Similar to Popper's story...
in 1982, a friend's sister was driving a retired squad car on a narrow gravel/sand road in a national wildlife refuge, which is where they lived. Going about 30 mph, a buck kamikaze'd out of the woods and into the back door window, breaking it's neck...the deer was half in the car and half out of the car. The 17 yr old girl was traumatized...Her brother, their Dad, and I butchered it...well I should be honest, I just drank beer and watched...and maybe I did some silver skin removal from the small pieces to be ground into hamburger, LOL.

Oregon enacted a road kill law this year.
You notify ODF&W within 24 hrs and take them the head in , I think, 5 days.
Out of 6 deer hunters in our family we harvested 0 deer this year.
Last year we were 4 for 5.
The thought of running out of venison this year is unbearable.
I am considering cruising the local highways looking for fresh road kill.
Utah has this type of law. Not sure if the time table of the events is the same.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Well, Bret, you certainly have many desired personality traits.
I'm envious, as I've only been accused of being grumpy and anti-social.

Deal with the people I did for 20 plus years and those traits will be considered complements rather than negatives! ;)

I don't even know how many deer I've hit anymore. Last I recall it was upwards of 40. Most of them were with the Troop car at warp speed. The one time I got hurt I had the cruise set at an honest to God 55mph. Figures.

You can keep roadkill in Kansas with a permit. All accidents with Deer must be reported to law enforcement and a Trooper can issue a "Salvage Permit". I 70 from Salina to Colorado border is a big time smorgasbord, if you're hungry.

Agreed, Bret, they are all positive traits, and should be worn with pride.
Can I get a witness?

I am not in a good humor today, and my posts of the day might reflect that. I did a LOT of walking about over the past week in and around Seattle, and developed some blisters where the prosthesis and lower leg meet up. First such occurrence with this permanent unit, and I am resting the left leg to allow some heal-up to commence.

That's the good part. The other part is that I am back in the wheelchair for the day, which is unpleasing in the extreme. No war toys--no reloading--no casting--no Bear Habitat (the family's label for the garage, where most of my toys live).

Bear with me, IOW.

Been away a couple of days making a run to Detroit area to pick up a set of rechromed bumpers for the 57 Olds Super 88. After driving around Chicago and the toll ways in Indiana and around Detroit I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone can stand to live there and drive there, just awful.

I have a tang safety Ruger 77 RSI in .250. My only wish is Ruger had used a 20" barrel instead of 18", but hey what can you do? The lighter the bullet the tighter the groups. 75 grain shoots just silly good, 87 grain very good, 100 grain better than average and the 117 Hornady round nose will shoot at 2" at 100 but spreads out to just under 5" average at 200 yards. In the woods my wife and I have killed a number of deer with the 117 gr. round nose. I can just eke out 2,600 with the 117 gr. probably an over load for Model 99s but the 77 never notices. I used it last year. Frankly cannot envision a better white tail killer than the .250 or .257 R, they just plain work. Never understood the whole lady's or kid's gun nonsense. A rifle that is easy to shoot and kills quickly and humanely can serve any hunter. I just have too many choices. This year I hauled a 10# .308 worked over 700 ADL Varmint in a police take off stock up in a blind for the two hours I hunted. Too heavy, too much scope, worked perfectly, just like anything else, blow up the heart, grab the Mora.

Car kills in Wisconsin go first to the driver, if the driver passes anyone can have it and we have an 800 number now to call and receive an authorization number immediately. All legal, all good. Still thousands of dead ones on the shoulders or roads everywhere around the State except Up North where wold depredation has ruined the herd.

I've had a DL 37 yr , 25+ vehicles , I've run them from a low of 20,000 miles to a high of nearly 200,000 mostly on cars with 80-265,000 to begin with in my hands , it's safe that I've clocked a million miles personally . Knock on wood , I've not hit anything bigger than a dog , that 70+# German Shepherd was barely a nudge , and he shook it off .
Of course having typed that I now recall a doe in in beautiful westside of Wichita that had an eyeball in the windshield and did a little dance on the hood of a 78' LTD II wagon before trotting off into the creek trees .......
That summer of the great frog/toad migration ..........whoo that stench !

Lamar--all the best for your oldest daughter tomorrow.

Ian--one of the benches is a bit too tall for the wheelchair, the other is a table (used for casting and gunwork) that would be perfect. The main ambuscade is door width and steps, which complicate the ^%$# out of wheelchair mobility in this house.

I thought 1-2 days minus the leg was survivable. Oh, %^$# no--I'm probably in Facebook Jail (again.....), I was not my usual smoothly sarcastic self on a couple other sites I infest and got fanged for that. No senses of humor whatsoever--must be the approaching holidays. Marie and I will review the sitch tomorrow morning and make an assessment at that time. I know what my vote will be already.

Got tired of weighing Lee 225-55's.

"Junkyard Sendero" R700 22-250 ammo production this evening. Can't wait to hit the wall with the H4198. Gonna try Varget next. Holes in target keep getting closer and closer, whilst the speed is going up. No real stringing with this rig's groups. 10 shots hovering around 5/8-3/4" @100. EXTREMELY pleasant report, and VERY mild recoil. Haven't checked original '68 trigger but feels like its round 4#. Saving lunch money for a Calvin Elite Timney. Going to get the target'y model, still has a safety but weights down under a pound are sposed to be easily and reliably attained.

All the equipment on the bench is held on with carriage bolts comin up through the 2"+ thick yellow pine top. The nuts are 9/16". I keep an adjustable wrench in there for ? uses. Treated myself to an evilbay single wrench tonight. Got a dz "sets" in several places, just buying "singles" for the loading room on as needed basis. Hate, breaking up families( wrench and socket sets). Actually, bought a fully polished "obstruction" wrench, which is 9/16-5/8". $6.59 TYD new Craftsman.

Sitting/laying in a hospital room right now. Had my aortic valve replaced with a pig or cow valve. They did it all through my arteries, so no cracked chest or heart/lung machine. Other than my groin being sore (that's where they go in at), I'm feeling pretty good. They think they'll let me go home tomorrow - Friday.

Got back from DFW about 2-1/2 hours ago. Had to go pick up the mother-in-law at the airport. Drive there one day, stay in hotel, drive back next day. About 900 miles round trip. Worked in a trip to Costco and another market. $700+ meat and $300 in booze: single malt, rum, tequila and Grand Marnier.
Somebody asked Mrs. smokeywolf if we were throwing a party. She said, "nope, new house, new freezer, new barbecue".

Best wishes and prayers for quick recoveries to Al, Fiver and Obssd!

The boys and I boned out some neck meat off that buck last night. Guy that did the butchering said he thought someone had shot the deer in the neck with a 22. We found the hole but no bullet. Hair and dirt and no sign of infection at all. Also no bruise or bleeding around it. I'm thinking he might have run into something just after being shot. Other possibility is that he was sparring with another buck and a tine got him. It was at least 2-3" deep, so it may well have been another buck. I dunno, just an odd wound.

Tore that stupid engine out of the skid steer...AGAIN! Pulled all the shrouding off and got the suspected bad kill wires off. Continuity test shows both diodes working just fine. Great. Got looking further upstream and found a relay, which I assume grounds the system to kill the engine, and other assorted ignition wiring. Electricity isn't my strong suit. I know just enough to think I can fix things I shouldn't attempt. Spelled out the whole thing on a forum dedicated to small engines like this. Hope they can give me some ideas. It sat out during an ice storm a couple years back and the ice tore a lot of the wiring apart. I pieced it back together as best I could. I could find no diagram of my specific wiring and can't to this day. I might have done the damage myself, but it also ran fine for 2 years at least before this stuff started.

Supposed to snow all weekend and rain Mon and Tues (highs of 47 predicted) before dropping back into the teens. I still hate winter.

So sorry to learn of this, Allen. Seattle, OTOH, is an interesting city to visit: wonderful attractions, lots of good coffee, craft beer, Asian food.

California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
. . . and hypodermic needles laying on the sidewalks. At least that was the case, when we had to spend two nights there about five years ago. The ferry ride to Bainbridge Island was nice, as was the drive across it to the Olympic Peninsula and Port Townsend and Sequim.
Spent some of my misspent youth in Auburn, and seeing Mt. Rainier again was a treat.
