Bean counters and radio techs in .gov postings are quite twitchy about anything comms-related. It seems to be a universal trait.

In 28 years, I never had to strike anyone with my batons--straight stick or expandable PR-24. There were a few times (in bar fight scenarios) that I got attackers off of me with shoves from the straight stick, and the recipients opted out after one application per customer. We got the expandable PR-24s about midway through my career, and baton use-of-force memos dwindled almost immediately. When you snapped those extensions into place, their detents locking sounded a whole lot like an 870 being racked. VERY disincentivizing to the average ne'er-do-well or recalcitrant client.
Collapsible pr24s? Now that's a new one on me. Sounds convenient. The monadnock was a useful tool!

my Sears is clearly a Marlin [60-61?] minus the squirrel.
it's shot a jeezus pile of squirrels both tree and ground type though.

made a drive down to Ogden with Littlegirl and family to see the Christmas lights around their city hall.
took a shortcut through the alley by the jail entrance to cut out about a quarter of the little hut's that they had all around the block.
still took about an hour and a half to see all the lights and stuff.

they seem to be making a heck of an effort to clean up the city, and try to get some life going again in the old downtown, even the train station [old original UP building] was spiffed up and devoid of the usual homeless camps i remember down there when i was taking up track in the switching yard years back as a summer job.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Spent 5 hours on my tiny old skid steer moving crusher run stone. Had 2 large loads dumped in front of the barn and put the rest off to Wednesday as the stone was so wet it would have frozen solid before I could push it around. I got things rough graded, and I mean ROUGH! I fear I'm going to be moving a lot of it again this spring as the slope in front of the barn looks all wrong to me. Darn ledge rock make drainage a pain sometimes. But at least I can get where I need to go now without 4wd and chains! Price per load was half again what I'd thought it might be. Nice kid doing the hauling though and he is hungry for work. Good to see!

Supposed to go look at a set of wheels for SWMBO Explorer studded snows today. Gonna be busy since I also have to get hay out, bring in firewood and take care of a dozen other things.

Remember I was gripin' about the Jenny-O turkey's lack of giblets? And how I e-mailed Hormel/Jenny-O. Well bright and early yesterday morning I got a response for their "Consumer Engagement Special" apologizing for the problem, offering to pass on my concerns to the appropriate people, and to send me some coupons. I could not ask for more from any business much less one as huge as Hormel/Jenny-O.

One last deer season related project was the brining and smoking of the deer hearts I was gifted. I brined them for 5 days in a cure that is designed for pastrami or perhaps corned beef. Salt, Prague powder #1, brown sugar, pickling spices, garlic and water. Yesterday the 4 hearts spent 2 hours on the pellet grill at 250 then 40 minutes in the pressure cooker. I had a nibble after the smoker but before the pressure cooker and I declare it excellent. I think I have a corned deer heart Rueben in my future.IMG_4272.jpg

I spent some money yesterday (cyber monday).

I've been thinking of a battery powered grinder for some time, I think it was L Ross that mentioned a black friday deal on a $79 Milwaukee.
I was himmin' and hawwin' all day...I won't get into ALL the details, as it'd be 20 paragraphs. I looked at Milwaukee's stuff, as well as other brands...and I was looking at a "off brand" (Einhell) pretty hard, great pricing on one with a Brushless motor. But, since I already have Milwaukee M18 Fuel Lith-Ion batteries and charger, that was really the only smart direction.

I just decided to buy once and cry once, going with the Milwaukee. I bought a 4.5" grinder, and "compact" 1/2" Impact wrench. During my research, I learned Milwaukee has at least 4 different models of the 4.5" grinder...and I just couldn't get on board going with the lesser models (brush motor), and opted for the Near $200 brushless unit (2780-20).

During my research, I learned Milwaukee (and other brands) have really "upped the game" on their impact wrenches, quite high torque ratings on them. I have always used air impact wrenches, but have wondered about the battery powered units. Milwaukee came out with this 1/2" "Mid-Torque" in a compact size, in the last year or so. It is rated with 650 FT-LBs, which is higher than the cheap 1/2" Air impacts I have. Since I was spending money, I decided to pull the trigger for the 2962-20 at the near $200 price.
Merry Christmas to me.

Cooey model 600. Savage/Stevens/Rem. Marlin pretty much reduced parts count/cost reduction for mod 60. And did a fantastic job.

Get tree up, all the trimming boxes out of the attic- wore me out. Did get under the bench cleaned and re-organized - she knocked the telephone behind the bench - might as well clean while I'm there. Did find 3 buckets of lead.

Getting truck ready for Texas trip. Changed to Winter tires, aired them all equally, attempted to lower spare and discovered the fancy anti theft lock in the bumper was so corroded I had to destroy it to get it out. Once that was done the spare cranked down nicely and I aired it up to spec. Truck washed, windows thoroughly cleaned. Vacuum the cab and the box tomorrow. Working on my lists and even found my North Dakota list from 2019 in the truck.

Loaded up another box of steel shot loads. I need to wax the crimps on all of the reloads. Was told today we can expect mosquitoes! Aarrgghh, I'm over mosquitoes here. Had the two young guys stop over so we could firm up our launch time, 20 hours and 30 minutes according to Map Quest so we are figuring on giving ourselves 24 hours before check in time. If we are early we can grocery shop in Rockport.

You know those days when you don't even dare to think "what else c---- p______ g- w____" just because you're very likely to get a demonstration ?

This has been a bad quarter for my friends .
A childhood friend of my kids lost her husband and daughter in a car accident that had to be nothing short of fate .
My best friend lost his wife last month .
Today a friend I've not met in person , but exchanged goods and jibes with almost daily for the last 10 years ,lost his daughter in a car accident and his grand daughter who was ejected is in an ICU . I guess as far as the accident goes ejection was probably a good thing since the other car was a train .

If y'all would put in a good word for Amber , Tony , Greg , and Kadie that'd great .

Things like that can weigh heavily on any person with a sense of compassion. Condolences to you, their family, and other friends. Prayers for the survivors and peace for those who have been lost.

Allow me to edit. Prayers for the train crew also. I've met some and these fatals tear them up.
