Took My Savage 340 30 WCF out again this morning....now that she is back in action!
Range wasn't pleasant like it was yesterday....Today it was in the 20's with 15 mph gusts which was hitting my right side of my body. (Glad I had my balaclava in the car to keep my face and head warm)
Did not have much faith in the day because my fingers were numb and my hand warmer died but I was determined.
I shot 2 proven loads to compare groups...I had 25 rounds of each. I was shooting my favorite target bullet ....the NOE 165 grain FN Ranch Dog ( Trad. Lube Style )
These were plain based ...Each bullet weighed & all were = / - .1 grain at 166.7 gr These were coated in Smokes Clear PC and sized .3105" ( that is what my Lee push through sizer mic's at) I loaded both 7.4 Grain Unique and 6.2 grain American Select...25 of each These charges were individually weighed to the exact amount. The COL for these was 2.465" for my chamber and it just touches the lands!
I shot a 10 shot group and a 15 shot group on each loading.
The top left was the first 10 shot group ( Unique) The wind gusts from the right needed to be read as this group told me! By the Top right Group of 15, I was doing better with waiting out the wind gusts!
Then I shot the lower targets; these were the American Select loads:
The Bottom Left was 10 shots and the gusts were diminishing... The bottom right was the 15 shot group....and this is probably the best group I ever shot wit this rifle! The total group was 1 inch center to center....Excluding the out out of group shot the other 14 shots tore a 3/4 in center to center hole!
Man I'm just ecstatic ! Maybe a 8 month vacation from rifle shooting and the new heavier trigger pull had something to do with it!
