Lyman 457122 HP. Commonly known as the Gould HP. A classic 45-70 bullet.

That bullet from pure lead and sized to .452 is unreal in inline muzzleloaders. I shot a couple deer with it as did my dad. Dad shot one over snow that went 25 yards or so. He said it looked like it was carrying a leaky bucket of red paint.
Imagine a pure lead bullet at 1600 fps. Opens up and holds together. Like a can opener for deer shaped cans.

nice find! heard about them. also about the old Steyr 95s converted. that one is a straight bolt, and I bet would be a hoot. but cant bring myself to convert mine (or my son's). They are awesome in original guise as 8x56R and I am set up to cast/reload and want to hunt with mine

Both of those bullets look like smooth feeding, and should handle anything that gets in they're way.
Looking forward to some range results.

That 457483 shoots very accurately for me, hope it does for you as well. Nice old black powder design that still functions well today.

I still have a box of those 457-483's an old fellow cast and lubed for me just as I was getting into casting. I spent a day trying to soak up everything he was showing me. Wish I could have spent more time with him. He had a rifle like yours Ben. His mold was hollow pointed. Harvested a few deer with that bullet in my 1895.

Most everyone says the 483' at 385 grs. is a good general purpose hunting bullet for the 45/70.

Never used that one on a deer. No reason it would do just fine.

Here is my 325 gr. plain base Gould, factory HP.
It cast at .4605" with ACWWs.
I'm anxious to shoot this one in my new 45/70 also.
I cast about 75 of these today. They will be sized .460" and lubed
with Ben's Red and BLL.
It is a real killer and doesn't need 1,600 fps + to be a killer on deer.
It works well on deer at 1,200 - 1,400 fps :

I wish mine cast that fat. Mine runs right at .457+, way smaller than my Marlin prefers.
That is such a classic 45-70 bullet.

The only real limit with that rifle is how much punishment your shoulder can stand. I have reached
2050 with my GG before I was so far past fun that I decided to stop doing it. Gun was fine. That
thing will probably safely do 2500 fps with a 405gr, if your shoulder can stand it and you can imagine
an application on this continent. I expect that a good 405 at 2100 would make even a griz into a
pile of meat pretty quickly.

Nice find, sir. And it will probably do just fine on paper with 12 gr of Unique, too.

I plan to load 12.0 - 12.5 Unique with my 390 gr. g/c bullet.
Should shoot well.
Books say the Siamese 98 Mauser can handle pressure.
I doubt seriously I'll ever find out if it can or not.:D:D:D

You, your shoulder, and fun will run out long before the gun is stressed.
On a now defunct forum I was often berated by a guy for not loading even everything to the gills. Seems loaded a gun below max is a sissy move. Well, this sissy learned long ago that shooting for fun and pain don't go together.
