Hawk, I'm with you buddy. I would not have shot them either. Just not enough info. I have had a few strays here and watched them run into the neighboring hunter's land. They did not appear to be any of the neighbor dogs I know of. On the other hand, there are a couple missing from a place not too far away that I used to hear barking all the time. I was up in the woods and glassed their fenced in backyard where they used to reside and nothing.
If caught in the act of undesirable behavior, aggression, chasing, killing game, all bets are off. Until then, they get a pass.

I probably wouldn't have shot the dogs either, although I would understand those that would entirely. I have no use at all for feral cats or dogs, but I have less use for people that let their dogs run loose all the time. Dogs do what comes naturally. People are supposed to control them. Dogs are dangerous alone. Get a pack of them together and they are wolves, not dogs. It's just an unpleasant reality.

Having lots of direct experience with every bit of that, you speak the truth. I've adopted or found homes for quite a few friendly strays, dispatched packs of vicious, feral dogs, wild cats (Allen is spot on, feral dogs are a far greater menace than coyotes ever thought of being), and spent a lot of money in the process. Some of the best pets I ever had were strays. You can tell a dog's intent and demeanor pretty quickly if you offer a kind hand and unless they're totally wild or have been abused will usually respond favorably. Some are simply dangerous vermin that need to be managed like any other and your gut will tell you right quick if that's the case. Dogs of any kind that are actively threatening livestock get shot on sight, no questions asked. I love my kitties but also like my roadrunners and bunnies, so feral cats are given a few days to chum-up and or then it's trap time for a closer look and that usually leads to a dirt nap, but they are given every chance. Don't even get me started on the worthless, irresponsible two-legged curs which are nearly 100% of the stray/loose dog/cat problem.

Good fences solve a lot of problems.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
It is ALIVE!!! ;) So now I own a Massey Ferguson 65 that DOESN'T smoke so bad people call the fire company! Oil pressure is right up there where it's supposed to be, she isn't puking fluids all over the ground and everything looks copacetic. Still waiting on the elbow for the air cleaner and I'll have to order a bottom bowl for the air cleaner too. I have one hydraulic hose to replace, but outside of that it's time to stick her back together.

Yeah, .020-.021 probably would have been smart, but I set them to .018. Shouldn't take long to reset them.

Well, filling up the actual lube groove vs just above the GC produces a little,Gerber baby(cute) lube star.

Finished out the pressure testing with the H4198. 10 shot groups opened up a bit but, what was interesting is cold but fouled barrel could produce some decent 3 shot groups. Barrel heat starts to get a little up there? the more it shot.

Probably should've cleaned before going to Varget..... didn't.

Perusing 1/2 dz published data resources shows a 55g with Varget producing, and this is just a very close approximation but it kept showing up..... 32g @3200fps,34g @3400fps and so on. Several resources showed 30.5 more or less as starting loads. I went with 28 even. Got new cases today and spent quality time getting them reasonably prepped. Weighed quickly after FL size/trim and primer holes deburred. The neck thickness was easily Ghog good,so not turned. First loads show promise. Primers about where the 4198 was maybe a touch flatter.

P.O.I. required 6 clicks down and 12 clicks right from the previous. Hope to get back to shooting tomorrow and will see how "clicky" this junker scope is. Hazzard to guess, will say it's 2800fps. Recoil.... ain't,haha. And the long barrel makes it quiet, enough, to the shooter.

Reckon I just need to start eating wheaties cause, with the Harris it isn't a sporter. Weight on the bathroom scale is.....exactly 10#

H-380 does similar stuff in 22-250/55 grain spitzers--36.0 grains = 3600 FPS (+/-), 37.0 grains = 3700 FPS, 38.0 = 3800 FPS and that load weight with 55 grainers led to the Hodgdon nomenclature. I forget which gunrag scribbler laid that out, it must have been one that I don't laugh at/about if I remember it. H-380 is by some distance my favorite J-word 22-250 fuel. IMR-4064 is a distant 2nd place.

I thought it was Bruce himself that gave it the 380 name.

sneaking up on the garage/shop getting itself back in shape.
I don't have to do the move it all around in circles until it finds a home thing this time, since most of it just went back where it come from.

I bought an old flat back 110,before they made short actions, in 22-250 with half of a 20 round box of factory ammo and a 4-12 Bushnell. The guy had it sighted in with 3 or 4 rounds. Killed a cpl deer with it before his buds chastised him for owning such an ugly rifle.

This was way before the general public knew about their floating bolt head and adj headspace. Got it for 100$ and knew EXACTLY what it was. Did about 5 minutes of research in a cpl magazines and loading books. First load was just a test run, second load was 38g H380 and 52 or 53g flat based HP's set at just kissing the lands. That was it on load development,as in,done....kaput.....forgetaboutit. Call it the "horseshoe method".That old Savage loves 4895 and the Lee bullet @2800fps. But it's the skinniest pencil 24" brrl I've EVER seen. Good for carrying, not worth much at that velocity for long strings of fire. But it is nice.

Was just looking at the Varget fired cases from today,28g is really flattening the primers. I backed it down to 27.5g. I also gotta play with the "tension" and/or a smidgen of crimp. The rounds today didn't have enough and I could tell the bullets were just setting back in the cases. Got to get them engraved.... just how I like it.

Cookies?! Yum, yum!!

My favorite is oatmeal raisin with just a dash of cinnamon and walnuts, and it's a toss up as to which is better: the dough or the finished product.

So it's all been checked out? Generator runs and transfer switch is all set? Smokey is a happy camper?
Got a little busy today. A transfer valve in the Carrier heat pump gave up the ghost yesterday. We became dependent on the fireplace for our heat. HVAC folks said, 2 to 3 days to get a new one (how do I know it's not going to be 5 or 6).
Service man who showed up has a home machine shop and builds his own flintlock shotguns. Also has his own skeet range in his back yard.

Electrical contractor showed up to do the initial startup on the new generator. Generator and auto transfer switch tested out okay. Made a quick trip to town for a couple of space heaters. Given that we're looking at mostly upper 20s for the lows over the next week or more, think we'll be buying at least 2 more tomorrow.

Smokey,
You would need more than a couple space heaters here. It's -17 here now and forecast for -20 by morning, actual not wind chill, that is suppose to be -35.
I have all six dogs in the shop, 4 in the dog box on my truck, Cash in his pet porter, and Bell my 15 yo lab on her pillow. Happy campers, and have two 15 lb boxes of dog biscuits to last through this cold spell. Been making snares all day to fill orders. Tough on the wood pile, but only suppose to last a couple days. Plowed snow this morning from the 8" we just got and forecast for 3-4 more yet this week. My timber is losing value. I've been hearing the trees crack every time I take the dogs outside. This spell should make some good solid ice on the beaver ponds.
