What I should have invested in!

People talk about "art", as in paintings, and go all gaga. Or in music or acting. That stuff is pretty one dimensional compared to the luthiers art, which encompasses not just visual art but sound and feel to. If it sounds good but is butt ugly and has a 2x4 neck with an action that leaves the strings 3/4" above the frets...that's poor art. There are at least 3 or 4 dimensions in luthiery.

Yeah Bret, and I'll..... don't know quite how to say it, to add...

Building trad bows.... which takes wood engineering to about as high a degree as it gets? Most give, musical instruments the nod for complexity but,but...Haha.

Oh,am sending you a PM on your car search.

Nicest guitar, I had the pleasure to play, was a blond Rickenbacker. My high school buddy owned it. I had/have a cherry red Harmony three pickup. Weren't very expensive back in the 60's. Looked mine up on E-bay and they were going for $1500.

blond Rickenbacker very nice one, tried to get a 12 string one from a guy dropping out of school, no deal but I did get his dual showman. Had a harmony archtop that got de-arched when I left it in the dorm over holiday. Tried a P-bass back then, way too heavy for me and the guy played country 3 note rhythm. Looked at a new A. S. P-bass a couple years ago, total junk.

ITS, thanks for the suggestion but that's 750 miles away! I'm up on the Canadian border. Thanks anyways.

In the early 80's I bought a no name Japanese made 12 string dreadnought at the Cherry Point PX. That chintzy thing had the nicest action of any 12 string I've ever played and it sounded pretty good too, as do most 12 strings. Pawned it off for road trip money to get my 70 Chevelle SS home before I shipped out to Okinawa. I always figured it was a Takamine factory 2nd or something or out of one of the other factories over there at the time. Nice rig though.

Yup, got a nice 1st generation Takamine with great sound. The action is a little high but I'm not messing with it. She's really showing her age though. Lost the original adjustable bridge when it split in 2 and a so called repair place put a cheap non adjustable on that I hate. Got my youngest boy a used Yamaha, probably 90's era, very nice tone and action.

A bit off the track as far as investment goes other than Gibsons etc.,
but I am inclined to think investment in powder and primers is sound.
About a minimum of a 6-10 year supply would seem about right to me.

Prior to the last presidential election, I did buy enough to see me through till the next one. At the present, I have enough left to see me beyond it, but I will be keeping a close eye on the political weather vane.

Finding primers and powder locally is close to impossible, so it becomes a matter of saving up and placing a Powder Valley order.

Same here.
Waiting for Powder Valley to declare a hazmat free weekend!
They occasionally have free shipping on certain powders, but never seems to be AA powders.
Need me some AA1680.

We have a few stores that have powder and primers, but they cost more locally than Powder Valley with shipping and Hazmat included.
Go figure!

Powder Valley is a little over 3 hrs drive from here. I wonder if they allow order pickup?
Saving hazmat would be nice for those of us in eastern KS.

Good news. I'll have to think on this, see if any friends need any powder and primer
to make it more worthwhile. 6 hrs rd trip is still a good bit of travel....may even be a
cost issue with fuel, have to figger on that a bit. Could erase the cost savings.

I was gonna fly up there with someone from the other site in '11 for a big buy, but it never came together. I understand there's a municipal airport fairly close to PV. How much powder can you pack in your kit plane, Bill?

I could get a lot, but just somehow I think that would be a bad idea. And plans, no kit. :)

I once hauled 12 gallon cans of paint out to Colorado for the cabin. THAT was fun. NOT.
Sweating them popping open at altitude from internal pressure kept me low.

UH - gulp.....had not even though in those terms, Keith. Probably not illegal, but it
might make for an interesting visit from the local police if someone saw you loading
something like 20 8lb containers of powder into the back seat..

Makes me nervous as the pilot and aircraft owner, and I am absolutely certain of my
peaceful motive.
Yikes!
