We always pick spots next to people who are throwing their brass in the bucket, (you ave to pick up brass after each shooting time) Wife offers to clean up the brass for them if they don't want it.. They never say no.... many days I've walked out with 3x what we shot.. Range rules - can not take brass from bucket. Never makes it to bucket and they have never said we can't. We do shoot there a lot so maybe they just look other way but free brass is free brass....

Well, the fires have burned up at least 3 of my favorite hunting areas.
All NF land and BLM land is closed to travel as of last week.
We won`t be allowed in the areas affected by the fires until mother nature puts them completely out.
That will be after deer season.

I'm concerned that the wonks who run our NF will come up with similar extensions of the existing closure in my deer zone as well. The opening day is 10/10, and it runs until Veteran's Day weekend. Hoping that the last 2 weeks of the season have an open forest available to hunt.

ETA--When I was younger (1970s) much of the really problematic chaparral country on the south slopes of the San Bernardino NF were under a Fire Closure from June 1 until either 1" of measurable rain and/or one foot of snow had fallen. This kept people OUT of the light fuels/dry brush areas that light off so easily, and also allowed road crews to maintain infrastructure and access routes into and out of the fire zones. There was also actual FORESTRY under way during this time, too.

That all changed in the early 1980s, not sure of the exact date since I was working in Indio at the time. At the same time, active forestry largely stopped--downwood permits were cut back and standing fuelwood permits became unobtainium--and understory growth was unmanaged entirely. At the same time they blew open access to year-round, and largely stopped maintaining fire roads, closing many and re-naming them "bike paths" or "hiking trails". Idiocy.

California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
What’s really crazy is that these people paying these prices are still leaving their brass on the ground.
And all to our benefit.

During a recent range session, a young man and first-time gun owner, who was at the bench next to me, was blasting through a lot of Winchester USA .223 and leaving the empty brass on the ground. After politely asking, I came home with 124 of them.

The range's spent brass policy is it's theirs, unless it's yours and you pick it up, or you ask another shooter for his and pick it up. At one time, that wasn't the policy and I spent more time picking up others' brass than picking up mine. Still, I've more than I'll ever need and will continue to pick up as much as I can.

Chihuahua's were originally bred to hunt Pigs NOT! All dogs are hunters until bred out. Most small dogs were ratters, larger were shepherd or boar hunting(Russian). There is a claim theyall descended from wolves but I personally don't agree.

Thanks Rick
8 man football is a bit different. 38-0. Grandson played QB and OLB and has a good game
The 6 man scores in Montana look like Basketball scores. We have had a couple of kids with in 150 miles play 8 man in HS and make it to the NFL. I always wonder what their team mates think.

This same team played 6 man last year because of a lack of players. This year there are 11 7th and 8th graders out, two of them girls, and one of them starts. A couple years ago there was a lineman on one of the 8 man teams this school plays that ended up at Minnesota. Think he's starting these days.

The three buckets that came home with me today. I have another 5 gallon bucket full in the loading room. Should be in the 230 pounds of scrap brass. Local place will hopefully give me $1.25/lb. No way do I complain about $250+ coming home with me.

My wife asked if scrapyards pay cash. She was afraid I would have to trade for lead.

What's with the bucket of 308s in the front? Is that 1F military stuff or worn out, mixed, unknown?

Mixed. Some is worn out, some once fire military. Sort of a mishmash. Some of the military has a split neck, likely very old brass.

Wish I could find someone around here that took empty cartridge's for scrap. The yards will not touch them. We can throw them in the trash but nobody will buy them. They won't buy home made ingot either.

I was inspired so I called around. I found 1 yard that takes them 40 miles away. So 80 mile round trip. That would take me about $20 in gas up and back in my truck.
They give 85 cents a pound. I have probably 20 lb of bad brass. So that would give me a profit of $3. Guess I will have to wait till I get a hundred pounds. But at least now I know I can make something from it.

Guess I need to call around. Don't have much cartridge brass, but have nearly 3 five gallon buckets of bullet jackets from smelting range scrap.

Taking a break for lunch, been cutting up the doe from the muzzleloader hunt. Nearside shoulder had a lot of bloody connective tissue and blood clot pushed in between the layers of muscle even though the roundball impacted a couple inches behind it. I boned out the shoulders and took out the lower leg separately. Going to try smoking the shanks and lower leg for a couple hours and then braising them. Son made barbarosa? out of them on my grandsons deer and it was pretty good.

Mowed the grass, cut weeds. Planted some mums. Got some branches off the roof.
Finally got $20 ahead, bought 2 2x10's. So I could make my 2 end trusses proper.
Went to build my pattern for the shed trusses tonight. So I could just go to town and get them all done. Then realized somebody stole my wood clamps, a box of screws, and about 5 of my precut truss boards, from under my tarp.
So hardware store is closed and trying to figure out how to get my pattern truss done without clamps, or screws before dark .Guess I just best call it a day. My blood pressure is up and I just need to let things go before my wife gets upset too.
Do not know what upsets me more the fact someone took from me or the fact I just paid 11 a piece for 2x4x10's.
