Bought and changed the MB toilet, changed oil in the Tahoe, played with the kids all afternoon, then cleaned six AR-15s. Going to pack for a trip to Houston for some "verification" tests so FCA will continue to let me troubleshoot and repair their junk.

We have had a 15 foot round 4 foot deep pool for year's, with a nice fence on 2 side's & 24 foot of privacy fence on both end's.
I had dug a 2+ foot deep hole & barried the pool , it was very nice! but it has not been used more than 2 time's a year the last 2 year's .

Today it is my new garden, pool gone, hole backfilled & ready to till & mulch, so I can make good dirt,< that part will take a couple year's or so .
So next year I become a gardener !!----ok it's only 24 ft. by 24 ft. but it'll be sumpthin to do .

key hole garden,,,, woo hoo.
I was out a little today,, it turned cold, windy, and rained most of the day.
I did a little more figuring on the new and final phase of the garden, I figure about 3 maybe 4 more years and I should have all the boxes in, the cement and fencing done, as well as all the tree's in, and gravel work done.
then all I gotta do is finalize how I'm gonna cover everything, and what I'm not gonna cover so I can rotate things.

Cleaned and refilled hummingbird feeders. We have 40 or so resident humming birds and they're going through nearly 1 gallon of sugar-water every week. Also refilled the wild bird feeder which is good sized, but the Cardinals, Chickadees, etc. empty that every week too.

Still trying to heal from torn stomach muscles.

I need to fill the hummingbird feeder.
The concord grapes are ripe so i started picking them and will start juicing them today.
These steam juicers are the ticket.

Have two hummingbird feeders out. Technically, one is an oriole feeder. Only, have four resident hummers. Clean feeders and change the sugar water (4-1 ratio) every other day. Especially, in this heat................to curb bacteria formation. In another month or so, the migrators will be coming though. Increase the sugar water ratio to 3-1, for their trip to South America.

More trail work ahead. The past three days Sue and I have been cutting roots and saplings that stick up in the raw roads, and throwing rocks aside. We have about .4 miles done so far. Very tiring work. Yesterday we got a 1/4 mile done in two one hour increments with some tractor grading in between to "rest". When we came in for lunch we remarked it seemed kind of warm. It was 88! We were sweat soaked and pretty tired so we cleaned up, washed and prepped the Olds and went for a ride.

Equipment operator will be back today and tomorrow as he hopes to finish up on Tuesday. Track hoe followed by dozer. Should be a little over 10K feet of new roads when done. Added to the existing trails/roads we should have well over 2 miles. These roads will provide proper access for future logging, maple syrup making, hunting and general recreation in our woods.

You all know how busy Fall gets with shutting down the gardens, vehicle and boat Winterization, good Fall fishing, some hunting thrown in and the year winding down. Now this road project and we want it ready to seed in a few days. Oh to be younger, stronger, faster, and have more endurance.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Got some good news last night- The Neighbors From Hell are leaving!!! Someone is supposed to be over today to get the Yaks. Gordy is in the mix somehow and believes he may be able to pick up some farm stuff for low $$$. Hope so. I'm not getting too involved in this other advising him on what's junk and what isn't. At least the livestock won't be slowly turning into deadstock through neglect.

Need to start researching fishing rods and reels for fishing our Norfork Lake. All, and I mean all of our fishing gear was stolen out of our 5th wheel about 6 years ago, so, starting over.
We'll eventually buy a boat, but until Mrs. smokeywolf's heart issues are ironed out, on a boat, out in the lake is not a good place for her. For the time being we'll do a little fishing from shore. Our lake access is 5 minutes down the road and we often see folks fishing from shore there.

The rod and reel Mrs. smokeywolf had and that she fished stripers with before, was a light weight salt water rod and a Shimano (I think) Baitrunner type spinning reel that I bought her nearly 25 years ago. I watched her reel in an 18+ lb striper with that from the bank at Silverwood lake up in the San Bernardino Mountains. Have a picture somewhere.

I've done comparatively little fishing over the last half century and bought very little fishing tackle. Hoping to get some input from those of you with more experience.

Winelover, HELP!
For general fresh water pan fishing and game fishing I like Pfluger reels and St. Croix rods. We used 6 lb. test monofilament for pan fishing and 20 lb. test braid with a flourorocarbon leader for walleyes, bass, northern pike and cat fishing. I like rods between 6'6" and 7'6". Medium power with fast tip. For Muskies I always built my own rods mostly with S. Croix blanks. My reels are obsolescent Ambassdeur 6000 and 6500's. I love them, they are rebuildable, made with real metal parts, easy to keep running for decades. I'd have used them for trolling but line counter reels are more efficient.

I started trolling with planer boards this Summer and use 2 Kast King line counter Recon Reels size 15, 2 Daiwa size 17 line counters, and a Okuma Magda I picked up used. I think any 7' to 8'6" trolling rod will do, and I went with medium power rods designed for 8 lb.to 17 lb. test line. I use either two piece or telescoping trolling rods if they are longer than 7' so they fit in my rod locker in my Lund boat. On the trolling reels I run monofilament with .014" diameter line so the Precision Trolling Data app will be correct. Berkeley Trilene XT in 10 lb. test is a standard among trollers in fresh water. Berkeley Big Game in 12# test is the same diameter and is $6.99 for an 1175 yard bulk spool, can't beat it.

Cerosafe, relatively easy and accurate for the short term.
Appropriate sized egg sinker or SOFT cast buck shot pushed thru the bore tells a tale.

I purchase Suffix mono in 3,000 yard spools,10 and 14# test. For my two HD trolling reels, it's 20# test Maxima (brown), in 600 yard spools. These are the two rods that pull the Alabama/Umbrella 5 arm rigs. The Reef Runner lures, that are on the side planner boards, have the 14# test Suffix. Ten pound test is for the casting reels. I don't do braided. Why, if you have to use a mono leader? Unnecessary expense, IMO. Lines are replaced at the end of every season. Cheap insurance. I don't store my expensive rods/reels, on the pontoon, at the Marina. They've been known to be subject of theft by our local druggies.

Since this picture was taken, the five snaps were replaced with heavier ones.................something quite large straightened the bottom one.

Need to get myself another rig like that.
Had a 3 lead, very similar. That is all we were legal to use in Ohio at the time, 3 hooks per line. Very productive rig for the river, especially running 3 shiners.
Lost it to a double catch and not taking the time to check and change line on the first day out.

You dont need to use hooks on ALL of them!!
We have same limitations here. Rear most is where 98% of the hookups are anyhow. The rest are attractors.

I generally wont fish them. I do use them to locate fish then switch to a lure of choice. This is my way to find the striper schools.

That five arm rig is made by Yum. Yumbrella 7" super wire arms. I rig them with 4.5" Shadilicious swim baits...............need to purchase weighted (1/4 or 3/8 ounce) jig heads with #5 hooks. The Grey Ghost and the Pearl Chartreuse, are my biggest producers.

DSCN1671.JPG

I end up with some three wire and four wire rigs, after the super wires work harden from extended use. Stripers will beat the hell out of your equipment. I use Super Glue Gel to repair the swimbaits they tear.

These are the 800 series (deep divers) I run off the planer boards. They are made in Marblehead, OH. OAL, is 6 and 1/12"not counting the hooks. Which I switch with after market saltwater VMC (O'Shaughnessy) #2 size hooks...........which are 4X as strong. They come standard with #4 Eagle Claw trebles that bend, too frequently.

Gold Clown and Hot Pink Panties, are some of my favorites.

I think I've settled on a St. Croix Triumph Med-Hvy/Fast 7' rod and because Mrs. smokeywolf absolutely adored her off-brand (might have been an Okuma) baitfeeder reel that was stolen, I'm replacing with a Shimano BTR6000D.
Not sure if I'm going overboard with a "Med-Hvy". Should I opt for the "Medium"?

Did I tell the chain saw story?

Last week, I needed to start my small 024 Stihl. Almost no compression, barely fired...but since it did fire, I knew it had spark.
After playing with it for an hour...trying all my tricks, Seafoam in gas, starting fluid in carb, starting fluid in cylinder...BTW the spark plug was extremely carboned up, I don't think anymore corbon could get in there. I "think" I have only swapped plugs one time in 20 years with this saw? This saw doesn't get the majority of use. I did try a new plug that day, no luck.

I get my "backup" 024 out (that I bought out of a junk pile and got it running 2 decades ago), I know it hadn't been started for 15 years, put fresh gas/mix and it fired right up and got my small logs cut. As I used it, I remembered it leaked gas and bar oil. Hairline crack in gas tank, rough finish on bar oil fill hole. That's why it's a backup and never gets used. I do recall setting it up with a safety chain, in case I ever had a friend want to borrow a saw. also that day, I made a couple slab cuts (rip) in the sugar maple log with crotch, dang that safety chain works well for that, I will bank that knowledge for future use.

Back to the 024 with little compression. I'm thinking it's junk. I tell the story above to all my friends. They all mentioned gas...we all know what gas to use, I said, LOL. My friend with the most experience with saws and engines asked about my use of the saw previous to last week. I told him I was slabbing a bunch of logs for turning on the lathe. He asked how long does it take to make the cut? I said about 4 or 5 minutes. He asked if I give the saw a break? I said, of course not. So he says, it's probably shot, you ran it too hard, too long, probably got too hot. BUT, he said, maybe, since the plug was so full of crud/carbon, maybe the ring was full of crud/carbon also, then the hot running cooked that crud and "stuck" the ring.

So, I take his advice of pouring some seafoam into the cylinder and let it sit overnight. Well dang, the next morning, the saw had good compression, I guess the ring became unstuck? I didn't try to start it, I just pulled the cord to check, as I didn't have time give it a good cleanup.

Sunday morning (3 days later), I remove the muffler, clean the muffler screen and inspect the cylinder/ring via the exhaust port as another buddy suggested. Dang, the piston and ring looked fine, no scratches and no carbon along the ring, or anything. After the cleanup, I put some fresh gas in, and it fired right up, ran as good as ever, maybe even better.

Mowed grass after riging the mower. Idiot cable jammed. Fellow I bought it off of had the wrong cable on it. Took it off and used a wood clamp to keep it running till I finished up.
Got a new spark plug and a proper length.cable.
Took neighbor down to the county seat to get a car in his name.
He took the old lady and I out to eat to pay his way.. Que Pasa Mexican restaurant.
Time for a nap. Fix the mower under the porch light later on .
