Went to the deer lease today to bring back a deer feeder that needs a new barrel.
Took two AR-15s and a couple of 9mms to shoot while I was there.
It's amazing how quickly a barrel heats up and stays hot when it's 102 degrees.

No pain. Tiny bit of soreness sometimes but that's it. It's the immediate and lasting sensation of being strangled while trying to choke down a marshmallow that bothers me for days when I strain whatever it is. It doesn't seem to be causing any major problems so I'm just going to keep on working and eventually it will normalize. Main thing is I'm getting over this mess and returning to a normal life/diet/activities with minimal permanent damage and the tumor is history.

BTW, Popper's war wound is impressive! Had to be to rate staples

Checked and lubed some Lee 312-185s, for the '81 Argentine, and loaded a box of 6.5 Swede with 140-grain jacketed and IMR 4350.

Still in the thinking ahead mode, and noticed 6.5 mm and .30 caliber gas checks are almost at the re-order point. Also, I need to get a check mailed to Glenn, at While Label Lube, thinking a pound of BAC ought to last a while.

Hawk, that barrel heat is a real buggar with full-power cast bullet loads too. Three shots in as many minutes from my '06 and the medium sporter barrel (and suppressor) are too hot to hold. Keep shooting too fast and soon leading begins and groups go to patterns.

I took a new toy out tonight to see how it shot. I can no longer shoot a compound bow because of physical problems. AND I REALLY MISS BOW HUNTING. So after about 7 years of only rifle hunting. I decided to jump back into bow hunting with a crossbow.
I started shooting at 5 yards to make sure i didn't loose any arrows and make sure the scope was close to being sighted in. I progresavly went to 30 yards while only shooting 50 arrows. No 5 shot group was over 2", an i already have lost 1 knock from being hit by another arrow.
I AM BACK INTO BOW HUNTING!!!!!!! Whoopy.

I'm back at it, yes. Monday was the first day I didn't think about me neck one time all day until nearly bedtime. Tuesday was good until I lifted that head off and I've been puffy/swollen ever since and keep swallowing involuntarily because it feels like a large marshmallow is lodged in my throat. Same thing happened over a week ago when I strained it picking up something heavy.

gettin' broke up/cut/repaired SUCKS! And you feel it more and more EVERY damned day and every task you undertake! Wishing you the VERY BEST!

Kevin - feel your pain. Tried for ~40 years to harvest a deer with a bow. no go. Finally, last year, found a CB that didn't scare the snot out of me - AND got a mis-priced/1/2 price on one with a hand crank. and promptly took it out and scored my first ever (cross)bow deer of my life! Extremely happy - even if it IS a CB!

There is nothing like the feel of accomplishment when bow hunting.
An congrats for having the determination for that long. An not giving up because it was too hard. I feel lucky because it only took 7 years to take my first deer and that was with a rifle

I can relate!!

Bad accident in 93 left me unable to do many times. Worst of them was no more Golf or Bow Hunting and more than a year of no firearms shooting! ( After a few months I still shot indoor winter Bullseye 22 RF)

Any how. A few years back, my pop bought us both Xbows!! As we some enjoyed so many decades of bow hunting that all stopped when I couldnt go anymore. We shoot them at targets when we can. Im sighted solid @ 20/30 yards. But bought a scope from same company and need to set different ranges once FPS is learned.

thats been a few years now and altho I do shoot the cross bow. Even cocking that is limited. Something about those motions really is uncomfortable. Not immediately but for few days after the deed...

ANYHOW, I need to do some final adjustments and hoping to collect My first Xbow animal tjis season!

CW, look into one of the cranking crossbow winches for cocking your bow.
A shoulder separation that gets stiff when cold effectively ended all but very early season bowhunting for me. I now own and hunt with two Excalibur recurve crossbows.(since 2014)
I know they make a removable winch type arrangement for cocking and one of my hunting partners has a Ten-Point with a built in winch.
There is nothing like an October dawn in a treestand in Northern Michigan.

Ours are also excaliber recurve bows. Something about that is more appealing to me or the compound X bows. Mine is supposed to be pretty fast. Pops is smaller and lighter.

I bought a Mission 310 a few years ago, got a couple does with it, but don't hunt it much. It's got a mile of creep to the trigger with no warning of when it's finally going to let off. The Hawke scope that came on it is calibrated fairly well to 40 yards, but with all the creep I don't trust my trigger control when excited over a deer. They recommend changing the string every 100 shots and now there isn't a dealer closer than 100 miles.

My CB has the hand crank. It is AMAZING! I can use the 10Pt 50% letoff system, just, with my rebuilt shoulders. But got lucky and ran into the crank system bow and it is the only way to go as you get older!

On some forgotten thread, BliksemE300 posted a picture of him shooting his scouterized Swede. I wanted to post a picture of mine, but didn't have one till today.

Non-matching and of 1901 manufacture with a threaded muzzle, though it was too shy and not included in the picture. A previous owner lightly sanded the stock and slathered it with so much varnish that it required a couple days to remove. I then applied hand rubbed three(?) coats of tung oil, and installed a Timney trigger. Till about four years ago, using the minuscule sights weren't much of a problem, but my vision isn't what it was then, thus the scourterization. The no-gunsmithing scope base is from BadAce, and the 2-7X34 scope is from China via Amazon.
Its accuracy loads are Lyman's 266469 (.269") and either IMR 4227 or 2400, and a 140-grain jacketed and IMR 4350.
The sunshine shows the wrinkles she tries unsuccessfully to hide, she's been round the block a few times, but I don't hold any of it against her.

Seems I was optimistic about the pewter haul . The napkin holder we got today brought it up to 61 oz for $9 . $2.35/lb beats the heck lead free solder or 50/50 even .

Good day all in all only got drown a little bit going to Ft Smith this morning . Dumped the rain gauge this morning at 4.5" for yesterday and the night before . Didn't get enough at the house to wet the gauge today .

had to go down to the valley again today.
this time to pick up the kids glasses.
of course this includes a sweep of every discount store down there too.

I found an old potato fork that I gave 5 bucks for, the handle is in need of some sort of work since it looks like someone found it out in the desert after 70 years or so.
I'm thinking of just smoothing it up, giving it a soaking wet coat of urethane and leaving all the dried out cracks.

had to make a trip over to the sportsmans while the wife was rummaging through the one store.
that cost me 200 bucks for a bunch of stuff I probably don't need.
but,, you know,,, it was on sale.
everything but the 4lb. jug of green-dot,, I paid full price for that.

I put linseed oil, cut 50% with Mineral spirits, on old dry/cracked garden tool handles.
First coat, I let it sit in the sun all day, then re-coat the next day...the second coat may take several days to dry.

Cutting up downed trees for the last 3 days. I have pulled some HUGE trees out of people yards and off their house with my little Jeep Liberty. Put it in 4 low and just off idle it has plenty of power to drag 4-5 foot dia trees out to the streets.

Been hunting with a Mission Lite, the last three or four years. Very happy with it. Trigger is as good or better than most OTB rifles. I didn't opt for the conventional scope. I prefer a red dot. Mounted a Trijicon reflex with a one minute dot on it. Sighted in for 20 yards. Shoots flat enough to be only a few inches low at 40 yards............just need to hold a tad higher. It's not super fast but it was one of the quietest X-bows on the market, at the time. I adapted a removable Kwikee Kwiver to mine. Removable light is not for hunting. Has a red lens installed for walking out in the dark, while keeping one hand free. Never changed cables or string. Not noticing any wear.

It would be comparable to the current model:
