I started reloading maybe 8-10 years ago. or has it been only 6? Never once have I even thought that I would be saving money by reloading (I'm a rifle only kinda guy). This journey is 100% for being able to make ammo to exactly fit my needs... well okay... to fit my wants.

worrying about $$ per round make no sense when what you want isn't being manufactured by anyone.

I picked up a dozen pounds of Graf's rebottled gunpowder in several grades a couple years ago, went in with my previous boss on a big order. IIRC it worked out to $16/pound, I have plans for it but years from now but sometimes you gotta dig into the mad money stash when opportunity arises. He bought a 55-gallon drum of green tip a few years before that when some place was running a big sale, not everyone has a business address and a forklift handy at all times so again, a few of us got in on that one which is why I don't load much .223 except cast bullets for the challenge.

I don't know whether this is 100% on target, but there was discussion "over there" yesterday about a replacement for Unique, which I am just about out of. I also use it in every caliber/cartridge I reload for. Be that as it may, Jeff Bartlett has a replacement for it, if you're interested, and at a very good price. Here's a cut and paste from his website

BR-5 Recently acquired. Brand new, current production. This is a double-based ball
type powder, originally intended for 9x19mm ammo. Meters very consistently.
Burning rate is similar to Hercules Unique, which data can be used. Additional
data available on request. Clean burning with consistent results.
This is new powder, not pulldown.
$150/7# jug BACK IN STOCK

Maybe this will be a viable alternative for some of you.

I just want more of those Russian primers I was stupid enough not to buy by the pallet when they were available.

2 # bottles of 1680 -34$ ea., last yr. Same for a # of R.D. this yr. Nope, not paying 80$ + h.m. for SPP.

1680 and 680 are twin twins.
awesome in the 25-20 too, i used the last of the 680 i had and ended up with 1680 and was super happy to have it when i got my first super mag case.

yeah those russian primers were a mucho lot better than their price would indicate.
i'm down to about 12-13K SR's, and wish i'd have sucked it up and got some of their others.

I'm almost through the 5K Tulammo .223 hard cup primers I bought to try out. By the time I realized how good they were they were all gone and importation outlawed. Oh well, the ones I did get were enjoyed thoroughly and I got plenty Winchester and CCI.

If I didn't win the reloading jackpot* a few months ago I'd give that BR-5 a try for sure.

*I was randomly looking at powder valley one day and they had unique and bullseye. Bought enough of both for at least 2 decades.

I have the good fortune of shooting at least 5 very expensive to buy cartridges. 264 WM , 45-70 , 6.5&7.7 Japanese, and 45 Colts , plus the out of print 32 Rem. The 264 has long lingered around $2.50 per shot .
The Japanese are $1.50 a shot when you can get it , the 197? Boxes of Norma have $28-34 tags .
When I started shooting 45-70 PPU 405s cost me $1.34
45 Colts were 75¢ ea before the 2012 rush/drought .
32 Rem well I've seen boxes of NOS over $80/20 .
At $76/100 for 45 Colts I once loaded for about $6/100 .
$134/100 for 45-70 I was loading for about $700 .
32 Rem delivered everything with a cast 175 any jacket could offer for $14/100
The 2 Japanese grooves are huge so cast or PP is the only option.

It was about being able to shoot them at all as much as the cost .
The 264 at $47 per 20 is 250/100 after taxes for blue box FC HyShock . Its 96/100 for TSX bullets which means it's still cheaper to load for it with monolithic copper bullets than it is to buy base model ammo .

I also like 1680. I was able to buy 5 sealed 1# bottles from friend of friend couple years back 10$ per cause he was moving cross country and moving co would. It take. He had a bunch too but most all was open bottles and I don't gamble well. So Ill buy sealed but not open lessing I really know and tryst you.

Round here I have seen 60$ for 1# of this or that powder. I have once spent 50$ but it was during a sale and I also get a discount so was under 40 @ register. Thats about my limit lessin I gotta have like that Varget for 50 (before rebate)

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I just went to Powder valley and Bartletts. I didn't recognize most of the powders. I may have outlived my era. Not sure if that's good or bad.

I purchased a few bricks of the Tula SPP and couldn't wait till I used them up. Had 2-3 FTF per hundred in stock/unaltered revolvers. Wouldn't trust my life to them.
