What Did You Shoot Today?

This afternoon, a guy was shooting a semi-auto .30-'06 that could have been a Remington 700, 742 or 7400. I'm not familiar with any of them, but I came home with an extra 32 pieces of brass.

I have taken a few tumbles in the last few weeks while hunting. I was worried that I might have bumped my scope at some point. So around midday I decided to see if my Savage 110 in 7mm-08 was still shooting to the correct point of aim.

I set a 4” rock up on a stump. Then walked off 100 yards. Embarrassed to say that I missed it offhand, so I sat down and aimed off of my pack for the next shot. That next shot knocked it off the stump. Good enough.

That is what I shot today.

Keep us up on the Browning 53, on of my favorite rifles!
LOL Ric! I know! Have read a bunch of your stuff on the 32-20/53! Why I started on the 5.0 grn Unique with ~120 grn bullet! (forget the other load I intend to try from your notes...) Gotta get a good set of Skinner dovetail/front post sights on it.

I have never been able to shoot a scoped rifle well offhand. Something I should probably practice.

Yesterday, I worked on a new reloading article for the .38/200 S&W Military and Police. This one is an uncommon 4-inch model purchased by the British Purchasing Commission and delivered to the Canadian armed forces in 1940. Sold out of service after 1950, so commeriallly reproofed before export.

I FINALLY got some trigger time this evening after spending the last three days busting my butt to get my 100-yard backstop functional again. Got just enough sand shoveled in there to make it safe and sighted in my PSA .223 Wylde upper. Sorry, no cast this time, but I'm back in business. As soon as I get the crib doors built and my 12V solar target lighting system wired up again I can shoot after work in this infernal winter time change.

With enough practice, you shouldn't need lighting. When I was in the academy we shot at night and at first I thought that's impossible.
Turns out, after a lot of training, I could shoot just as poorly at night as I could in the sunlight.;)

Shot 50-round each with the Randall and the 3" Lew Horton S&W Model 24-3 this morning. Lyman's 452374 with 5.0-grain of Unique, Lyman's 452460 with 6.0-grains of WSF, and Lyman's 429421 with 11.9 and 13.0-grains of 2400. Haven't shot the S&W in close to three years so it took some getting used to. And those grips are so comfortable. Brass is in the tumbler, and cleaning the guns is next. The model '86 is also 45-70. Shot the 385 grain PB in it. I think I cast those about 10 years ago.

Both of those cartridges were loaded with 4759. Think I'll go back to 4198 and save the very precious 4759 for duplexing the holy black.

that 86 is a lot nicer than my Browning.
but then again most of my guns look like that one Ric showed.... and several look a lot worse.

Someday I'll have to get a Cody letter on this Model '86. It is a black powder era rifle and qualifies as a C&R. This, as most of the evil guns I used to have before they went down on the Titanic, was inherited from "dear old Dad" (have to say that with tongue-in-cheek).
It is one of my favorites.
Was obviously a special order; coarser than standard checkering (which I really, really like) on the XXX furniture, case hardened receiver, set trigger, half octagon barrel and button magazine. The tang sight is not the correct model for the model '86.

You've two beautiful rifles, RJ.

My rolling block has a half-octagon half-round barrel. Anyone know its purpose?

The standard Remington commercial forend blanks were cut for an octagonal barrel; military for a round barrel. Making the front of the barrel round reduced weight (barely a few ounces) but was stylish. People were as picky about how their rifle looked then as much as we are now.

Thanks, Ric.

My druthers would prefer the rifle had an full-octagon barrel. Still that .45-70 rolling block is a hoot-to-shoot rifle.
