23 years ago, I wanted to build a LH flintlock. I knew a guy that built these all the time. It was his passion and his therapy. In hindsight, I should have just paid him to build the rifle. But I bought a custom kit from Track of the Wolf. It is a .45 cal with a swamped barrel from Colorado Rifle Barrels.

The barrel has been fit to the stock as has the lock. That's pretty much where I quit and put it away. I dug it out the other day thinking that I'd finish it this winter. After looking at the kit and what remains to be done, coupled with my very limited interest in muzzle loaders in general, I think the best decision is to simply sell the kit.

Track of the Wolf no longer offers this kit. It is the 1770 Isaac Haines Lancaster County Long Rifle. It comes with everything, even a strip of maple for making the patchbox cover if desired. All you need to provide are the tools, sandpaper and elbow grease.

So, I'm testing the waters here for interest. Looking at the current kits being sold by ToW, they are all in the $1000 and up range. I bought the best of everything when I spec'd out this kit. Other than the inlet black on the wood, it looks pretty much like the day I received it.

I think it's worth $750.00. That's about what it cost when I bought it.

If there is any interest, please let me know.

I'm piqued.

What brand lock? Chambers? L&R? R. E. Davis?

Any idea what the twist rate is?

Siler makes sense after you jogged my brain, a Germanic lock style would be correct for the early Lancaster period. I probably won't be back on until tomorrow evening, got a busy day ahead at the shop tomorrow.

First job this morning was to take some pics of the kit and confirm a few details.

The lock is a Davis. I ordered the lock special based upon the recommendation of the riflemaker from whom I purchased the kit. He has since passed. Built some gorgeous rifles over the years. Great guy, too. We became good friends.

Wood was ordered as fancy maple. According to the invoice, it is 3X so assume that means triple fancy. The stock alone was $279 when purchased in 2000.

Barrel is a Colerain .45 Caliber. Stamped Colorado Barrel Co. on the bottom. Dovetails are cut in the top for sights and in the bottom mounting pin tabs.

All the pins, screws and other fasteners are included along with the flash hole liner.

A bad of English flints is included as well.

Here are pics that I took today. There is a dig in the wood above the inlet for the lock. That is there because the wood still needs to be taken down. It will disappear when the stock is finished to size. I see that the limit for posts is 10. So, this will take 3 posts. 20231128_085526.jpg20231128_085551.jpg20231128_085606.jpg20231128_085659.jpg20231128_085706.jpg20231128_085715.jpg20231128_085731.jpg20231128_085849.jpg20231128_085916.jpg20231128_090008.jpg

I'll take it for the asking price. We can work out shipping and so forth later, back to work for me.

Really. Well that was quick. I have the original shipping box. I'll find some bubblewrap and other cushioning materials so it is nicely packed. I am in no rush to ship this. We might want to wait until after the Christmas rush is over. I shipped a Shiloh to a friend a couple weeks before Christmas and it disappeared in the USPS system. I was in the process of filing a claim (not something I would wish on anyone) and suddenly I got an update and a notice that it was at the dealer in KC. It was the year where they showed pictures of USPS warehouses piled to the ceiling with packages.

It's not a firearm so we can ship it with UPS or Fedex. Not sure which if any provide any more security that it will show up.

I'll be anxious to see how it comes out. I simply did not have enough interest to continue on with the project. Oh, and if you remember the post I shared here about shouldering up that flinter that a member at the club just finished and it feeling so good. I put the barrel in the stock the other day and shouldered the rifle. It felt just as good as his. They have an unbelievable balance to them compared to a modern rifle.

Thanks.

Looks like the rifle is sold, gents. I'd change the subject line to say SOLD, but does not look like that's allowed.

I have no idea why the forum software is setup to not allow a poster to edit his own titles, it just is what it is. I edited the title to (SOLD) but did not lock the thread, looks like you & Ian still have shipping details to discuss.

Yes, thank you, Rick.

I had the same idea to ship sometime in mid-January for the same reasons. I'll get you paid and you can sit on it until the mayhem cools off.

Jim Kibler ships a lot of longrifles and has become expert in it. He will ONLY ship through the post office. The problem with any carrier these days is that if it looks like a gun box and is about the right weight, the box accidentally gets pried open and the contents deleted, or accidentally gets one end propped up on on the curb and driven over to snap the contents in half. "oops". Happens all the time, but is apparently less of a problem with USPS than the others. I can make all the shipping arrangements, send you a printed label, and add real third party insurance for a lot less than the counter rates and all you would need to do is pack the rifle and drop it off at the post office.

Anyway, for now I'll start a PM and we can sort out the details.

(The one on the left), an old Belgian double barrel blank, and some 3/32" brass flat bar. It tends to make a mess that requires the state National Guard and an entire division of the Red Cross to restore to order.

Thank you Ian for delivering me from Temptation.:D
I'm chuckling as I type this. I have felt this same emotion when I hesitated to buy something and somebody else bought it while I pondered it. I justify it as telling myself it is saved money that can go towards another toy that tickles my fancy even more.
