Taking coffee break. Movers were here at 7:30. Took off door and part of frame to get first machine out. It’s 10 now and they are about half done. Probably have all loaded by lunch. Taking lots of photos to post tonight.

you can get that choking feeling out of their throat with a cowboy boot and the proper upward angle,,, if you use good follow through.

our weather is,, well? kind of normal for here.
it dropped 8"s of snow last night/this morning, then I couldn't see past the end of the front porch for the wind and thick snow flakes.
5 minutes later?
it's done snowing and blowing.

Just dropped her auto off for rear-end body work, got a GM for temp. Dang thing turns off at stop lights. Silliness. And shows pedestrians walking on sidewalk when driving! Dash lights winking at you as you drive, little auto symbols that change color.
Looked into CVT repair a while back, nope, not for me. Friend got a Suburu with one, finally figured out how to beat the rubbber band windup in it.

We're all at lunch now. They got everything on truck! Going to meet them at new shop in half hour to start unload. Ought to be a lot easier, nice tall overhead door, wide open shop space to move around in. They are using a battery powered enerpac unit to lift up the machines to put on their rollers. Very handy. I talked to head of crew, they said they would loan us one of their older corded units to use while we level up the machines. Nice of him, we'll take him up on that. Ordered a rental dumpster, they will deliver it tomorrow afternoon to the house. After we clean out garage here they will move it to new shop.

they didn't even bother with the snow plow this time.
they just sent the road grader out.
I'd rather they didn't bother, I can drive through a few inches of snow.
I can't drive anywhere when there is 3' of snow piled up the side of my vehicles.

BTW Keith, was wondering. How long before your apprentice will be a machinist and not an apprentice?

We're done! They got all our machines moved, including a tool/cutter grinder that was stored across town in a warehouse we used to own and now rent space there. Still got a lot of stuff to move, but nothing that requires a forklift or any other major equipment. I'll post some photos later after I get a chance to download them and shrink them down. Right now I'm just going to relax a while, it's been a long day after a short night.

7am and we're trying to take off the door and cross beam over the door. The CNC mill is just inside and sticks up about 8" higher than the door.

Move1.jpg

The movers showed up and helped Scott get the door off.
move2.jpg

The cross beam had been cut away when we moved the mill in so once we took the vinyl trim off and knocked the patched areaa out we were ready to go.
move3.jpg

They got the mill up on rollers and are rolling it out,
move4.jpg

The CNC lathe went out a lot easier.
move5.jpg

Here they are jacking up the manual lathe.
move6.jpg

They used a GradeAll with forks on the end of the boom to load stuff on the truck. This is the vertical mill. The shot is thru the doorway, you can see the cutaway part of the cross beam over the door.
move7.jpg

These two shots show all the assets of our business on the back of a truck.

Tomorrow I'll take more pictures of the equipment in the new building. I took so many pictures I ran my battery down.

Outstanding Keith! Congratulations! The next question that pops into my mind is, "What are you going to do with what used to be your shop?" I'm picturing a super casting/loading room maybe? Or maybe just a place to park a car!

4L80E? Don't be skeered....

I'll have to leave that to the genuine Ian & the Ian wannabes. I'm familiar with my limitations & ability. Always willing to learn but have time & space constraints to.

For me trans usually just stop no warnings, slipping, or whatever. Usually the pump or torque converter fail, and I need the truck back quick. Takes me a year to do a motor but it's normally planned in advance.

Quite a process, Keith. I'll bet that's a load off that truck & your mind. Congratulations!

finally got the snow moved it snowed on us the whole time and dumped another 3-4"s.
me and the boy got our place done out front, then headed over to Littlegirl's place.
her neighbor had come over with his snow blower and had done most of the big parts so we just had to do the bottom and top of her driveway.
she asked what I wanted for dinner and I jokingly said crab cakes and potato cakes.
need to keep my mouth shut, crab ain't cheap around here.
it took us about 3 hours to cook and break and pick out the crab and prepare everything e;se, but dang it was good.
I come home and got the back yard shoveled out good enough for 8:30 pm.
I'm sure I will feel it tomorrow.

Ice, ice, ice! Went and got the new/used 'Burb, got home and then on to the Town Board Meeting. After that debacle ( New supervisor, New Highway Super, new Board member) I walked out into the parking lot to a misting rain. Made it home at 15-20mph as the heater wasn't keeping the little peeky holes in the ice clear enough to really see well out of. Glad it's only a few miles. It must have misted down more overnight 'cuz it's just nasty out there this AM. Supposed to start getting a bit of snow today and tomorrow, clear Fri and then up to 8" Sat. Naturally SWMBO and oldest girl have to drive to Burlington Vt for surgery tomorrow. Won't be home till Sat or Sun. Gotta love winter weather.

My exerience with trannys going seems to always follow the same path- it starts to shift "funny", it's starts to slip a bit, then it starts to shudder, then it dies. Usually I'm in the mix somewhere checking fluid, talking to my mechanic, adding some additives, hoping it heals itself. It usually takes 6 weeks to 6 months for them to die for me. What really steams me is when you try to keep up on the service and find out you can't do a fluid and filter change! That probably makes sense to the Corp but not to the consumer.

I've had full size GM vans, since 1977...............buy them new, staggering them every 5-6 years...........till I retired in 2008. That's why I have two at a time. Always optioned with 3/4 ton with biggest V-8 that was offered. Currently, have a 2004 & 2010 model, both have the 6.0 liter engine. I don't know what the transmission designation number is. Four speed automatic with overdrive. Can't complain about gas mileage............10-13 mpg in the city.

Never had any transmission issues, except when GM first came out with the overdrive tranny........1985, IIRC. There were issues and articles in the newspaper making accusations. After 38,000 miles, my 1985 G-van was out of warranty...................but GM dealership replaced the trans, free of charge.

I don't tow and replace the transmission fluid and filter at @ 50,000 miles. Never had any major engine issues. Had several 350 cu in/ 5.7 L engines, 400, 454 and two 6.0 L engines. The 400 cubic inch was my favorite..............good gas mileage like the 350 with significantly more power. No experience with the 5.3 L V-8....................don't recall if it was even offered in the full size van line.

Years ago had a Taurus, taking daughters wedding dress to her. Right at 50K (ok, maybe 10 mi off) tranny quits at Pflugerville. Like QUITS. Coast off I45. Replaced with Ford rebuilt, not right. Do it again. Lasts 6 mo. IIRC, 6 trannies till one that worked. Re-builds from Mexico, French tranny. I removed, got one re-built for son's K5. Nope - let them take it out and re-build again (Austin shop). You know how much a 83 transfer case weighs? Yes, SIL and I pulled whole shebang with scissor jacks in his driveway. Lasted another 6 mo. Get another re-build and DUMP the K5. Oh, the K car trannys stacked on the shelves at the trans repair Co.
I do remember the hydromatic we got to take apart/put together (and the Buick dynaflow) in HS shop class. Understanding HOW they worked wasn't difficult, actually working on one was. Fixing the sychro & bearings in MGA wasn't bad

Only tranny problems I've ever had was with GM's 700R. Put 4 of them in the Chevy PU and got rid of the truck for a Ford 3/4 HD.

Was the same Chevy truck that I jerked the Chevy diesel out of and put in a 350. Couldn't get rid of that diesel engine, couldn't sell it, tried giving it to shops for parts, nobody would take it. Finally ended up taking it to the scrap metal yard and selling a running engine as scrap iron. Felt sorry for the scrap yard, at the going rate for scrap iron the got took.
