What Did You Shoot Today?

Local reloader are like hens teeth, though there are two that I've been meaning to ask, it just a matter of being at the range the same time they are, which is rarely. As to Powder Valley: if it weren't for them I'd have to learn how to grow roses for a hobby.

I shot a great Dane and 2 beagles . There ain't much left with a single stroke Beeman .177 past 25-30 yd but a Dane will cover about 15' per bound when bit in hip . :)

I've never cared for the hound sounds but it is pretty amusing when 1 just stands there while the other 1 is running like it's riding a JATO bottle .

I Probably have to remind the Dane about once a month his home isn't here the beagles only come around about once a quarter . They don't get a chance to bother the birds but don't seem to have an inclination to either . Id hate to injure someones pet so running lessons will do for now .

Based on the fragile nature of a coyote I imagine a 85-140 gr sub would wreck the engine room enough for a dirt nap . That is ok here so ......

The county I live in, Yakima, is about the size of the state of CN. Outside of incorporated towns and cities it is "Range". You don't want livestock on your property, you have to fence them out. Any dogs chasing stock are shot on sight. That really really makes me sad, as I am a great dog lover. However, if their owners will not control them, they are at the stockman's mercy.

the neighbor used to have this big giant butt hole of a Bull that liked to wander over from time to time.
he pretty much ignored the cow dog i had and wandered through they yard ripping mirrors off the cars knocking down fence posts and such.
it only took one well aimed shot from directly behind him with a flat pointed pellet to get his attention.
well,,, get his attention and turn him into a rodeo bull for about 1/4 mile.
that same thing worked on the neighbors big Lab when he come courting, he made it aallll the way home before turning his attention to checking things out....LOL

This air rifle is tired I'm not one to shoot important places , I'm more about giving them running lessons . At about at 25 yd a collared dove is in trouble if I poke it in the eye . An average dog at 50 yd is not at much of a risk past really surprised .

Maybe if I bought a reseal kit and did it ..... 4.5 gr isn't much weight I'd be Surprised if they're leaving much over 400 fps .

I COULD'A shot 3 geese with 3 rnds as they flew over the driveway at about 30 yds overhead low/slow - IF I had had the duck gun! And then watched 3 more flights go over the neighborhood! (Did confirm they did NOT land in the winter wheat field out back!).

Ended the most-hoot-to-shoot .45-70 Pedersoli/Navy Arms Buffalo Rifle rolling block's accuracy load search. Lyman's 405-grain 457193 and 15.7-grains of Unique. A close second was 20.0-grains of 2400. Both loads have been shot several times, but I need a rainy day project of loading a supply, thus the shoot-off.

Tested five or six powders and am not amazed that Unique beat them all, nor that 2400 placed so well.

Every time I look through the Vernier sight's eyepiece it looks like its full of lint. Nope, have to remind myself those are my eyeball's spider webs that are distorting and covering a goodly portion of a 100-yard 12" fluorescent green target. Never mind the floaters . . .

Having shot 5-6 different bullets in the 1895 I'm not the least bit that the 4577193 is the winner .

Oh, the 457193 beat out two other bullets a long time ago.

I picked up a nice 457193 recently, I'm taking notes. Wanting to shoot the 45/90 again but am done with 40-something grains of 3031 and 535-grain bullets.

In an ancient Ideal manual (38th?) the maximum Unique load was 16.0-grains. Though the Pedersoli is factory rated to 29,000 PSI, I don't venture into Marlin/1886 data. For strictly target work, I don't see any reason to overwork the gun and the shoulder. The Unique/15.7 makes an 11-pound rifle an all day shooter.

458-201 Rapine , 456-25? Lee (the ROA bullet) , 458-340 Lee , 462-420 MP , 457193 , 457132 NOE version , Lee 458-405 , a Herters 405 RN , are those that I've shot . I have a 45-500 FP @530 gr loaded but waiting and the "gifted" Lee 5R .....

I forgot about the 454618(?) Minie' that I paper patched and the 453-350 RNFP Mountain too .

I shot them for the most part from middle TD to 75% of 86' and 1895 Data , the 457193 was the most flexible for powder and alloy manipulation of any of them .

Probably not news to you ...... The cursory look at it suggests That there's a hump or bend at the pins . I don't know what I'll do with that yet . Lots of ideas , most of them from the good idea fairy and we know how that works out .

For the 45-70(s), I started with the Lee 405 HB and 38.5 gr IMR-3031 (Water's TD Pet load). Zero load workup. All I have shot in the Marlin 1895 and hunt deer with it (center shoulder shots). Stayed with it in the custom RB as well. Not shot that one past 25 yds - YET. But expect it will do well. I DO have the RD 300 and 350s, but.... MIGHT try the 350 in the 1895 for deer.

The standard target load for the 457193 in the Trapdoor is 24.0 grains of A2400 up to 200 yards and add two grains for 300 yards. Something close should work for the 45/90.
