Ruger No. 1 350 Legend ?

Back when Ruger made a special edition CA HWY PATROL 1A in 357 Magnum. Pretty much a bomb in the market.

Looking at all the dimensions, I believe a simple rechamber and switch to 223 extractor would allow the transformation and make a nice "walk about" rifle.

Whatcha think ?

Not a fan of the Maximum...See no reason for it in a rifle...but than again I see no reason to chamber a rife for a pistol cartridge!
358 win would be nicer!

I'd study the bore and groove dimensions from an upset slug and compare to the SAAMI chamber drawing dimensions and the + tolerance given before committing to the Legend.

Go max and you can always shoot mags in it if you have to.

Can't say that for the specialized brass for the "Legend." If a train wrecked and a rail car full of "Legend" brass spilled into my yard and the RR refused to clean it up, maybe.

The max has a lot going for it. Just cant shoot it in an AR is all.

@JWFilips , one reason would be a 5# rifle. I love it as a Handi or Contender carbine, but if I were toting a 8# rifle, yeah, I'd want more oomph.

EDIT: ...but anyone can chamber anything they like in whatever gun they like if it doesn't become a grenade. I don't see the merit in AR-specific cartridges, for example, in a full-sized gun that will take a full-sized cartridge, but if someone wants to do it for fun, why not?

I’m not familiar with the details of the Ruger No1. But I would be a bit worried about extractor function with a rebated rim cartridge. The .357 Max would only require a re-chambering, and would offer nearly the same powder capacity.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Here are mine.
1. I don't want a shoulder beating 6&1/2 rifle.
2. The 357 Maximum is dead as the dodo.
3. 350 Legend ammo is not hard to find and 100 cases are a lifetime supply.
4, It does not have a rebated rim, it is a rimless cartridge
5. It's chambered in many platforms already.
6. I handload so can have a 38 short Colt round ball load if I wish.

I see no reason not to.

It's your gun, do what you want. My thought is that it's worth far more in it's present state than it will be if you go the Legend route- which IMO is a really lame cartridge produced just to sell some guns. If you want more power, and it doesn't seem you really do, then the Max is the route. I fail to see what the Legend offers and since it's a 9mm and not a 358 your barrel dimension may not be optimal. Your comment on the 357 max being dead as the Dodo make little sense to me because in 10 years the 350 Legend will likely be a popular as the 9mm Federal or 6.5 Rem Mag. But, it's YOUR GUN, do what makes you happy.

100% your gun your choice. But ya asked!! ;) :p

Also the Legend case IS a rebated rim case!! Winchester choose to change the 223/556 case to be tapered by expanding its base, leaving rim alone, making a rebated rim case....

Also NOTHING is "dead" to a re loader who knows there hobby.

Okay, this is the first time I have heard of the 350 Legend, not being a fan of self loading firearms. If I comprehend what I am reading, the Legend is not easily made from 5.56 brass?

I ask because a bolt action built around a 5.56 wildcat does sound fun.

Thanks for your thoughts. Last rebuttal.
1. it's a $1000 gun that can be rebarreled to anythiing.
2. I'm 79 10 years dms.
3. Ruger No 1s were made in 284 Win, a seriously rebated rim.
4 . I load lotsa weird stuff: 41 Swiss, 280 Ross, 400 Whelen, 22-06 etc.

I'm really into No 1s like this 6.5-300 BEE w/30" bbl, 127 LRX @3700 same OAL as 26" bbl bolt gun.

add my 2 cents in for the 357 maximum cause.
just because the case is 2"s long don't mean you gotta fill it full of H-110, and stuff a 180gr. silhouette bullet on top.
there's like 11teen other powders that work just fine, and about 14trillion molds to choose from.

I shoot 250gr. bullets out of my revolver on top of AA-2230. and sometimes I occasionally shoot like 6grs of bulls-eye under a 125gr. rnfp just to remember what a light 38 special target load is like.

If it was mine I’d leave it as is. In fact the first rifle I build from scratch will most likely be a rook rifle/single shot carbine in 38 Special or 357 Mag

If I had that No.1 I would have to find a new project to build.

But if I did mess with it, I would go with 358 Win. I like having a minimum of 500 pieces of brass for every rifle I own. I would have no qualms about reforming .308 to make that brass.

It's YOUR gun! Do what makes you happy! I've only even seen maybe 3 #1's in my 61 years. The thought of messing with something so pretty would never enter my mind.

Hello Kevin!!

Winchester really fudged things up with this Legend. From its .355 bore to its modified 223/556 case. Both NEEDLESS!! A simple 223/556 case FULL with a real 35 RIFLE bore and bullet. DONE! Nope. I equate it to this 9mm is better then anything lunacy. As a reloader and caster we can make anout anything work..
