The slug looked 2 groove ...... Metford is the one that falls between polygonal and ratchet ? I'll go look it up .....

That looks like my four groove Metford Type 99 barrels.

They have a real square quality to them.

I have to do some scrubbing to confirm . It doesn't really look like peaks and valleys and it looks more like 4 lands I think . It will bump a .278 against the lands . A 280413 I think may have been Cramer B4 .

All I know is my 38 Looked like it had great rifling! ....then I pushed a slug through it and I got a surprise! I did not see any normal rifling on it but after closer inspection the slug had Flats on it!

JW looking at it now it looks like that's what it is . It would also explain why the measurements came out the way they did .

Fiver , I have been leaning towards that . I will have to do a little brush work first . Maybe some 0000 wool . It's beginning to look a 6.8 Japanese instead of a 6.5 . 27-08 ? :)

Cumulative of parts of 4 days .

6.5 Japanese Arisaka , type 38 , manufactured Sept-Oct 1927 , .257×.268 net bore groove , .280 throat , 19.5" barrel , 1-9.5 advertised .

The first loads were all 9.9 gr Unique and CCI 200 LRP
277-130 Lee formed and turned 243 brass this ran 8" and was the last fired .

.260-140 NOE in formed 35 Rem , this was second and ran just over a hand width . Lubed in the bottom 2 grooves as cast loaded out touch with 2 grooves out of the case at .272-150 gr 6.5 Hornady checks . I didn't take an OAL but it fits in the magazine , feeds , and lets me get a loaded round out still loaded .

The first load was a 280473 sized .278 at 122 gr with a 270 GC with the bottom band just in the case . This one was all over about a foot high and 18" wide it also had blow back so bad that one case looked like a golf ball . In formed 35 Rem .

This was an introduction to the rifle , I've never shot an Arisaka and it's been longer since I had a long travel 2 stage trigger . It's probably around 7# at the break .

Today has me loading a few in paper patches in Norma brass sized .266 and wrapped to .274 . It's not ideal but I'm working with tools available for now .

Bullets loaded today are the 280473 and 266469DV @ 140 gr over the same 9.9 Unique I'm contemplating continuing on with the 266469 patched with start loads of I4350 and/or H4831 just to see if I can cut some of the frost off . My cheap phone cable bore scope shows a lot haze and a few goobers at this point . I'll break out the 0000 wool brush .

It cleaned up easy I'm actually kind of surprised , but maybe I've had enough practice that I scared it clean . ;) It was much smoother so maybe what I thought was goobers is just pits troweled in .

I went ahead and loaded some 36 gr H4831 from the repacked in 74' WWII surplus powder just about under the PP 266469 . I have 2 of them now 1 drops .266 and the other came with bullets at .268 . Of course I have no clue what that alloy might be ....

No ammo porn , I got called to work a half shift for an upchucker . So I'll get some in the morning .

Last note the 35 Rem fits the chamber fine but it's a lot short like .08/9" short . It also doesn't eject for beans , it extracts ok . I need to find a 270/6.8 expander ball and reduce it to about .273/4 live measure , or turn down a 7/16 -20 bolt , and end drill it with a set screw for the decapping pin .

As promised ammo porn .

30-06' , 266469DV , dri-patch , 280473 and a 6.8 SPC case .
The 280 pulled down to .265 wiped the grooves .

IMG_20210205_094250257~2.jpg
The Uniques , and 35,35.5,36 gr H4831 , start loads for 160 gr jacketed . sharing space with some 25-06'. Small lot bullet storage usually reserved checked and lubed .

I got to thinking , usually about the time I hurt myself , treating the Metford rifling like Micro groove probably isn't working . Without going to HT Lino (violet ink) I don't think I'll be able to run greased very hard . The Metford won't cut the patches , probably no matter how hard I kick them in the base and how soft the alloy is . I guess that means that once the polish starts to take the patches could be on one or nearly one piece unless they parachute drag/spin confetti .....

I must have gone on a 6.5 binge when I got the 264 WM ..... I found a forgotten 266324 . 140 gr (?) PB with a heavy base huge lube groove heavy top band ......

I been wondering about the metford rifling cutting a patch too.
I know in the 7.7 it seems like the first round is dead on zero and it becomes a meh whatever after that.
as soon as I let things cool down, and start over, I get the same pattern again.
there's never been any confetti, and I have a hunch the second etc bullets are hanging onto the patch for various amounts of time.

The 280473 with Unique shot nice round 4" 50 yd group .
The 266469 with Unique .......what's the approved method of measurement for key holes ? Only 2 hit the backer 16" high ctc was an optimistic 46" , probably more like 47-1/2" .

The dark bore with the 25kpsi going sideways did not inspire any confidence . As such I resigned myself to trigger time and hitting the hill .

The 35.0 gr load offered some confetti and about an 8" triangle a foot high .
35.5 gave me about a 4×6 football shaped group .

36.0 gr went to 2 ft or so .

The barrel looks a lot better . It's got a little shine and actually visible lands and grooves which was the primary goal . It's also given me a point to work from with the 469 , no chronograph information .
Data suggests 2,000-2,200 fps .

The bore is now pronounced clean . I can't find the mirror attachment bag of goodies for the phone driven endoscope so this is what ya get .
The worst of the pitting

Most of the shiny stuff , I looks pretty good compared to what I start with .
210226_120929.jpg
The neck , throat , leade zone ......it actually is about 1-1/4" long . The leade end of the lands are pretty sad . I don't think I can get this one up to the needed/desired 2100 fps MV with anything resembling a game bullet .
210226_121145.jpg

The work will continue of course .
I don't know if I mentioned it . H4831 is a fill it up to the neck pick a bullet go shoot it for 22-2400 fps , 1 gr less for the 160s in jacketed .

Bruce Frechette , Ammohead has me hooked up with a pair of sizers roughly .2725 , alloy specs etc , a push through Lee and H&I pair . I hope they are as good as Buckshots , he is using at least some of his tooling .
