too close to the road, a half a dozen, "Hold your breath there's a rotting fly blown road kill", moments, and lots of pleasant fresh cut hay and almost Summer scents were enjoyed. We speculated that maybe I am just too lazy to put my feet down when coming to a stop for a stop sign or when making a locked handle bar U-Turn to get the turtle out of the road. There was cross traffic a couple of times and I demonstrated that I can put my foot or feet down, if I have to, I guess.

Got home and went to mess with the boat while the pizza was baking and found out I had locked myself out of the shed when we left in the morning. An inelegant entry via a window resulted in access and I found the shed key in the boat where I had set it down yesterday. That little escapade will finally force my hand to get another spare key and stash it some place outside.

Got another coon in the "live" trap this morning and I will relocate it later, down wind a half mile away from the house.

I use planer boards all the time, fishing for Stripers One on each side of the fishing pontoon. Then two rods over the back, without. I use Churches Tackle TX-22 Specials. No mast required. Clipped directly to the line with the release tensioned so it doesn't release. Just reel it in till, it's at the boat, and release it by hand. Otherwise, they will end up down at the fish and I don't want to fight the board too.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Got the goats and sheep out into the pasture. The goats are NOT happy. Well, tough luck guys. I know what your worm load is and why you have it. So buck up and find the shady spot under the trees! You are LIVESTOCK and you are NOT in CHARGE! We also corralled the not so great as a guard dog, but lovable, Pyr in with the crew. Maybe the idea will start to sink in, and she won't be chasing those "threatening" Amish buggies down the road. That's her chief hate in life, buggies. No clue why.

Oh boy, something like 7 days of actual school left and until her 18th birthday ("I'm packing up and LEAVING!!!!!") and the female hormones are pegged out for the youngest pain in the..., I mean girl kid. Lord, give me patience...

The young man I bought the boards from was fishing Salmon out of Milwaukee. He had two Church Walleye boards and two Off Shore OR-12's. This is going to be all new territory for me. I e-bayed a pair of Kastking Rekon 10 reels, a filler spool of Berkeley Big Game 12# mono, and I still have a couple of 40 year old St. Croix glass light Salmon trolling rods. I am fitting another pair of rod holders to the Lund.

The impetus for all this frenzy is my good buddy Jimmy just bought a boat. Since his retirement, he now lives fairly close to two large Wisconsin River impoundments, Petenwell and Castle Rock Flowages. It is common for sport anglers and guides to planer board troll on these bodies of water for Walleye, Crappie, and Whitebass. Since Jimmy has never owned a boat before and is now retired, I am going to try to teach him boating and fishing from a boat. Since both of our boats are 16 ft. Lunds, laid out very similarly, and our gunnels have matching Lund Sport Trak rails, I will be able to take my gear over to his house, spend the night, rig his boat, and fish the next day. We are planning on fishing together once a week if possible. One week here going to the Mississippi or Wisconsin Rivers, and the next week over by his place on Castle Rock or Petenwell.

Our wives are also best friends and they have shared interests. Sadly my wife likes to fish and Jimmy's wife cares not in the least, but....she loves to eat what we catch.

Winelover, have you ever considered setting the front clip to release when a fish is on, but with the rear clip pinned. so the board simple flops over and trails to the rod tip with less resistance until it can be unclipped? Do you run braid or mono?

I run Maxima mono 20# test on my two Alabama/Umbrella (5) rigged, over the back rods. One is a Dawia line counter conventional trolling reel, the other a Penn Battle II open face. I can get about 200 yards on each. The planer board rods, have 14# Suffix mono. One a Penn Battle II the other is an older metal framed Quantum. Both will hold about 200 yards. Big fish require a lot of line. Especially, with lighter tackle. I don't care for the composite reel bodies, they make, nowadays. Too much flex when fighting big fish.

The boards I'm using only have one adjustable clip, the front one. The rear is just a pin to contain the line, as well as the board, if the release is used as a release. Boards will go down to the fish if you don't have some kind of stop on your line. PITA reeling in and if you manage to get it and the fish in the net. Never had them just flop over and float. But I don't stop the boat to reel in, either.
