Ben, stay after it. Keep an eye on what is going on under recoil. It takes lots, and I mean LOTS of time to develop good form to shoot sub MOA groups off the bench with any handgun. When I first started in IHMSA I was gung-ho. Shooting several times a week. I could shoot 10 shots and tell you if it was IHMSA worthy.
Today, I don't shoot even 1/4 as much as I did a few years ago. Tried to shoot some groups off the bags and it was terrible, like 4"@100. This was a proven load in this particular gun. I went ahead and shot the match with this ammo as I had a pile of it loaded. 37x40 and top dog for the month. I figured not to bad for not having shot the gun or a match for over a year.
Keep an eye on where the fore arm rest and where or how you grip the grip. Even if your doing it wrong, do it wrong the exact same way every times.
I made a post when I first came over here on my thoughts on slow powders in large cases. That won't happen again. To eachs own and what works for us, safety and fun is what it is about.
What soured me when I first shot cast in my 30-30 TC was blu dot. I found it to be very very position sensitive.
Shooting in creedmoor one has different tendencies than off the bench. Barrel tipped down, insert cartridge, close, cock, fire. Round would hit low by 2 feet at 150. Really rattled me.
Load, close action, tip barrel up and bump against my knee, cock, fire, center punch!
If I forgot to bump it so powder was back against the primer, it was a miss and not even close. So I just went back to my rifle powders.
FYI I won a state championship with the 30-30 and cast bullets shooting half scale. Half scale is actually 3/8. 40x40+7 and the shoot offs were .22 chickens at 200m. Beat out a couple of 7BR and 223 shooters. There was a fair bit of grumbling that day from the full length gas check shooters lol.
It got to the point it was boring on full sized steel critters. I retired it to the safe and started work with the 35 Remington rimmed. Your post has made me rethink this lol.

Were both parties standing? Or was Richard in creedmore position and the rifle guys standing?
A fair bit of difference, none the less still a heck of a task.

Yes, Creedmoor. San Luis Obispo, CA has a 500 meter shoot every year, rifles against handguns. Rifles follow rifle silhouette rules, handguns follow handgun silhouette rules. Handgun wins it every year. Yes that was a tremendous feat. I couldn't do it, I couldn't see if the targets were set up at 500 meters.
