Extrapo lated some loads for my 310g bullet in the Whelen.

Ironically I found corresponding data for both 358's Winchester and Norma!! But only RL15 for whelen. Well I have only about 1/4# of RL15. Was going to try N140 but ran across a 3031 load of 40g. Ran it thru a couple calculators and QLlooks safe but vel is higher than my target so I started 36.5g stopped @ 38 this test.

Mixed up another 2 gallons of OJ and tonic , cussed the pharmaceutica , breifly stared at the 25# of sealed coffee we don't drink on any sort of a regular basis , Monday slot in the med box ....... What about Saturday ?

Gotta find that #3 or #4 Phillips I haven't seen since the last drum brakes so I can get the center cap off Ms truck and change her tire to gimp home . Nice design stupid exicution , Chrysler New Yorker /5th Avenue caps weren't any better though but they defeatable w/o the key .....

Kids work ethics .......its a provided , paid , required for shift uniform . How hard is that to understand ? Your shift starts at noon , you can't clock in before 11:54 , you live 6 blocks just because 12:04 is in the window doesn't mean I want to be there when it's not my shift , I have a 25 mile round trip to be back at 9:00 pm , I haven't slept since 9:00 yesterday morning , 3rd shift isn't a thing I do well anyway .

The 8 hr this last morning are still 4 short but my back and shoulders have this strange idea I've been horizontal long enough . My low thinks my shoulders are idiots and would really like a double rye , and 2 aspirin to shut them up for just a little while longer . Social conventions however suggest that a double at 9:30 in the morning may be indicative of a problem , but then so is having rules for drinking ....... Also all of the angry parts have to go back at 1600 and stay for another 8 hours .......more stupid rules but they're somebody else's so it doesn't count towards my drinking .

Disclaimer , I talk a good game but household consumption is roughly 4 drinks or 12 oz bottles per month including beer , wine , and liquor . So yeah I guess I have a problem with stale beer .

Waco - you just annealed the mouth? Put GC on the rest of the 145gr. Swirled in PC bucket but humidity is 74% so took a little longer to get complete coverage.

Doesn't matter what the job is, 3rd shift sucks!!! I never could sleep in the daytime. By night 3 of 5 I was a zombie. Best of luck and safe travels!

It seems the gods of machine tool acquisition have smiled upon me, miserable wretch that I am! While sucking down my 3rd cup'a joe this AM I spotted an ad for "tools" on CL. The pic looked like a lathe and sure enough it was, and it was close to home. I did my usual hem and haw and finally called. Long and short of it, I'm the owner of a Logan Model 820 metal lathe! No, it's not the 16" Leblonde Regal I lust after, but it is a 10x24 in decent, if filthy, shape. Got a few basic goodies with it but nothing exotic. This is all steel and cast iron, probably post WW2, an actual industrial quality small lathe. Already have manuals enroute. Pick it up Wednesday. This will be a major step up fromt he ancient 6" Atlas I've been abusing for 40+ years. Big thing is it's got a quick change gearbox. Only downside is it's a flatbelt machine, so I'll be listening to "tick-tick-tick" as I work. Of course the original flat belt is long gone, but that's not a big deal. Even has the factory legs and chip pan. Needs some TLC, but I can handle that.

Had a heck of a time getting the F350 going this AM. It was cold enough (-25F) that the diesel in the salmander I just bought was gelling. Of course I didn't have any of the anti gel juice on hand. Ended up taking my big weed burning torch and letting the heat rise up under the engine. Between that and the 200 amp jump starter it finally coughed to life. Got it all warmed up and had to air up a tire. Pulled in front of the garage to do that and it died. Hit the key and "click-click-click"!!! What?!!! This thing had been charging/warming up for 20 minutes! Threw my hi dollar HF battery tester on it and got like 8 volts!!! What the heck? I'll tell you what the heck- I had nice shiny battery terminals, but the strap on the pos was not as tight as it looked. I hate those "repair" terminals. Flopped the strap over so the cables were pinched more and jumped it again. Hard no more problems after that, but it cements my resolve to get some better terminals.

Shot the .45-70 rolling block.

My local friend and occasional shooting pard showed up with his brand spanking new Ruger Mini-14, and let me empty a 10-round magazine loaded with five-rounds. Fun stuff, but not enough for me to want on. I will say that its 18" barrel creates noticeably more noise and muzzle blast than my Ruger American's 22" barrel. I think the rifle's butt stock dislodged my right ear's Mickey Mouse ear, because that ear is still ringing seven hours later.

It's not as if my vision that makes the rolling block's tang sight's peep look like it was full of lint is bad enough, now I'm thinking my right ear's moderately severe hearing loss has moved down to the severe level. Man, I hope my wife's mumbling isn't any worse tomorrow morning.

My M4gery with the welded brake sounds like artillery without the can. Someone was commenting on it not being all that quiet suppressed (I was wearing ears), so I safed it, removed the can, told everyone real loud to stick their fingers in their ears, and let a few rip. Turns out the can was doing a FINE job. My next one got an 18" barrel and 22" is an even better idea.

3 of the lathes I learned on were flat leather belt drive (2 Hendeys and an 1898 Hardinge Cataract screw-cutting toolroom lathe). 3 Avey drill presses were also flat leather belt drive. By the end of my apprenticeship I'd probably laced nearly a couple of dozen belts.

That Logan 820 should make a very decent gunsmithing lathe. Get rid of the rocker/lantern toolpost and put a KDK, Dorian or Aloris toolpost on it, you'll be up to your ankles in chips in no time.

Agree on the tool post. I never cared for the rocker type. My dad made a version of a quick change that was much nicer. This machine should be stiff enough to make use of some carbide tooling, something the Atlas really isn't stiff enough for.

I actually own a belt lacer! Round baler belting uses alligator type lacing. I can live with the click click if I can get some work done. Probably end up like the cracks in the old concrete highways- a comforting sound in the background.

Don't forget the little rawhide pin to connect the laces together.

Not just rigidity you need to make good use of carbide tooling. Also, horsepower at higher spindle speeds. I suspect, in the long run, you'll find that high speed steel (HSS) or HSS/CO with 4-8% cobalt will be more serviceable. If you're having trouble with your toolbit annealing from heat, try tantalum tungsten, AKA "Tantung". Stellite is another material that has enhanced wear and heat resistance, while sharpening and resisting chipping like HSS.
