What is your weather today?

After a couple days of fighting over the phone with idiot medical clerks on all ends of this anemia mess, Marie and I left for a day trip to the desert this morning. I can't do much, but I can sit and ride in a Jeep, so that's what we did--out to Joshua Tree National Park(ing Lot). Oh, yes--the turistas have arrived in numbers now that the temps have moderated a bit. It was really lovely today, 80*-82* mid-day through JTNP on our drive-through. We stopped here and there, and a litany of many languages were audible in the parking areas.

3 hours at JTNP, exiting the south/Cottonwood Road route. This transitions into Box Canyon Road, the old U.S. 60 between Chiriaco Summit and Mecca. Plenty of daylight left, so we went south along SR 111/Salton Sea's east shore to Bombay Beach, which remains a preposterous art colony/Road Warrior post-apocalyptic leftover from the Salton Sea's great days as a recreation site. Must be seen to be believed, that is all.

From there we went on to the Wister Unit Cal-DFW waterfowl hunting/birding preserve, and MY GOODNESS have the teal arrived! Cinnamon and greenwings in good numbers loafing on the ponds, about 250 lifted off when Marie got out of the Jeep for a photo attempt. This was 75 yards or more from the road, so those birds are schooled and ready for business. It was great seeing all of those birds! Cloudy and gloomy as we left, looked like rain in Baja California and around Palo Verde and Yuma.

Dusk was upon us, so we headed homeward and landed about 2 hours ago. A great day, but I am worn out.

Well, well. Cal-Trans has put out that 3 of the taller & smaller trans-Sierra highway crossings will be closed in anticipation of SNOW Thursday evening through the weekend. These are Monitor Pass, Sonora Pass, and Tioga Pass. BRING IT, say I.

Closer to home, rain is forecast to start tonight at 9 P.M. and continue into tomorrow afternoon. Local snow levels aren't shown, drat the luck. Tracking snow on the ground in some of my deer areas would be GRAND for Saturday's opener, but getting out remains problematic. The meds are set to arrive before noon tomorrow. 4 weeks+. Expletives deleted.

Kinda wild weather the last few days. Windy and cool yesterday, clouds boiled up around dusk and we got rain and hail for about 45 minutes. Melissa was out exercising, and came home thoroughly dampened and none-too-impressed with the sudden weather onset. The winds really gusted up overnight, and the clouds cleared out by sun-up today. 42* at 6 A.M., about a 15* drop in a day's time.

It's still breezy off-and-on, a pretty day with zero smog/smoke/haze. 69* right now, and that is as high as it will get (given time of day). What passes for autumn hereabouts seems to have arrived.

We've had storms and fronts swapping back and forth warm dry air for low-pressure steam for over a week now. It never has cooled off. Typical schizophrenic Texas October.

Daytime temperatures are staying below freezing now, in the 20’s and teens at night, still nice.
northern lights were out last night for first time.

Wow, that didn't take long. Seems like only a couple weeks ago you mentioned Jack Frost was coming to town soon.

When you are that far north, and have 10 minutes less sun every day, it gets cold quick! Here at 48* north, it is 5 minutes and fall comes quickly.

I've been to Renton a few times (briefly, delivering emergency airplane parts to the line to fix somebody's screw up), but never spent more than 24 hours north of Colorado.

My favorite story is that my brother and sister-in-law went to all the state capitols and had their picture taken in front of the building. We went with them to Helena, MT, on the first day of summer, June 22. We awoke in the morning to four inches of fresh snow.

First part of June here usually brings us our first triple-digits temperatures. How about early next summer you skip the photos and just send me a full truckload of that frozen stuff? On second thought, that wouldn't work either because it would be warm water by the time the truck got last Lubbock.

Daytime temps in the Low Desert (Palm Springs/Palm Desert) have slid into the high 70s and low 80s for almost a week, so the locals are getting their layered clothing out of the mothballed closets and chests.

Monday and Tuesday were gorgeous Fall days. The spiders were riding their silks in the light air, the damned Lady Beetles and Box Elder bugs were flying in droves all trying to get into my house and out buildings. Yesterday was still nice enough for a late afternoon MC ride, but you could feel the change coming. As we drove out of the last slanting rays of the sun going behind a wall of clouds the temp dropped to 65 and gloves and a jacket were appreciated. We put on 58 miles and acknowledged it may be the last ride for the season.

Woke up at 1:15am briefly and it was still 55, I opened a window. A while later I was awoken by the wind chimes and I could hear wind in the trees. Got up at quarter after 5 and it was 49 and falling. Went out to feed the birds and there is a heavy mist blowing on a light westerly wind. Wish I was in a duck blind. It's 6:30 now and darker'n the inside of a coal sack outside yet.

Perfect bow hunting weather in the mornings. Lows have been in the low 50's to mid 40's. Afternoon highs in the low to mid 70's................I don't hunt in the evenings. Besides the warm temps, not going to deal with night time tracking anymore.

It's currently, 44 degrees with hardly any wind (NW @ 0-1 mph). Will be heading out the back door, in less than one hour. Looking for an 8 point or better. Yesterday, took video of a four point. Muzzle loading started last Saturday and ends this Sunday..............I didn't bother loading one.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Wind, rain, temps in the mid 40's here. Dawn is still 45 mins away at 6:45AM. Nice day for duck hunting. Supposed to be working outside all day!
