June gloom, the last two mornings, caused me to graduate from a light weight flannel shirt to a medium weight one, and then wearing it till 9:30 or 10 a. m. Now that September is right round the corner, I give the gloom another two weeks before is starts to recede.

The fire is 95% contained, but a smokey haze remains visible. Last night's sunset was stunning, with the addition of a pretty pink fog caused by the ultra red, smoke filtered sun shining through a fog bank.

Nice day here, 86* as a type this and 31% humidity. Still a bit of smoke haze going on, but the cooler temps and higher humidities are a real boon to wildland firefighting. The cooler temps for the past week almost guarantee that the white-winged doves that were thick in the Imperial Valley will have migrated south into The Land Of Manana (and drug cartels). Happens every year, darn it. I won't be going out for the morning opener, I might hit the afternoon hunt at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area's upland bird section, or the Wister Unit at the Salton Sea. I'll see how I feel at noon tomorrow.

Just dumped 5-1/4" out of the gauge . Dumped it last night at @7:00 .
Flash flood warnings started at 0430 this morning , re-up'd for another 25 minutes or so .
Pretty wet out here . At least I don't have to water the ducks .

Smoky here, 4000-6000 acres of mixed timber and steppe about 15 miles north. Not too hot, low 90's, but having gusty winds blowing the fire back and forth.

Know what you are experiencing.

The big local fire is 96% contained, after eating 48,000 acres, and the smaller local fire is 98% contained and burned 6000 acres. Combined, the two fires completely destroyed about 80 homes.
The Dolan Fire, in the Big Sur area, has burned almost 30,000 acres and is 25% contained.
Because of the rough and steep terrain, and thick scrub vegetation, the fires have been very difficult to work.

Smoke is still lingering about, though dependent upon location and wind direction.

Same here. Helicopters and fixed wing are doing most of the because there are no roads. Don't send foot crews in farther than they can run away.

Damn! I know your local area. That is a HUGE amount of acreage around there! Sad to hear.

If you recall Mt. Toro, that is the River Fire, and the Carmel Fire is in the Cachagua/Arroyo Seco area.

Labor Day Weekend will be a Garden Of Earthly Delight locally. Extreme Heat Warnings are issued for Friday 10 A.M. until Monday at 8 P.M. Supposed to get "......between 100* and 115* during this period". That's really nailing it down, eh? Hate to tell ya, NWS, but that is NORMAL here in August and September. Just like 110*-120* is for the low desert (Palm Springs, El Centro). "Extreme heat", mi nalgas.

The past few days have been very pleasant, high temps at high 80s/low 90s and evenings cool enough to shut down the A/C and open the windows. Calm before the storm, I guess. 88* right now, the A/C set at 82* so it only kicks on for a few minutes each hour. If our Seattlite daughter wasn't here, we would just open up and do without the A/C today--but we are indulgent parents and she is a great young lady. We make allowances.

Cooler, but high humidity! Rain all morning! Good casting this evening!

Same here. Finally a day not over 100, but humidity very high. Rain split and went around us twice, got a few light showers but nothing significant.

Smoke today, fire blew up over 13,000 acres last night, burned five houses and cut the only paved road into the area. Probably close to 20,00 today as the wind shifted to the south and blowing smoke into the valleys and running through the sage brush steppes. Temps in the mid 90's and humidity down to about 12%.

Arson, natural?

Two of the three local fires were started by lightening strikes, but the third was arson, and he was arrested. The last big local fire, the Soberanes, was caused by an illegal campfire (pot farmers or bums), burned for three months, and killed a bulldozer operator. Of course, by the time the fire was noticed, the culprits were long gone.

Evans Canyon Fire. Unknown at this time, but there was no heat lightening the day it started. 2100 hrs report it was at 30,000 acres, five houses and 20+ ranch buildings. 15 miles to the north and south is irrigated farmland for a fire break, 20 miles east is a river. West is National Forest, but so far that is the direction the wind is from.

One of the hats I wore at work was fire cause & origin investigator, for 20 of my 28 years there. Part of that was managing the arson registrant files. There were not many of them in a given area, but they were the most non-compliant group of hairballs I ever had the misfortune to manage. I am not alone in this belief--there is a percentage of these firebugs at large that are out tossing devices ALL THE TIME. In most conditions, these devices do not cause damage or only "spot-fire" a little vegetation. But with correct environmental conditions, a conflagration erupts and goes wild.

Today is supposed to be pretty nice, 98* for a high. 102* tomorrow, and 110*+ Saturday and Sunday. Almost 10:30 A.M. now, and we still have the house opened up for fresh air, and it is very pleasant. Late October can't get here fast enough to suit me.
