Well, might as well add my two cents here. Think the old yankee saying "Different strokes for different folks" would apply!

heck I do different in most of my rifles.
it's kind of fun to have a varmint load and an ELK load in the same rifle.
sometimes it's cast sometimes it's jacketed and sometimes it's one and one.

quite often I come up with something cause it's sitting on the bench and find I really like the results.
AA-2230 in the 357 max under 250gr boolits anyone?
how about 2230 in the 25-20,,, yep not in the books either.
or 2230 in the 30-30? works very well there too.
put it [24.5grs] under 150gr boolits/bullets same load for both no poi/poa change either.
throw it in the 308 or 0-6 under a cast boolit or a jacketed one and you get the same results.
same load of 2230 I use in the 5.56 rifles under 55gr store-boughts and home made 60gr bullets.
I don't even change the powder dump's I have set for it I like the load so much. [it corresponds to 19.3 grs of 2400 too which is a favorite in the 44 mag and 45 colt at times]
maybe i'll try the 2230 in them too someday.

or anyone ever try 3.5grs of titegroup in a 41 mag with a gas check mold without the gas check?
it works pretty dang well.
3.5grs of 700-x in a 300 BO under a 230gr plain base and in the 30 carbine with 32 cal 98gr boolits is a winner too.
put some imr 4227 under that 230 and it's sub sonic but strokes a pistol length AR rifle like a champ. [okay that's a rip off of a book load [kinda]
how about 110gr noslers in the 30-06 the same load of AA-4100 I use in the 300 bo works in the 0-6 too it's a click or 2 slower but 2000 fps is enough to reach out there a way's and smack down a rock-chuck, put a cast boolit under it weighing a slight bit more and it works too.

sometimes i'll agonize for days over a load looking here and there to see if it's been tried before or if anything close is out there.
but in the end you have to use some basic rules as guidelines and either do it or not.
that little apprehensive feeling and the first trigger pull is still a little rush of adrenaline every time.

Squealing by on a lawman pension forces me to keep it simple and work with right at half a dozen powders for, well half a dozen calibers. Black Powder is an entity unto itself, and my BP weapons slightly outnumber my centerfires, and I view them separately. Thus when I'm working up a load and find one that is good, I stick with it. I don't have the luxury of having lots of components. The only time I work up a new load is when I get a new mould, or every couple years maybe a new gun. Maybe. ....
But who cares? I'm happy. That's what counts right? ;)

Messing around with buffered loads at full-on jacketed bullet velocities and powder that is 2-3 clicks slower than anything in the book and having to achieve about 102% density can get exciting. Especially the first time on the trigger with practically zero data. Too much buffer and too little powder in a bottleneck round can go badly. Too much powder period and too little buffer can go almost as badly. Once the very first shot is through the chronograph and downrange, suddenly you know where you're at and which way to go from there. But that first shot with something like 55 grains of WW 780 Supreme ball powder in an '06 case, compressed below the shoulder/body junction with a stack non-flowing buffer, generates no small amount of trepidation. I've been known to hide under the shooting bench with both hands cupping the butt pad and pull the trigger with a piece of wire. The more I experiment with different cartridges and generate more data, the easier it becomes to predict a safe starting load.

If it isn't fun and enjoyable , why are we doing all this ? Ben but

True enough but there's one you forgot to add . . .

Fun, enjoyable and challenging.

If it were all that easy everybody would be doing it. :D

True statements fellows.

It is very interesting when we get this many people together that are " like minded " we begin to see the wide diversity within the " like minded " individuals.

We all like firearms, bullet molds, etc. However, at our loading benches and at the range, our goals and the things that will bring a smile to our faces are all slightly different.

My 1 1/4 " 5 shot group I fired 2 days ago with a handgun at 100 yards impressed me, however for others it wasn't too impressive.

Shooting sub 2 mch groups at 100 with a handgun never gets old. I don't think most people realize how well a handgun can shoot. It is up to the shooter to make it happen.
Nicely done Ben.

i'll admit the one thing I do have is a luxury of powder choices and the ability to make most anything I want as far as a boolit or a 22, 38,44,or 30 cal bullet.
i'll never live long enough to use up everything I have on hand for sure but it was part of the plan when I went to working 15 straight 18hr day's.
I didn't get everything I wanted in that time frame, but sure enough got a bunch to muck about with for the next 25 years.
might as well give it all a go.
I know I've said plenty of times "well,,, that didn't work" but it for sure gave me a chance to learn why it didn't work.
sides it Shure ain't no fun if it ain't interesting.

Plinking clays with a handgun at 100 yards is a blast. Many won't think it is possible but that is why they can't, they don't believe.

Most single shot silhouette pistols will out shoot most if not all off the shelf hunting rifles. Richard Mischler has fired 40x40's with a 10 inch BF pistol on the 500 meter rifle course, not a single rifle came close.
Were both parties standing? Or was Richard in creedmore position and the rifle guys standing?
A fair bit of difference, none the less still a heck of a task.

It may sound weird, but I can absolutely hit with a 1911 standing, isosceles, at 100 and 200 yards if the ammo is up to the job. Can't get it to group any better at 15 yards, no kidding. Bench a 1911? Forget it. Have trouble hitting anything at any range with a revolver unless my knuckles are well bagged and the barrel is cradled. I never learned how to control a Smith and Wesson DA, things sit way to high and torque around in my hands. But a 1911 just agrees with me.
