Ar kool-aid

A nice Model 8 in .35 Remington is on my bucket list.

I just can't do the AR thing. Carried too many M16s during my time in the Army, just can't see them as more than a tool with all the soul and personality of a shovel of a sledge hammer, maybe even less. If they are your thing, go for it, but I find them to be like watching paint dry.

Rich - my two AR builds are exactly that - as specific tools. I do tornado relief and have come upon Ner-Do-Wells looting real time. Next time I won't have just a sidearm with me, but my AR pistol!

What advantage does that give over a standard handgun? Kinda reminds me of that Mare's Leg thing Steve McQueen used to carry ion TV, looked cool, totally impractical.

Since the AR type SBR uses standard AR magazines, one could ask if perhaps it might be better to have 30 or 19 rounds in your hands. While not as handy as a hand gun, it might be just the perfect tool to solve the problem.

There is nothing "warm" about the AR, and I was never enamored with the platform until I bought a 300BLK. Then I built another, bought a 9 twist 5.56, and have built several other 300BLK, 5.56, 223 Wylde, and now a 6mm ARC. I HAD a 300BLK "pistol" until the BATFE waffled again on the brace.

IMO, the braced or SBR ARs are very useful in 300BLK. They aren't obnoxiously loud like a 5.56.

As for the 7.62x39, not in an AR, but a great caliber for the CZ 527 carbine. Mine has never seen a single round of jacketed since it eft the factory.

I built my first AR in college ~ 1994 or so. Receivers were hard to find back then. I would go to big shows in Dallas and even the Market Hall show only 2 dealers even has any. First one was built on a cast Essential Arms receiver. Still have the gun. Shoots fine. There was a time when FN-FAL kits were being imported. I build many of those. Much more difficult to build than an AR but everything could be done at home with a few fixtures and specialty tools. Still have most of those rifles too!

Hasn’t been the case for me. I still love them. My safe is full of ARs and Marlin lever actions. The heart wants what the heart wants.
Me too. My business is evidence destruction for LE agencies and Crime labs, etc. I now get a ton of AR's for destruction. All different calibers and barrel lengths. I have over 50 uppers in the warehouse from different cases. We only are required to destroy the Receiver. I keep a decent supply of clean, non Crime Gun Receivers on hand and build a different one now and them. I even have a stash of SBR registered Receivers for the short barrel ones.

1 lower and 2 uppers, both 5.56 x 45. The A2 is good for about 1.3" to 1.5" at 100 yards with issue irons, the A4/24" barrel and 12x Leup is a rightful 1/2" rifles with several j-words. They won't see castings.

I really want to build an update M16 (AR) Heavy Barrel 20" w/ rifle stock - because it was a fav when I was in. F front sight. Only 'modern' upgrade I will do is a flattop (vs orig carry handle) because it is MUCH easier to mount optics to the flattop than to the old school carry handle. And, I have a flattop mount carry handle/A2 sight set for the flattop if irons are desired/required.

I actually Despise the platform as well. For no real apparent reason. I have "built" rifles of each of my sons when they were learning to shoot.
I used the term "Built" more loosely than most as they are snap together propositions.

The reason I like them for kiddos is the adjustability of the stock.

I currently own 2. 1 started out life as a Bushmaster A2 Hbar 5.56. It had been changed to a flat top in .50 beowulf and a few other things. It is now a 5.56 flat top with 20 inch tube and gets taken out of the safe only when I move.

The other is a 350 Legend. It wears the night vision. It gets treated like a rented mule and keeps on ticking.

I was going to put a daytime scope on it for grandson to deer hunt, but I picked up another Ruger bolt (youth) in 350.

They are good guns for sure as seen by their popularity. Just not my cup of tea.

I got out of the AR game long before the current trends exploded. I’ve toyed with the idea of building something just for me, but there was always someplace else to direct those funds.

I probably should buy a lower and an upper just to squirrel away for some future project. Like Oscarflytyer, I would likely opt for a flattop upper simply because it’s easier to deal with optics. I have a strong dislike for the forward assist, so I’d probably go with a slick-side upper. I would want a lower with the “fence” around the magazine release, so it would end up being a little of the old and a little of the new. Not sure how I feel about the dust cover, I could take it or leave it.

Don’t need every surface covered with rails. Don’t need anything beyond a single point sling. Don’t need a super short barrel and may not even need a collapsible stock.

Enough twist rate to stabilize a 62 grain bullet, decent back up sights and a good quality compact scope. Don’t care about flash hiders, bayonet lugs, vertical front grips, or other such things. Just need a decent barrel that shoots well.

I see people with tricked out AR’s and they use them like overgrown pistols. 80% of them couldn’t hit a paper plate at 100 yards and 95% couldn’t hit anything at 200 yards. If that’s what you want to do with a rifle, have at it, but it’s not for me.

I have assemebled most of my uppers with parts of my own choosing. All are flat tops, none wear iron sights, and those that were intended to shoot cast bullets have forward assist. I despise quad rails for both their size and abrasive nature. My preference is for handguards just long enough to cover the gas block, or even to leave an adjustable gas block exposed. I favor variable optics, genrally LPVOs, but have used dots, prisms, and even up to 12x variables.

Most of my uppers have thread protectors, and those that don't wear a simple linear comp that directs blast downrange. I don't have any flashlights to provide an aiming point for somehone else or lasers to slow my presentation while searching for the dot. There is nothing quicker than a shotgun for up close work.

My lowers have better than milspec triggers, and other than the typical plastic, finger grooved grip. Buttstocks are of both the fixed and adjustable variety depending upon the intended purpose.

I do shoot cast in 300BLK and 5.56. My 300BLK proved itself some years back when I shot in a cast bullet match out to 500m. I tied for high overall that day with 4x while shooting against a Tom Gray built Rem722 in heavy barreled 35Rem with Jewel trigger and 25x Leupold. My 9 twist 556 loads seem to shoot as well at 200 yards as they do at 100, and I do shoot them to 300 on my local range if the wind and mirage aren't too hateful. If they aren't "full function loads", I don't shoot them in gas guns.

While they don't have the soul of blued steel and walnut, these adult tinker toys can be useful tools.

Well I was gifted two lowers one Christmas. I had expressed interest in having an AR so my BIL and a very good friend knew about my desires and gifted me with a couple of lowers both without realizing the other was gifting the same. So I went from empty to full on a fine Christmas. I’ve put BCA 556 Wylde 1-9 18” uppers on, one with folding sights and one with a Athlon 2x12 scope. I have a few 10 round magazines which mount flush, much preferred for every day stuff as I’m not fending off the zombies.
Both are flat tops with adjustable stocks. That’s as fancy as it gets for me. They both shoot quite well, very happy.
I intend to purchase a 7.62 x39 upper to swing onto the one with open sights. The only way I’m going to get another lower is if it’s Christmas again.
I am a blue steel and walnut guy but I don’t mind the AR’s when the lights are off. It’s kinda like closing time thing.
