I was a poor college kid, paying my own way with no loans back during the height of the SKS flooding the market. I purchased 2. A pinned barreled gun for $69 and a proper screw in barrel for $79. Cases of that Chinese ammo was $69/1200 round wooden crate.
Chinese AK's or "MAK 90" was $189 and too spendy for me.

We referred to them as our "Dumpster Guns" as we figured if one ever broke, we'd just toss them in a dumpster and get a new one.

They made darn fine blasting entertainment on the cheap. I still have those things and they never see daylight from the safe.

I eventually picked up an Egyptian Maadi. I believe the "bluing" is some sort of trash put on with a brush. Its been hot enough to cook the "bluing" and bubble the finish on the wood. We tried like hell to run enough ammo through it and get it hot enough for failure. All we ever did is burn our hands. I sold it off at some point.

Good old days

They had barrels of bayonets at the Dallas Market Hall gun shows for 50 cents each. We used them for tent stakes way back when.
