Stopped to get 1 1/2 dozen donuts for a meeting today. Girl at register said they can only to 6 or 12……..
Want to have some real fun?

First, pay cash for something at your favorite store.
That in and of itself starts screwing with their head.
Say the bill is $14.48
Hand 'em a twenty and let them enter it in the register.
At the last second give 'em the three pennies.
Sit back and enjoy watching their brain melt down.

I used to give the odds cents without causing the cashiers' heads to explode too often. Then, one day, the cashier took the odd cents, gave me the change the resister displayed and returned the odd cents. Lesson learned: it's progressed to beyond hopeless.

Had that same thing exactly happen a few times, finally gave up too. Most tills today don't contain change for a 20 anyhow.

Interesting little tidbit: most cash register closings & reconciliations do not involve dollar totals. You count (in order) the number of each bill denomination, then the number of each coin denomination. This must reconcile before the next step. When the manager prepares the bank deposit the program tells them how many of each denomination bill and coin to deposit, and tells them what the total will be. No 'rithmatick involved beyond the piece count. Want real excitement at the checkout? Most teenyboppers have never seen one dollar coins, or two dollar bills. I remember reading a thread somewhere about a guy who stopped at Taco Bell in a strip mall one day and only had a couple of fiftys, and a pocketful of change that included three Susan B Anthony one dollar coins. The Store Manager threatened to call the Police on him for passing fake money. They wouldn't accept the fifties because of the denomination.

Still, misteaks are abundant:rofl:

A "twenty" seems to have become the most common denomination, with ATMs issuing no smaller bills. Getting ready for a gun show means a trip to the bank, because everyone who buys a $2 used ammo box or a $5 scope base whips out a twenty on you.

I like young people, but make it a point to find a register with an old person. It's just easier. Sometimes, I'll get "cash back" so I have lunch money for the week - usually a "twenty." The older checkers always ask if you want that broken down. Once I said, "yeah, a ten, a five and ten ones."

This yielded a wry smirk from the mid-sixties cashier and she said "nice try." The response was reflexive and quick - she did not have to think about it for even a second.

I did encounter a sharp kid the other day, going through a drive-through (which I hate doing) when I bypassed the first window and she leaned out the window and yelled "BACK HERE!" They NEVER have that window open. I backed up and paid her and told her I didn't expect to get my food for free. She smiled and said "wrong day anyway - we only have free food on the second Tuesday of each week." I had to tell that girl I was proud of her for being so quick with a corny old-people joke.

I’ve gotten to the point where I use my credit card for drive thru food purchases. Cuts out a lot of fumbling, dropped coins, making change, etc. It’s just easier.

Use a CC for to much and some slime ball is going on vacation and you have a big headache.
Yep. It's been some years ago, now, but my bank cooperated fully, credited my account the $2500 my debit card said I spent at Tokyo's Disneyland hotel, and issued another debit card. At the time, it'd been nearing 50-years since I last stepped foot in Japan, and that was on a refueling stopover, from Seattle to Cam Rahn Bay Air Base.

My retirement side job pays cash and it is used for many local purchases. Still, the debit card has to be used for others, and on-line stuff.

I did once have an issue with a $35.00 restaurant tab. I gave our server my debit card for the bill and that fine example of generations of selective inbreeding charged $3500.00 to the account. That led to an adventure because there wasn't that much in the account and he just kept trying to add more to it on top of all that, thinking he was reversing the charges. My bank locked down the account after repeated hits from the same machine.

There was no one in the place who could figure out how to fix it, and it was Saturday night so I went without access to my checking account until Monday. This was one of those "managers, train your people adequately" situations and I expressed my displeasure to the General Manager on Monday. He offered gift cards for my inconvenience, which I declined. We never went back there again. Up to that point, we had been regulars.

Luckily I have not had an issue for years now. The only one I had was I made a telephone order to SARCO before there was internet. The nice NJ girl took the information and I got my gun parts. The next month I got a bill for over $400 in phone calls to Italy. Credit Union refunded my account.

I never use debit cards because my CU does not have a stop loss, they can clean out your entire account the card is on. PayPal and credit cards are pretty safe if you use secure encrypted internet.

Your mileage will vary depending upon your state laws and banking/CU rules.

my debit card account is separate from my checking account, as in separated by a few blocks.
it generally only has a few bucks in it till i re-fill it.
if someone empties it i'm out maybe 2-300 dollars, or more like 30 at the end of the month.

I have to carry the debit card, as ATM's will only accept it rather than a credit card. Hate the banking laws in WA.
