Spring cleaning, stuff you can have (for the postage!)

Been thinking .
I'll withdraw my request , too many irons not enough fire to go around .
I also rediscovered about 2' of 1×3 6061 T6 that I'd misplaced at the last rework .

Thanks for the offer but I'll pass right now Keith. It is really a design flaw in the new roller fairlead. Warn went from a metal shoulder bushing in each end of the rollers, to a nylon replacement. The e-clips were also of poor quality and started the failure process. My first fairlead last over 15 years, the second 10 minutes. If that's the best they can do I'll just make one. Just need to decide how large I want to go with the ID of the rollers first. One inch would probably work fine if they are hard enough, the roller face really doesn't matter if it doesn't bend/collapse when put under load. Winches and snatch blocks, with poor quality, soft material just don't cut it when you put them to work.

Just wanted to update this. Yes, I will get the scrap packed and shipped real soon. My apprentice took a week off for a golf vacation. I had an eye injection last Thursday that screwed up my vision and required me to keep chips and coolant splash out of it. Didn't want to take a chance getting dust in it from cleaning out the scrap boxes. But the apprentice is back and I'm pretty much OK now so things are getting back to normal and this task is one of the next things on the list.

Please don't send any money until I get things to ya. I don't need any money to pay postage, we can all settle up later.

An eye injection? Yikes, not an appealing thing.
Take care of those eyes Keith!

And the apprentice has time for golf? He must not be working hard enough.

Yikes, he did say an eye injection, I think that would be even worse than an infection which is how I first read it.

With diabetes you get weak little capillaries on the retina that sometimes rupture and leak blood into the vitreous fluid. Clouds the vision. I have had laser treatment on both eyes which stops the progression but damages the retina slightly. My doctor thinks the injections will shrink the capillaries enough to prevent further bleeding, so I've got 11 more, once a month for the next 11 months. It hurts, it keeps me from doing much of anything for two-three days, and there is always the risk of infection. Add in the blood thinners I take and the first shot left my eye with a bloody red spot bigger than a pea right next to the pupil in the white of the eye.

+1 to what Ian said.

Wish you the best, Keith. If you can deal with it mentally you got it half beat. Having lost some of your parts and gritted your way back to some semblance of normalcy, you know all about that. Something about having a 25-gauge needle poked through one's eyeball on a regular basis with no sedation and only topical anesthesia is uniquely traumatizing.

Bet that needle coming at the eye gets pretty large.

I can't imagine

OK Ian, Brad, Pistolero, and Ricinyakima. I've got four medium flat rate boxes packed up with what you asked for plus all the other goodies I could put in. There are instructions on where and how to pay for the shipping (the only charge). If you ordered some of my regular products I will ship those separately. I did not want to take the chance that the box of scrap might get damaged or lost.

I think one of you asked for a large flat rate box of stuff but honestly even a medium box not even packed full of mostly steel scrap is about all I can handle. And I'm betting that's about all the weight the postal workers can safely handle also. Even so I'll mark them with "HEAVY" in bright lettering.

I'll run them by the PO tomorrow.

Thank you, sir. One man't trash is another man's treasure!

Not meaning to look a gift horse in the mouth, but any hints on alloys would
be helpful. If you don't remember, still a wonderful thing to let us have it.

The Al plates are 6061. The majority of the steel tubing and round stock is 1018. There are a few pieces of black Delrin (acetal), some chunks of white HDPE, some 6061 Al rods, and possibly one or two pieces of odd stock that might be 1144 "Stress Proof" steel. No tool steel, doubt there is any 4140 or other alloy steel. Everything is machinable and weldable except the 1144.

After you guys get the boxes if there is anything in particular you want more of let me know. Most of the stuff is scrap we generate from repetitive jobs, meaning we will probably make more of it in the future. I'll be glad to reserve it for you.

Ok, thanks. I like to mark my stock and avoid doing something dumb like making a
special punch and "heat treating" it, when it is 1018.....pretty disgusting when it folds up
like play doh at the first hit. Ask me how I know this.:embarrassed:

For a whole lot, 1018 is just great. Just don't confuse it with 4140 or even 1040 when you need
a really strong item.

Oh boy , Delrin. Great stuff for certain applications. Never worked with HDPE. Is it
good enough for a soft hammer head?

Very helpful info.
