Last week, I started working on a riding lawn mower I got at off Craigslist at Christmas time, Snapper 25 inch cut that needs a motor transplant. Originally had a 6.5 hp, but someone put an 8 hp Briggs on it, which now has a hole in the side of the case, where the connecting rod tried to escape. A friend gave me 10HP Craftsman/Tecumseh that needs a carb kit ...among other things. I ordered some parts, which all have arrived, just waiting for a relatively warm/dry day to continue that project.

Meanwhile, the garden is coming along pretty good

Ian, how do you tell which joints to resolder?

The relay has five pins and there are another four pins going to one of the outside plugs that provides main power and ground to the solenoid system. Those are the main ones to re-flow. The code is for the relay circuit (fails the continuity test "ping" on startup) so all connections there are suspect. Typically all the IC and component joints on the board do ok, it's just the high flex/vibration connector pins and the high thermal-cycle relay mount that are the problem. I never spotted a crack, but something had separated somewhere and re-flowing fixed it.

heading down to Utah to go to a Hockey game tomorrow.
the grandson should love it, he will sit and watch almost an entire period on TV.
which is amazing since he won't sit through a whole kids cartoon, but will watch Curling and Hockey no problem.
I told the daughter I think he might be part Canadian... LOL.

Must really like hockey to make a 6 hour round trip out if it. :)

I worked 7 hours and dealt with the news that a young lady I hired 11 years ago as a pregnant 18 year old Rx tech was killed last evening. She and her hubby were on a motorcycle and got hit by a 16 year old driving a truck going too fast.
What a waste.

Very sad news, Brad. Condolences to their families, friends, and you.

After that we looked and looked for that missing tire chain. Walked the tire ruts probing with a shovel and hoe. Gord thinks it might be unde the round bale they are feeding on currently. I think that one chain is near $200.00 now and I'm not happy. If it's in the mud the only way I'll find it is to plow that field, (it needs it bad), and run a chisel (which I don't have) or a single shank subsoiler (which I do have) across the field. And then if it's under the bale that still won't find it.

Metal detector???

That's such a tragedy Brad, a mother, wife, daughter, probably a sister. Damn. Any other details other than a truck and speed?

No other details. Alcohol not expected to be a factor. A poor 16 year old kid going to fast and now he will spend the rest of his life knowing he killed 2 people. That will weigh heavily on him for a long time to come.

How sad. Worked on our cycle today and have ridden hundreds of thousands of miles. Almost all of my non duty riding has been two up with my wife. Stories like yours Brad just strike too close to home. My condolences to you and for your friend's family.

Bret you can pick up a cheap-o metal detector for like 30$.
it seems like a waste of money or super duper cheap and would be junk but they are as good as a middle of the line 70's-80's model that cost a couple hundred bucks back then.

Dang Brad.
their kid/s are gonna really suffer, it's amazing how things affect so many other than just those involved.

yeah Jimbo, I like hockey.
I even try to follow some college teams like North Dakota when I can.
but they ain't gonna come here so I got no other alternative than to go there.. LOL.
the G-Boy done a lot better than I thought he would, he was all over the first period, but didn't appreciate sitting right behind the bench so much.
he kept yelling at the coach and banging on the glass every time he stopped in front of him,
I got a kick out of that, all I could think was well we got a 1-1/2 YO glass banging hockey fan here.
he finally run out of steam with a couple of minutes left in the third period and the match was all over by then anyway so we called it good and started out.

but I will drive down to soldier hollow to watch the Bi-Athlon and even went to Vegas last year to watch some of the Curling championships.
that's further than I have ever driven to go hunting... and just barely a few miles further than I have to go fishing.

Jon I know that feeling.
we spent about 2.5 hrs. yesterday shoveling snow out of the garden just so the ground under the black covers could start warming up a little.
the blackberries and blue berries I have potted up in the garage are starting to form fruit on them and I can't even dig a hole to get them in the ground yet.
the ones outside look like they are dead and I had to cut some broken branches off them from the snow weighing them down.

Sorry to hear that, Brad. A real shame. I ride a motorcycle, but not real often and not on busy roads hardly
ever. Selling the Rebel soon, will just have the old '75 CB125 to buzz around upon occasion. Never really got "into it",
but enjoy piddling around the edges a little bit.

I spent 90 days in traction in 1971 from a motorcycle, and will be getting a new knee in June, the long
term result of that same event.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Life is very, very fragile. No reason to all of this sometimes. I trust in the idea that there is a greater meaning to all this than we can comprehend. Thoughts and prayers to all her friends and family.

Metal detector. Thats an idea. I tried one looking for a Leatherman I dropped in the chaff and bedding (and manure) once. Never found the tool. Chains are a lot bigger target, might be worth a try. Thanks for the idea guys.

Cold and wet here again, but what the heck, it IS April. No snow in the forecast except for a couple periods later this week and they are just a couple hour periods at dawn. It's slowly drying out and thawing out. I may be able to start working on things soon. Got quite a bit of "lay on your back" type work under crawlers to do. That really isn't something you want to do in 3" of muddy ice water. Been there, done that, got the tee shirt. Need to start hauling fence posts too. Got a dead tractor to haul over to a neighbors so he can split it and fix a bearing way down deep inside the tranny. The tractor is just about the same age as I am (it's a '58, I'm a '59) so I can understand that things need work! Other neighbor across the road is going to do the clutch on my old "nicer" CJ5 as he actually has a garage that you can work in and on a concrete floor! Imagine the luxury! It even has heat and lights! Taxes are supposed to be done this week. I was late this year waiting on the State to send me my W2. Of course I had received it long ago and buried it under some other tax documents. Typical. So I spent a month almost waiting on a form that was already here! Too many irons in the fire.

As Robby Burns so eloquently put it, "The best laid plans o' mice and men." It was not supposed to rain until the afternoon yesterday, so of course it started at 10am. The red horse got smoked and canned, 11 1/2 pints total. I remember that my wife bought me, (us), a Buffalo Brand Air Horn for our Indian MC. The scoot was up on a lift all Winter with the battery removed, the seat, bags, and side panels off already so I got after the install. Perfect written instructions in color and well designed and thought out with plug and play wiring, and mounting using existing holes and bolts. Now when these darned deer and turkeys are in our path a blast of this 15" air powered trumpet ought to loosen some fur or feathers. Bike is ready to roll, 74 degrees promised for today, 5 to 8 inches of snow forecast for Wednesday.
