Today started to a trip to Platteville for an estate sale. Lots of grimy old junk with a few treasures thrown in. We bought 70 pint canning jars, a nice cross pein hammer, two metal ammo cans, and a Marble Woodcraft hunting knife all for 32 bucks. Headed the 47 miles home with jars clinking and clanking all the way. The breakdown was 20 bucks for the jars, a dollar for the hammer, 8 bucks for the two ammo cans, and 3 bucks for the Marble's knife.

Then we headed to a local gun show. Besides my $5 entry fee I spent $15. For which I got 101 sticks of .30-30 brass, 55 R-P, 40 W-W, and 5 Hornady. The R-P brass is destined to become .357 Herretts. Then a fellow had a cigar box with lead in it for which he was asking $5, it had close to 5 lbs. of lead. But lo, this was not quotidian lead as the price would indicate, oh no. 3 lbs. of the "lead" were 45/55 bar solder in bar form, bent and cut to fit in the nice old cigar box. 45% of 3lbs. is 1.35 lbs. of TIN! I offered $3 and the seller gratefully accepted. Demonstrating the perils of selling something when you don't know what you have. I told Sue, (who had been waiting in the car reading), that I bought lead. The double take bespoke volumes as she is painfully aware that I weigh my lead stash in the thousands. Before she could question my sanity I showed her the bars. She said,"What is that, solder?" Gotta love that woman.

Came home and it was almost 70°. The Indian has a belly full of 5 1/2 quarts of fresh 15W-40 and a new air filter, and off we went. 103 miles later we wheeled into the shed. Gorgeous Fall day. Saw no deer but were damn near hit in the heads by a Red Tailed Hawk that dove out of a tree on a little back road. Don't know what it was thinking. Trees starting to turn and of course Sue and I were commenting on the sugar maples.

Canned smoked Yak brisket, boiled red potatoes in the jackets, and sauteed zucchini with onions. A local dark red semi sweet wine, followed by bourbon and M&Ms.

Glaciers have you considered a cheater coil on top of the wood stove run through a radiator in the far back and back through a a pressure tank or water heater as an expansion tank ? The water only had to be 90-100° and shouldn't run over 20psi or so . With good step downs or back flow valves a clock motor pump on a thermostat or 15 on 30 off timer should move enough hot fluid from the heating coils to the radiator to warm the farthest room and hold it 60° or so without having to keep the close room 80+ to get it warm .

I did a deal once with a single duct . We used a duct booster fan to pull the floor air out of the back bedroom up the wall and back to the wood stove cool air out on the stove or the other way and hot air off the ceiling down the wall and across the floor . Their like a 1/32 hp motor that moves like 1-200 cfm . It doesn't take much if you have any natural flow at all .

Got my first check in a while,Yesterday.
Went out today, on a stock back up the reserves, type adventure. Just burned thru 400 bucks in one day.
Well I did get a dinner at Bob Evans for the wife and I. I like that place, we can order anything we want, and still stay under 25 bucks for two.
Did not buy myself any toys. Just concentrated on building the food and personals reserve back up to a month. Then replenishing the pantry.
Well, did get a good, old school, battery charger. When I stopped in at the local pawn. For a looky lou. But that is a tool, not a toy.
Got done putting everything away just a bit ago. Man I am tired, and broke. Looking around, I can see nothing to show for it.
Cept maybe a happy wife.who now has herself a 6 month supply of her favorite bath items, and a months supply of Cokes with Coffee.

Put new shelving liner on 30' of shelves, put the first coat of re-paint on the pony wall's cap, loaded a 20-round box of .45-70 and a box of .357 Mag, went through one of the garage storage cabinets and dumped some junk, set some stuff aside for a Goodwill run, and re-arranged some other stuff. Put off tomorrow's four-day get-away till the fifteenth.

My wife went grocery shopping, then stopped at Home Depot for a handful of color chips. She's decided our bedroom is my next painting project.

My 'bench' is loaded with painting stuff! Only got about a hundred feet left to do. Told the landscape guy he needs to fix the broken sprinkler. Been digging for 2 days, haven't found it yet and knees are really sore. Her sis says they survived Ian OK, just lots of wind and rain. Her hubby's learning to get in and out of the car now. They got the yard fenced so she doesn't have to walk the dog down the street.
HA! Thanks for letting me know there is more than one guy whose reloading bench gets buried under the rest of his life!

There's a lot to be said for older style "dumb" chargers! They'll charge a really dead battery where a "smart" charger won't.

Glad you had a good day! You two deserve it after the past couple months!

Pretty cool and windy here, but a nice blue sky. I'll take it! Need to install the new dishwasher today and maybe move fence. The girls left for Watertown already, seems a place called "Ollies" has the best prices for blinds??? Whatever. I'd better remember to get something planned for supper in case they don't make a day of it.

My Rock Auto order got here in 2 days, can't complain at all about that. Got the fuel pressure regulator for the F350 and splurged for a new fuel tank selector switch since I just don't trust the one I have. Also got the MAF sensor for the GMC. I hate just throwing parts at things but I don't have anyone who can do the super in depth diagnosis I need, not that I can afford or am aware of at least. I think I owe the mechanical world an apology though! I've been saying for some time that I want a good mechanic, not an "automotive technician". I still don't see a thing wrong with the term "mechanic", but I'm beginning to appreciate why the term "technician" might well apply to those who can look at a live stream data scan thing or trace out a wiring schematic and between the 2 diagnose electronic issues that are causing all sorts of problems. Problem is there are darn few "technicians" out there that are anything but parts changers. I honestly don't know how anyone can keep up on some of this stuff. You have to be a greasy fingered geek I guess, and there aren't a lot of those around!

SWMBO and I got talking about entertainment back in the day yesterday on the way home. I've had the theme song from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" running through my head nonstop for about 18 hours now... :headbang:

As I was getting dressed this morning, Whiskey, (the rescue cat), jumped up on the bed seeming to need an unusual amount of attention. After some serious petting he raced ahead of me on my way to the kitchen. As it is Sunday morning, I was intent on baking some fresh currant scones when Whiskey leapt up on a bar stool strategically placed for the cats to look out the back kitchen window. He was on high alert and I recalled I had a dog proof trap set out by the well head. Sue had put her foot down due to a raccoon pooping on the back door step. Sure enough there was a large healthy trash panda securely tethered to the dog proof and quite unhappy about it. Whiskey stayed in the window until the Nylon 66 appeared and the thrashing stopped. Then he lost interest in the still lump, and wandered off.

Now if I could only get rid of the damned moles in the yard. The yard looks like it has varicose veins.

Yes I’ve done domestic water heating that way long before we got electricity. The heat source at the time was Warm Morning oil drip stoves with a wood fired water heater in the same room. Heating water with a coil worked pretty well as the wood fired water heater had a very small fire box and needed a lot of attention. The wood stove is in the living room which is about 40 feet from the boiler hot water heater. The second problem is these are log walls, and have to run pipe that can’t be hidden is not going to happen. Running base board is a constant around the rooms of the house and I used every trick in the book to make it functional and still look good.
It’s just not worth it. When we need hot water, turn the boiler on which gives us 50 gallons for the day. When it’s shower time turn on the boiler and let it run while your in the shower when your out and dressed, the boiler has the water heater up to temperature. The boiler will heat the 50 gallon tank to what the limit setting is in about 15 minutes. That’s about 2/10’s of a gallon of oil or about $0.73. In deep winter the boiler 24/7 and water heating comes on 4 or 5 times a day, and the boiler will come on to heat the extremities of the house which will get cold when outside temperatures drop below -20*. It only comes on rarely when we are use the wood stove and with the new pellet stove I’m hoping to lessen the oil consumption even more.
Our big problem is when we leave for long periods of time in mid winter, oil heat is on 24/7. With the pellet stove a house sitter can lessen the impact on the heating oil tank. I won’t trust a house sitter with the wood stove.

I have had the Side by Sides out for a few days here. I found that two of my three light circuits failed. Its the switches a d the dust from the tails that have dine them in.

Proper switches are kinda large and I tried to utilize marine waterproof switches. Still suprised they are water corrosion safe yet pumice dust kills them in a couple Seasons.

Ooh well. But to use these switches I need panels. So I started looking and costs are (have gone) crazy!!!! Well I found some that was properly priced and altho they where said not to fit they appeared proper. But they was also 1/4 the price for the SAME THING!!
They arrived and appear to be correct once I bend them to be contoured.

Easy bending with a couple pieced of angle iron and my 6" Winton vice.

They bent easy and I got lucky with excellent fit.

Thats it for me for a while it started raining and I have allot to tear i to to gain access.

Back is a Buggin'. Think it's time for a Flexeral. Never had this before I went thru the surgery. I think they may have crossed some wires. LOL
Must have overdone it a bit yesterday. Stayed up late fixing a few things and reorganizing the pantry.
Going to try and mow the grass. Maybe. Guess we will see after I get a shower and this pill has a moment to kick in.
Or I may just finally get down to loading my test loads.

Kids stopped by to take the dogs swimming up on the St Lawrence. I think Matt needs to get a bigger vehicle! The S-10 is getting cramped. I notice The Angel didn't offer to put all the wet, muddy dogs in her Grand Cherokee with the leather gut!

First thing I did was get rid of the deceased coon. Then I moved mole traps. I worked on the Marble's Woodcraft knife for awhile.

Next, did one of the chores I hate the most. Spraying the house and sheds with Permethrin mix to reduce the number of Asian Lady Beetles and Box Elder bugs from infesting the house and out buildings. I end up covered with poison and cannot wait to get into the shower and throw my clothes in the washer. So I got that done.

Next we cleaned the chimney, I already had an extension ladder out to spray the walls and window above the porch roof. All I had to do was carry it around to the rear of the house and clamber up on the roof with the brush on a chain. Sue pulls the brush down and out the clean out door after I swing the chain round and round as I lower it down the flue. Then I align the brush and she pulls it out. There was very little buildup in the chimney a benefit from using only seasoned dry firewood I believe.

Then because the day was so nice and sunny we repaired a set of paver stairs that some of the steps had become loose. The warm weather should allow the adhesive to cure nicely.

So now there was a bit of time remaining on the beautiful Fall Sunday and we got the Hotrod out and went for a nice drive. Another sterling day.

A slow and somewhat of a lazy day. Gassed up the Escape and did my usual 0800 Sunday morning retirement side job. Later, we made a Goodwill run, then stopped at Home Depot so my wife could get more paint chips. Grilled a pork loin that was fit for a king. After dinner, I changed the rolling block's Lyman 17A diopter insert from a #24 to a #26 -- ought to be just right, for a 100-yard 12" bull and my vision.

i walked down the street and got the truck and 4 wheeler and brought them home, then i hoofed it back down to get the mustang.
getting in the mustang was sort of a struggle, but getting out was,, well, let's just say i'm glad nobody was watching... LOL

after a good sit down and another struggle standing up again I went and straightened out some of the siding boards where i built the garage door in.
weird how some of those nails got pulled out and then bent, it's like someone was hitting down on them with a shovel or something.
i got them out finally and was able to simply push them back flat again.
this time i put screws in and sunk them a little below flush.
i'm sure a better idiot will come along and un idiot proof them here shortly.
