Some things are better rented. I love having my little 743 around, even in its extremely dilapidated, band-aided condition it's there when I need it and doesn't eat the rest of the time. Renting stuff for seasonal or very occasional use is the way to go. Something you use once or twice a week or even once a month if it's a big enough job needing doing may be worth keeping on the payroll. I'm like you, Bret, can't afford to buy decent stuff so I'm stuck buying worn out machines no one else wants to fix anymore or aren't suitable for full-time duty and nursing them along. Never fails though, if I blow a hydraulic hose it's going to be on a Sunday, about five minutes into a project, when all the stores are closed.

This morning's mail included my 03 C&R FFL renewal application. The state has a C&R-purchasing flaming hoop that I haven't jumped through, yet, and my gun purchasing enabler died in February, but Brownells and some others still offer discounts, so I'll spend the $30 for the three year renewal.

"Junkyard" blasting today;

In between nodes,no biggy. That isn't what caught my eye. Normally,as of late, and not just in this rig...... have not been getting "lube stars". Maybe a tiny bit of black, sorta smudge but definitely not the classic star. Which is Jim Dandy cause there isn't that much lube on any of my varmint bullets,no ways. To the point that am alllllmost, not using any. OK,that's the back story.

Today, same 225-55RF,same H4198,same everything except .5g more powder. There was a noticeable, and VERY distinct pattern on the 11*,slick(not stepped) stainless crown. One I've never seen before, will try to describe cause like a dumbarse and the "wet paint" sign, yup had to touch it....duh. Came right off.

Small black smudge background....but in extremely fine detail were black lines emminating out from the bore. Like a touch thinner than this....l

Never seen that before? Didn't count them but they were VERY evenly spaced, and a safe assumption would be one per land.

Accuracy: even off node,it was 1 1/2" group. Primers are starting to fill out well. If I had to guess, only have about two more .5g steps and will be done. Maybe go that 1grain and sneak another .2 or .3 in.

BW, the lube is gone. Those black lines are from gas that's leaking past the bullet on the trailing edge of the engraves as it emerges from the muzzle. Your next grain....look for 3" patterns and significant bore wash toward the muzzle.

Ian,looking at the primers,am well up into some serious pressure. I may knurl the lube groove to see if it will delay expulsion.

One thing I also wanted to do once I've found the wall on this powder is; go to the highest velocity node..... then add say .2 or .3 grains....then bed the action. Play around with that. Then add another .? of powder and get it off node, then mill the bases.

O didn't know what to do.
Was at the deer lease in east Texas when these two walked into camp.
20191207_145014.jpg

Looks like pit bull snouts and maybe blue healer or some other herding dog mix. No collars. The closest house is maybe two miles away.
We're suppose to shoot coyotes and dogs on sight and i can shoot coyotes, no problem, but these two just walked into camp where me and my brother were eating eggs, bacon and biscuits and sat down like they were hoping we would feed them. Not agressive or sneaky acting, just like they were kinda lost, scared and hungry.
Looked to be well fed. Don't know where they came from.
I just can't shoot a dog. I've had big dogs before amd it nearly killed me when i lost them.
I've got a soft spot for them and couldnt shoot one unless they were charging me or eating someone I loved.
I've got some in-laws that I would tie a pork chop around their neck just to get the action started, but they weren't there today.
Anyway, my brother and I sat there and discussed what to do and the dogs just layer down about twenty yards away in the road and watched us. We both had handguns on us and it would have been an easy shot.
Texted the guy that runs the lease to see if he recognized the dogs and he said "they belong to the dirt , put them there"

I just couldn't do it.
My brother finally yelled "git" and they sure knew what that meant. They ran off like scalded cats.
I feel terrible. Didn't know what to do. I couldn't help them and I couldn't shoot them.
I'm gonna have trouble sleeping tonight.

I had a relative who used to train retrievers. He also had some healers whom he would send out in the pasture to bring in his horses. He also had his horses trained to do their business before they went in the barn. He demonstrated for me and my dad one time and one of the horses went straight to his stall. On a verbal command the horse ran outside and did his thing then went back in his stall. It was impressive. No mucking stalls!

Feral dogs are several orders of magnitude MORE DANGEROUS than any coyote. I don't like doing so, but if I see them around me they get a .224" soft point just like their song dog cousins get. Not in town, I should add--but in the woods or desert, down they go.

Watched others work all day.
Electrical contractors showed up about 830 AM to re-route my wires to my well pump from an outside panel to a panel in the shop. Also, to wire in my auto-switch for the new 22K backup generator. About 1-something in the afternoon the propane company showed up with my new 1,000 gallon propane tank. They (he) set the tank and with the help of a Ditch Witch, ran the tubing from the new tank to the generator and to and through the side of the shop wall for a future run to a propane stove, propane clothes dryer and propane water heater. 5:30 PM the propane truck showed up and filled the new tank. Tomorrow the electrical contractor comes back performs the initial startup on the generator.

man they are all over it.

that's pretty tall for a blue heeler, maybe has some german shepherd but I don't see any pitt.
the other one looks like a Pyrenees/Aussie cross.[or some Catahoula]
you might have some sheep herders in the area, they look just like the type of dogs the ones around here have.
once in a while you see something that looks like it doesn't have a questionable past, but for the most part they look like everything from a Jack Russell mix to some Saint Bernard is in there somewhere.
the ones that don't look questionable are usually part of a group of all the same type.

IMO Hawk, you did the right thing. They don't appear thin and as Fiver said or alluded to, "they look just like the type of dogs (sheep herders) around here have." Don't beat yourself up about it, and sleep well tonight.

I wouldn't have shot those dogs either. Look close at the picture and you can read their minds, they are both thinking the same thing.

Seems you have food can I be your new friend, friends share you know.

I ordered myself a Christmas Present and it arrived today.

I have a couple M18 Lith Ion Milwaukee tools, Batteries, and charger.
I've never had a small 1/4" impact driver, but have been thinking I need one. My friend has one...so you know the story, that means I gotta have one. I've looked at Harbor freight and other off brands for a cheaper alternative...but since I had the Milwaukee batteries, I started looking around at Milwaukee's 3 different offerings.

When I read about this NEW Surge hydraulic version, I just figured it was the Cat's Meow. There are several listings on fleabay (tool only, no battery or charger) for $90 to $150. Most were used, but I found a new one, in the box with Manual (for $95). I imagine I won't be able to give it a real test until Springtime, for whatever my first project might be? But I did put a battery in it today, and it feels as awesome as my Milwaukee drill. it surely looks and feels like NEW. It has 4 settings, one is specifically for self-threading screws and it's suppose to automatically sense when it needs to slow down, so you don't strip out the metal.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I probably wouldn't have shot the dogs either, although I would understand those that would entirely. I have no use at all for feral cats or dogs, but I have less use for people that let their dogs run loose all the time. Dogs do what comes naturally. People are supposed to control them. Dogs are dangerous alone. Get a pack of them together and they are wolves, not dogs. It's just an unpleasant reality.

Warm winds all night long. Don't think there's any snow left. Ice, oh yes, there will be ice, but no snow. Lots and lots of mud. It's 50F now and forecast to drop to 18 tonite. Fun!

Going to try to get the Massey 65 going. I put most of it back together yesterday. I need to get it running to do the final valve adjustment. I really don't know how you're supposed to set the valves to .018 HOT when the gas tank has to come off to get the valve cover off and the cowling all has to come off to get the gas tank off. So I'll just set the tank, warm it up and then pull it back off.

We get mountain snow blowing here, right pretty. Temps are sposed to be dropping all day with flurries starting this afternoon. Hopefully with some daylight left so me and Cocomut can go out looking for sumthin to kill.

Got more 22-250's loaded up. Hated to do it but, actually lubed the lube groove because, well it's there? Want to keep this as simple as possible.... got plenty of "tricks" but, laziness usually is the default so don't complicate anything that doesn't need it. Have distinctly NOT used the chrono, sort of don't care. Gonna push these things as hard as as the rig will take anyway? Going back to my initial plan and go straight to Varget after "pressure testing" with the 4198. Should report back later this evening. Making chicken parm for dinner.
