Waht did you cast today?

How 'bout we start a thread like that? Of course Bret won't be able to play.

I just came if from casting up some Mav Dutchman's designed Big Lube bullets marketed through Dick Dastardly. All that cowboy action hoopla for a bullet designed to hold enough black powder lube to keep the fouling as sloppy as a dorm room kiss. They work, and work well. Of course they have not been tested for accuracy against a bullet with lesser lube capacity but perhaps greater structural integrity, but by golly my Cimarron SAA clone keeps running, and my 73 Winchester does not foul out either. You cannot conveniently use a blow tube on the lever gun and wiping isn't an option. I used to watch 10 shots form a decent group and then watch #11 go wider, #12 wider still, and #13 leave the house thank you. Now I can keep shooting and have reasonable accuracy for as long and necessary.

I usually ladle pour my black powder bullets but this is a Lee based 6 cavity and I filled an RCBS pot with some pretty soft lead. In this case it is stained glass window cames from windows made in Innsbruck, Austria in 1893 and installed in a big Catholic Church in Green Bay, WI. When the windows were being professionally restored I offered to dispose of the resultant hazardous waste generated, and I was eagerly taken up on that offer by the restoration company. I did not even charge them for said disposal. With the tin joints the brinell hardness comes out to 8. I have a few hundred pounds of that lead.

Now I gotta decide if I am going to pan lube these or if I'll fill a Star with NASA lube. or maybe I already have one filled I'll havta check.

Made a run last night when I got home from work. Ran a NOE 311-179 FN I bought a few weeks back, used the standard HP pins. I’m not a fan of it, took forever to go to dropping good boolits, and the pins are not adjusted right even though they looked like they were. Finally got it to run pretty good, but the HP having the slight depression in it. I’ll adjust and give it another shot.

Ran a 4 cavity Lyman 358-063 with a set of regular handles, not the nutcracker style and it was great ran good and made some nice projectile. Finished up with a 2 cavity 358-093 that I picked up a while back cheap with a set of handles IIRC. It ran really nice. May end up selling that one as I have a 4 cavity as well.

Also moved my casting set up into my old shed a couple weeks ago, worked wonderfully last night in the 30 degree temps. No wind either.

Cast more jigs yesterday. Why? Because I'm nuts that's why. Actually my brother texted and asked if I had a 1/32 oz. jig mould for blue gills and if I could make him a few would I please paint them black. So I did, but...... while the pot was hot and everything was out, I couldn't help myself.

Did a test run on a new Accurate 43-215H. I'm pleased with the results. I specified it for .431 +.002 in 20 to one, they came in at .432 and 215.5 grains. I got this for my recently purchased Ruger Marlin 1894 after measuring the throat and fired brass. Have to wait to get the rifle back from Ruger to see how they work.

Well today I cast 132 each HG275 BB in an 8 cavity mold I got from JonB. I’m happy with the mold bullets just fall out.
Sized to .3575 with 30 to 1 and powder coated with clear. I’ll wait a couple days then resize again.

Left to right, HG weight 132, Lee weigh 128, NOE HP weight 135, Lee 124, and Lee 105 that weights 111.
I’ve got one thousand Starline 38 spl cases primed and ready. Plan was bullseye at about 3.5 to 3.8. Another batch with unique maybe up to 4.0. Going to load 30 of each and see how my Smiths like it.

Spent the afternoon casting some RCBS 25 caliber Cowboy bullets, 87 grains in 30/1 alloy. Then another 50 Mountain Mold 40 caliber 300 grain for the 40/50 Sharps Straight, also 30/1. Now I have enough for the shooting season.

Plan on casting some of Ben's favorite #311359 in WW's + 2% tin for the 7.62X39 for sage rat season this weekend.

Ric, have you ever shot the .25-20 with black powder? The RCBS mould should carry enough grease for 3 shots in the field before a pull through spit patch would be necessary. I used BP in a Stevens .32-20 for squirrels and it would maintain minute of eye ball for 3 shots at 25 yards, minute of brain for two more, then it needed a filed expedient"cleaning".

No I have not shot it in the 25/20 but have in the 32/20. Will try that as I have some FFF left somewhere.
