What Did You Shoot Today?

California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
Testing out some silhouette loads for the k31... tried lee 155gr g/c over some 2400. Seems to work pretty well! Practiced out to 100yds.
I used to have two K-31s -- a '43 and a '55 -- and they were accurate shooters, but could not get used to their front sights' inward turned protective ears. Sold the '43 to my local friend and occasional shooting pard for the $89 I paid for it, the other went for a goodly price via consignment. No, I do not miss either of them.

California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
Shot the .38 Special Uberti 1866 sporting rifle and the .223 Ruger American.

1866: Settled on an accuracy load of 8.0-grains of 2400 and the de-bevel based Lee 358-158 RF. Tested 8.5 and 9.0-grains, but the groups opened up. Don't know why I didn't test 2400 till last week, because it's used as accuracy loads with almost all my other cast bullet calibers.

Ruger American: Shot its Sierra 77-grain HPBT Match accuracy load of 24.0-grains of IMR 4895. When I hold my tongue just right it shoots .4 to .6 100 yard MOA.

Another on-track event will keep the range closed till the 21st.

308 henry, did little worse at 50 than 100 with front and rear bags. Just used front for hunting practice. Its a thumper load. 2 touching and 3 within an inch. 168 Amax, 42gr I4895.
Same with BO pistol, little too much for the pistol (168 gr gc 1750 fps 2 coats BLL). But did keep them on paper. BLL works great. Mould is for AR10 that I don't have anymore, shoot up the GCd ones. Better use that in rifle. Recoil is ferocious for the 10" pistol. As my forehead says. No pressure signs though.

Had to do an annual qualification for my HR 218 retired officers carry authorization. First three rounds, take one step to your right, at the beep, draw and fire, you have three seconds. I wore my cheaters so I could see the front sight. Two in the bad guy's left eye one in the right, pupils gone. After the first mag the range officer scores the targets, walks up, looks, shakes his head, "Duke, Duke, Duke". Walks off to the next officer's target. 3 yards, 7 yards, 15 yards, 25 yards, malfunction drills, strong hand, weak hand etc. No dropped rounds. Glad I brought a rain jacket.

Came home hooked up with my regular fishin' partner. Weather went wonky on us. 63° when I shot, and hour later when we got down to the River it was 46° but we were going about 20 miles up north and by the time we launched it was 51° and partly cloudy and the wind had swung back from the South. Actually got pretty nice before the frontal system came through a little after 2:00pm with a radical wind switch and the white caps came rolling in. Got some really decent blue gills, a couple of yellow perch, and a big sheepshead that we kept.

Came home filleted the fish and sent my buddy home with them. He left about 2 hours ago and should just be getting home.

Up at Wilton yesterday, buddy Bill was shooting his .25-20 SS Low Wall. Boy is that little caliber accurate. He was shooting the chicken at 200 yds and had a sub-MOA group going. I think the bullet was something like 117 gr.

Another guy at the club, Craig has one, too and his is another tack driver. Another nice feature is zero recoil. The downside is brass availability. Nobody is making it and you cannot make it from another case. There is a process to make it from .223 brass, but you need a 20 ton hydraulic press and some special dies. If anyone knows of any .25-20 SS brass available, please let me knew. Both of these guys breach seat their bullets which means their brass should last indefinitely. But they would love to score some more.

S&W Model 1989 45 AR with 4.5 grains of SR7625 and Ed Harris's 265 grain RN FP. At 50 feet is was as good as I could hold them, core group about an inch and "heelers" and "pushers" back and forth.

Still trying to get the 40/50 Sharps Straight to shoot, but not going very quickly. Oh well, it has only been 12 years.

I shot my pre-owned Ruger Mark III 22/45. The gun had a red dot sight attached. Shooting the gun with that sight was a disaster. No way to get that gun zeroed......unless set up correctly. It was a shooter problem.

As soon as I can score some 2400 it will be back to the 30 calibers. Also, getting stuff ready to load some 35 Remington for my Remington 141 pump. So far, the newly acquired old custom Mauser Supreme 7x57 is working very well. Neat old mid-60's rifle with period B&L 2-8 variable scope.

I shot my .308 M1 Garand today for the first time with cast bullets. Had a great time. I had used a Larry Gibson post suggesting to start at 28gr of H-4895 and work up until the bolt cycled reliably.

I didn't have time to load too many, but I did load 8 enbloc clips with the Lyman 311299 and the NOE 169gr FP at 28.0 grains and 29.3 grains. The 311299 came close to cycling 100% at 29.3 grains. So next outing I will try 30gr's of H-4895 and see how that does. I was getting 1,800-1,900 fps per my chronograph with these loads. The lighter 169 grain bullet did not cycle at all at those powder charge levels. The 600 yard rear sight setting was pretty much dead on at 50 yards with these loads.

I am going to try the Saeco 315 and the RCBS 165 Sil next time just for fun. I bought an NOE XCB mold for my birthday last year, but I haven't even cast with it yet. So now that it is cooler in Houston, I may have to cast a few up and give that one a try too. Groups were OK at 50 yards, but I am sure I would have shot better if I didn't have to wonder whether it picked up the next round each time it fired.

My Ruger 300 Blackout shot flawlessly as always. I have it zeroed with sub-sonic loads. But today I shot quite a few 147gr and 110 gr jacketed bullets loaded with N-110, Lil Gun, and a couple other powders. All shot well, but of course to an impact much higher than my subsonic loads. My buddy had a box of 220gr factory subsonic loads that he was shooting in his Rem700 with a can. So I shot the first factory round through my Ruger - and it hit dead center of the target and to the same point of impact as my 200gr cast subsonic loads that I normally shoot.

The cow pasture was getting pretty warm by 3pm, so we decided to call it quits. But first we had to finish off our moon clipped 45 acp loads in our S&W 625's at the fifty yard steel. That was a hoot too.

I took the 22/45 to the indoor range. The SIG dot sight was adjusted correctly. I was possible to zero the gun having named the shooters errors. The gun has worst trigger experienced lately. I've got a match this coming Wednesday. We'll see how it works out.

Ten rounds are loaded up to get the [141] Remington going after the pistol match. Loads were 185 gr. Speer's using Accurate 2015. Cast bullets are on the agenda. First comes the 7x57.

Today - compared the S&W 1917 to the Ruger Red Hawk, both with 45 ACP. 100 YO Smith shoots particular load MUCH better. Not sure if its the load or the great Smith trigger vs ugly heavy Ruger trigger. But Ruger shot a cylinder of 45 Colt well, so...

Yesterday was deer rifle day. 2x 45-70s, 7-30 Waters 94 and Contender, 358 Win, 35 Rem and Win 1895 405 Win. Set with 1x 45-70, both 7-30 Waters, and the 358 Win. Others need some tweaking (sights/loads/etc). Have some others to get zeroed with a load they like. I like options! lol

Today I shot 30-30, .22, 9mm, .38 Special, .40S&W and 7x57mm.
All did well except the 1916 7mm- it's barrel has been declared dead to me. 3 Federal 175gr into 14" @40yds.....
Might be worth it to send that 7mm to Norm Johnson in Turtle Lake, ND and have his rebore it to 9x57. He turned a 7.65x53 that had been rechambered to an over size .30-06, into a .35 Whelen for a very reasonable sum, but that was years ago.

L Ross, I have thought of that- asking Jes to do a 9(.358”)x 57…I’ll look up Mr. Johnson as well, thanks. But I have two Tikka barrels and one 700 Remington barrel that can be rethreaded for the 93 action, then rechambered. If done correctly, I could have a choice of .250 Savage or .257 Roberts, 7x57mm, or 7.62x57 wildcat. I’ll probably lean towards the Roberts and save the other two to re-fit to the 98 actions that I also have. Or build another 30-30 to push my luck haha.
This action is dated 1922 but doesn’t have the thumb slot for stripper clips, like my 1926 does. This one also lacks the hinged floor plate of the other. Nevertheless, the action is pleasingly smooth, as is the trigger- which is a bonus.

Forgot to post this last Sunday. This was my 300 yd target shot with my 03 Springfield. 17gr of 2400 under an NOE 314210 bullet cast with 20:1. The group size is not bad for 300 yds. But that's not why I took the pic. My last name starts with an S and when I was done, I noticed that I'd shot an S on the target. That S is 14 rounds, 4 sighters and 10 for score. I was constantly adjusting windage between every shot.

Eat your heart our Zorro!! Anybody can do it with a sword!
