What Did You Shoot Today?

California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
Ruger 10/22.

History: Bought the rifle in '95 or '96, for my wife who has only shot it at one range session. I've had it out less than a score of times.
Condition: Box stock, except for a Volquartsen hammer and ejector, an extended magazine release, an a Bushnell 4-12X40 scope.
Ammunition oh hand: CCI Mini-Mag, Eley Club and Target, Remington Golden and Thunderbolt, Winchester Ten-X and Wildcat.
Ammunition likes and dislikes: It has never liked the Mini-Mags, and of the rest it prefers Ten-X.
Plan of attack: Buy premium ammunition!

The Taurus 66 6 inch.
Spent most of my day running between the loading bench and the range.
Work ups and testing for the pan lubed lyman #358311.
Did a work up in 38 special. Settled on 4.4 grain H-Universal for it. Nice mellow shooter in the .357.
Then worked up a load in .357. Settled for 16.3 grain H-110.
Went home and loaded up 50 more, then back to the range for some fun plinking. Needed to burn thru at least 50 to be sure of the lubes functionality.
So set up a few targets to check MOA, and to practice with.
No leading, no noticable lube spatter, no mess to clean up. Just a lot of fun shooting the .357 with a hotter load.

A fellow club member had his chronograph set up and would not let me shoot thru it.
I have a reputation for shooting out my Oehler. Some things just stick with ya. LOL
But he did shoot the last 6 rounds thru his for me. 1242 fps average with 7 fps variation. So not too bad.
Felt good to get out the Taurus again. It is the first gun I learned to load for. A lot of memories with it as my whole family and a few select friends has shot it.

I took time to escape to the range today, colder weather is coming tomorrow. Though I had not shot it much, the Wards Model 15A had shown that it could be a good shooter. Yesterday I stopped in at the gun shop and found a CenterPoint 4.5-14x scope and rings in the used and buy it now box. $30.00. I figured it would be the perfect scope for the Wards. Sight-in was perfect. After that I plunked 10 CCI-SV's into a one dime size hole at 25 yards. Heck, my fancy CZ won't do any better.

Try some CCI Standard Velocity. My 22s like it best of all that I have tried.

10/4 went out with son and grandson in law and shot Swiss 1911 chambered in .308, Colt gold cup NM 45, Garand 308, and some lead rounds out of Swede Mauser M38. First time shooting all but 45. Then picked up about a thousand fired brass off ground. Good times.

It's been a while for me (shooting at range).
Today's range visit was testing my new, umm I mean old CZ452 that I acquired at the Gunshow 10 days ago.
Weather was Perfect. I guess today will be our last day of Southern California-like weather that Ian gave to Minnesota, Canada is supposedly sending a taste of winter by the weekend!

Seems every shot, I busted a clay.
Besides some CCI Blazers, I brought a box of CCI standard velocity ammo that I bought after one of the shortages where
NO 22LR could be found...they had about the same umph as a CB, I'm wondering if they were
mis-packaged? or many it's just been a long time since I shot SV ammo in a long barreled bolt action rifle?
Anyway, I emptied 3 boxes of blazers...so much fun.

Well, I did get to shoot some this week. There were two big projects. First up I came up on an old classic. It was a built up rifle on an old civilian FN hunting rifle action and Flaig's barrel in 7x57. The scope was an old B&L 2-8 scope with external adjustments in the base. I put together fifteen handloads with J bullets. Rifle gave near internet level of accuracy. It's a neat old rifle that shoots wonderfully. Cast bullets are on the agenda. Pictures to follow.

Next on the list is a Ruger Mark III 22/45. I used this new to me handgun in our weekly Wednesday semi-bullseye match. The rules are modified for the the over the hill gang-two hands. My first outing with the gun was truly rotten and all that implies. I had not really done much shooting in the last few months after a full knee replacement.

I checked the 30-30, the 38-55, and the 44-40 to make sure they are ready for deer season next month. They are, with 193gr, 250gr, and 220 gr cast bullets. It's been a few years since I've used my home made lead on a deer- so I'm hopeful.

Cranked off a mag full of 9 in my BHP. I have to qualify for my HR 218 next Wednesday. I'll shoot a mag a day leading up to the re-qual.

Was going to shoot test rounds in the .38 Special Uberti 1866, also the .223 Ruger American with some of its Sierra 77-grain HPBT Match accuracy load. This morning's unexpected plumbing woos, and the on-going painting project changed the plans.

What did I shoot today. We were able to make it to the monthly meeting of our black powder club-the Elk River Long Rifles. The rifle I took was a custom cap lock Hawken with Rice 50 caliber barrel. Lock and trigger were from L&R; . The rifle was built for me by John Anderson of Tullahoma, TN. John passed recently. John was a pioneer in the rebirth of blackpowder shooting. One rifle here has lock and triggers John made and sold. We lost a great friend and mentor. There are all sorts of niches in the shooting world.
