Right before I went to bed I stepped outside to sniff the air. It was still 64 degrees. It had rained a little and was starting to sprinkle again. Sue stepped out and said it smelled like more rain to her. I looked down and as I had a hand held spotlight to check the bird feeder for critters and the deer carcass across the road, I saw the lawn was alive with night crawlers.
I went out to the shed and quickly mixed up a batch of worm bedding and picked at least 4 dozen crawlers in a few minutes. Later in bed I awoke to a down pour. I assume the crawlers could sense its approach and were out mating and moving around before the storm. Peepers were active before the big rain too. Only problem is the cold and crappy weather is going to return just in time for when I want to go back out to fish. I hate, just hate it when nice weather on a weekend brings hoards of people out. The boat ramps are full, there's no parking spaces, and it just is in no way relaxing.
On our bike ride we checked the Mississippi and it is still flooded and looks like a lost cause for the remainder of the time I would normally be handlining. I'm feeling a grumpy day comin' on, ingrate that I am. I did make fresh cherry scones for breakfast and the COFFEE is good.
