rolled out of the pickup door in the nicely sheltered lower section of the draw at 0630 and 16-f then started climbing.
about the time the trees thinned out to almost none, the mountain stopped, and so did I.

someone had come through the secondary trail and cut out about 200 trees that had fallen over the 4 wheeler trail making the walk some easier than expected.
[we found that out after taking the primary road then cutting over the ridge to the secondary when the first dead ended]
seen one decent deer for about how long it takes to lift a rifle and get the scope in place then slip down a slope 3 foot while watching it bounce off... laughing.
[at least the guys on the 4 wheelers didn't see it happen]
made it back down to the truck around 1 PM knackered out.

neighbor stopped by and offered me a very lightly used Taurus 357.
7 shot, ported [4-5/8"?] barrel, with ADJUSTABLE SIGHTS, and that weird flexy rubber grip they put on them,, for 500$.
I kinda think anything other than a Taurus [or another 357] and I mighta went for it.
I dunno maybe a decent deal?

Though dated, I hope it helps.

13th ed. lists same. Can't find my 14th at the moment.

Are you hunting Mulies or Whitetails? Bucks only, antler restrictions?

Set my alarm for 4:30 so I could be out early for opening day. Just woke up at 5:31am. I had set the alarm for 4:30pm :headbang:.

The area I’m hunting only has blacktail, the regulations say “any buck”, so spike or better.

Maybe the day will get better.

It'll get better, I've shot more darn deer between 9 am and just after 12 noon than at first light. Good luck!

Josh,
You'd'a been up exactly on time, if you had used a windup clock.;)

Just think, in a few weeks we'll be re-setting our clocks.
And, if you have a digital watch, you may have to refer to its instruction manual.

my clocks get re-set sometime in mid November if I remember.

Mule Deer.
1 buck per customer, per year.[if your a resident]
some sections up north they have to choose a mule deer or white tail tag

this has been the oddest year already, but even the deer thing is weirder.
I was watching them migrate off the mountains in late august and early september.
[the dove migration was early too]
they are already starting to transition off the easy green food to their winter type browse,
but they aren't beginning to herd up just yet, so I'm seeing a lot of doe/fawn or 2 doe/2-3 fawn type combinations.
the weather is just cold, no snow, not really hot.

I ain't run into a single person on foot in any of the drainages I have walked back into, not one single person walking..... anywhere.

I'm not even gonna get started on the F&G increasing the out of state permit numbers and decreasing the over the counter costs for an OOS tag [which is also a black bear tag, plus they can buy a second tag]
bad enough the last couple of winters put the deer numbers down pretty hard but then we gotta add to the decrease in already badly skewed buck-doe ratio's by putting more people in the field.

All my clocks reset themselves. Except for the stove and microwave. The rest are atomic. So as long as I stay out of the kitchen for a year I will be Ok. Lol

Well got to put the new alternator. And fix a slow leak in the Malibu tire.
Then we will throw the for sale signs back on it and drive it everywhere till some one
bites.

No money for a good new cross bow, or a good blind_ stand. So I have decided to not deer hunt this year. Concentrating on squirrel, and will be going out rabbit season. Just had a half a deer gave to me for helping a fellow gut, hang one last night. Then this morning, after work, skin and prosses it .He had $bucks$ worth of equipment an no Idea how to use it. So I am good with that.

Wet and cold! Eating lunch on top of a hill that has good cell service. Haven’t seen any of our local costal grey ghosts. Probably gonna read some, glass some, and then call it a day. Hearing lots of single gunshots off in the distance.

The deck crew just left. Beams level-level-leveled and joists joisted and blocked. It's a real treat to watch a pro do in a minute what would take me too many hours to accomplish.
Deck boards are to be delivered next week, then get laid Saturday.
Next up will be replacing an 8'X56' fence.
Sometime after that, a 6'X80' fence comes down and a 7'X80' goes up.

Don't suppose I can complain too much, as I built the 56-footer about '83 and the 80-footer about '86.

I built my own deck here about 7 years ago. Pressure treated 2x6 frame on 12 inch centers sitting on solid concrete columns, composite decking. All done with deck screws, not a nail in it. Not a soft spot or squeak in it yet and it's still perfectly level. Pressure wash it about twice a year and it's as good as the day I built it. Good thing I built it when I did. knees and hips today would never allow me to be down on the knees now.

Seven-years-ago, would have been a much different story. Reality is, my mind quit aging 40 to 50-years ago, but my body didn't. Nothing physical debilitating, just the natural muscle loss, and a knee that has a slight case of Arthur.

Great job Jeff!
Makes my day hearing about someone giving a youngster a chance at something exciting.
Kids need all the help we can give them.

Found a half emptied box of small rifle magnum primers??? I have never loaded up any magnum rifle stuff. Figure I must have got them at an auction in a msc box and forgot.
Well they are going to the range tomorrow with me in some .38 special round. Gave me something to do tonight, and figure may as well use the primers for something.

1 more day one more draw circled.
got my second sage grouse.

seen a white tail doe she come haulin butt down off a mountain about 15 minutes before dark, cut through the sagebrush then come to a halt about 50yds away from me standing broadside.
I just sat there with my mouth open.
didn't even know what to think about that, the nearest group of white tails I know of are over in Wyoming and live down in a river bottom.
[maybe 80 miles away]

the sage grouse I got had to be with the dumbest group of birds ever.
first they walk right in front of the truck on a little 2 track road that's blowing dust up so thick I almost can't see where I'm going.
then they wander over to an open piece of ground about 15 foot away and pluck at the ground there.
I stop and get out after the wind blows the dust away [radio's playing some steve aoki at about 90 decibels] open the back door to grab the shotgun and a can of soda falls out and explodes everywhere.
I kick the spraying can of soda away from me right over by them, tripping on some sagebrush in the process and almost falling on my ass.
I move Littlegirl's rifle out of the way then unwrap my waist pack from around the shotgun, load it and walk over to them, they decide to finally fly when I'm maybe 15 yds away.

the SIL was with me and when I got back in the truck he sits there for a second and finally goes.
jeez you could have at least gave them a chance [with almost a straight face]

The wife and I did a road trip to Brainerd, Mn. yesterday to get some warranty work done on her Highlander. On the way back in Deerwood, Mn. she wants to stop at a secondhand store, I wait in the car. They have the town all tore up, hoe, couple skid steers and a paver going, so lots to watch. The wife texts me asks if I need any wads. What kind, how much. Priced $1.98 bag, some one donated to the shop with proceeds going to the local Lutheran church. I'm impressed she knew what they were, so I went in and bought them all for $10.62. Few missing out of both bags of the Verelites, but the AA's and Rems all unopened.
