Savage Model 99

I'm a little nervous about poking holes in the front receiver ring. Looked at Skinner already, didn't see much that will fit the tang. Their brass is HARD, not much chance I could bend a curve in it. Something that would be kind of neat is the Lyman #21, I might actually be able to make or modify an existing Winchester model to work. I'm not in love with it, but it would sure facilitate quick changes between bunny loads and deer loads. Keep the ideas coming, because after a little searching last night and this morning I'm coming up pretty empty on sights that will fit the rear receiver ring and mount on the tang.

This rifle has no cocking indicator on the tang and the safety is on the trigger guard, so all that is on the tang is two screw holes for the original Savage, Marbles, or Lyman folding peep sights.

you might be able to modify a 94 AE sight enough to match the rear.
they bolt on with 2 screws across from each other instead of inline.
I don't have a 99 here to try anything or I could maybe give some better ideas.

you could steal the quarter rib idea from the ruger NO-1 maybe?
or something like NOE makes for the 92's.
or cut a couple of dovetails [with set screws in the center to lock everything down] in the barrel and extend a rib back and over the frame?

you could use an older ramped Williams sight or a copy for the front, then you could make dovetailed inserts to see over a silencer.

Have no ideas on sights.

At cabelas this eve they had one in 300 savage with some nasty colored but nice wood marked at 699 & came with a scope mounted. The blonde 308 a couple weeks ago was offered at 550. Seems like they will keep going up with time.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Honestly, if you want a specific sight, then start watching Ebay. I know it's full of garbage, but eventually everything you want pops up there. Took me over 15 years to finally find a Rem #4 barrel for the solid action for a project. Just won it a couple days ago.

Option 1 is an old Redfield which requires DT the side of the receiver. A last resort for me.
Option 2 is a used Williams peep for the post WWII tang safety rifles and mounts via the factory rear scope base holes in front of the tang. Williams still makes this sight new for less than the ebay seller wanted, but it will not fit my 1908 rifle.
Option 3 is also an old Redfield, but appears in better shape with a target aperture/cup. Tidy, but the tang already is drilled and tapped for a sight and I'd prefer to use the existing holes.

What I'll likely do if I use a tang sight at all is make a gracefully ramped base, acquire some Smith & Wesson rear sight parts from a Model 29 or similar, adapt them to the base, and make an aperture from scratch. The biggest challenge will probably be cutting a compound, concave curve in steel to match the receiver tang.

or make a base and use a firesight. [I think that's what they were called]
they were like a rear peep sight but with a large center hole and were meant for pistols.
you only had left right adjustment and used different front sight heights for the up/down.
I shot one of Ken's guns that had a set installed and it was more effective than I thought they would be.

Here is what I think is a Williams that I took off my 99. It mounts on the tang. My rifle is the same vintage as yours. It is yours if you are interested.

That's nice! I looked for one of them or something similar many years back, couldn't find one. Ended up with a Redfield like in Bills Ebay link #1.

That must be the older, now discontinued, Williams receiver sight.

Does it mount to the tang screws here? If it does I'd be VERY happy to have it.

I took the sight off my trigger safety 99. The hole spacing and contour are for mounting on the tang.

PM me your address so I can get it shipped Tuesday.

Price including shipping is --- Merry Christmas!

it sure looks like it does.
you might have to do some screw manipulations but if it even remotely fits the profile of the receiver I'd be all over that.

Heck yes, I'll take it! Thank you very much, Barn.

Do you want the plug screws off of mine? They aren't perfect, but they're original to the gun AFAIK.

What a deal for both of you! Double Merry Christmas. Screw holes filled, junk box emptied on
one end, and a sight miracle on the other end.
Cool.
Barn is a generous person.

I had one much like yours. Sewer pipe barrel, but no but stock. Looked for a long time for a barrel. The early savages had square threads so later made barrels were not an option.

Found one in 30-30 with square threads for a different model but was factory marked 30-30 and had the sight base on the outboard end . Long story short after turning the tang

end the correct length and adding the additional threads it screwed into the action just right . Of course cutting the extractor cut and the right hand bolt seat was needed.

I shoot cast and jacket thru it but not hot rodded and it works fine with barrel mounted open sights..

I just recently bought a 250-3000 that the serial number places it as a 1918 vintage. I dont hot rod it either.
