they been working on blasting kidney stones to pieces with ultrasound waves recently.
they are reporting slightly over 90% success.

i remember going in and having a heated ultra sound treatment on my ankle as a kid, i don't even remember what i done to it now but it required some time on crutches.
which totally sucked since i also had a cast on one of my arms at the time [from a previous incident]

so today.
it started out good, i got the card board over the carrot and beet seeds, trimmed out a ton of suckers and some dead stuff out of the crabby tree.
took the wood fence apart and got it all tightened back up, and adjusted the gate to boot.
then i told the boy to mow the lawn,,, and that's where things went all down hill.
i walked in the house and made some cold coffee, sat down and almost got the cup to my lips...........
first he broke the stop handle [again and i'm now out of parts] so i done a work around to get it running, he managed to screw that up somehow.
fine get the new mower out.
it won't run... looks like i can sorta make it run,,, needs the carb cleaned all up.
in the meantime,, i spill about 900 bucks worth of gas on the floor, my hair, get some in my mouth, on my shoes.... siigh well it's almost 10:30 anyway.

i guess tomorrow is rebuild a carb day.

on the bright side i did get to take a 2 mile walk across town with Littlegirl.
no, we didn't have to, but after the mower meltdown i decided it was a good idea.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
The suns up and it's not raining- yet! 3 million projects, I have little interest in any of them. Guess I'm in a mood. More coffee...

Since there was a deluge pretty much all day yesterday I decided to run to town and deposit some moola. That means I got curious and checked the ol'bank account. Found out I was being charged for a subscription to CBS on the Roku thingy. What!?!!! We don't have or want a subscription to CBS. So I spend 25 minutes on the phone to someplace where there's a lot of background noise and a very quiet talking lady who hasn't quite got the hang of talkin' Uh-Murican yet. Got it fixed eventually. Mentioned it to SWMBO last night. "Oh, that's Paramount, the channel we've been watching that new Star Trek show on. I'll pay for it!" Well shoot. So why is it charged as CBS??? Wasted time. The new Star Trek wasn't that great anyway.

Compared to that little goat rope I had a relatively benign day.

Sue asked me to make a willow trellis for the raised bed pole beans can climb this Summer. Cut four 10 foot long willows and arched them over the raised bed. A process greatly sped up by having the old brackets still in place. The willows were lovely straight, mostly without branches, and flexible as a bamboo. After I got them up Sue takes bright colored shoe laces and criss crosses the arches with the laces creating a artsy, quirky looking form of functional garden art.

I painted targets, mowed the range with the 435, Sue mowed the yard with the 188. The car dealer called and asked where the locking lug nut key was for Sue's Escape. It was getting an oil change and the mechanic was attempting to find the source of a noise in the left front wheel area. Sue drove the Ranger down to the .22 range to get me so I could call the dealer back. I did, and explained to them that the last people to remove a wheel on the car was them when they put the new tires on last Summer after we broke a couple of belts in the factory Michelins. Long pause on the phone then the service tech asked if new regular lug nuts were okay if they had to wreck the locking nuts.

Back to mowing. It has been dry and mowing is a dirty dusty job, particularly on the range and on the fire break trail around the prairie. Plus the tree pollen is fierce right now and mowing only makes it worse.

When I finished mowing the white under coat primer had dried on all 40 targets and the sighter gongs and I went back and painted the targets fluorescent orange. More crap to inhale.

Got back to the house, the car was done drove to town and retrieved same. The noise was accumulated dirt in a caliper. No charge for that inspection and they only charged for the oil change. That is why we have patronized them for 16 years. Returned home and grabbed a string trimmer and whacked the places around the yard where a mower can't go. If any of you are contemplating an electric string trimmer I can highly recommend the Stihl. It was just a joy to use compared to a gas model. It won't replace the gas tool for rough work, but for ordinary trimming it is light, quiet, and powerful. They claim a 25 minute run time on a charge. That must be measured as a continuous run time in heavy weeds because I used it twice for half hour trimmings and each time I put the battery back in the charger and it still had 3 of 4 bars remaining. Jon used it Sunday to trim under and around the target rails and the shooting stations and and it had only used one bar.

Called in for Supper. Pan seared marinated nubby buck back loin, fresh asparagus, raw fried potatoes, and home made frozen chocolate pie. As tender as the venison was he apparently had never had an impure thought. As I savored the bites I thought I'd rather eat venison than any steak I'd ever had in a restaurant.

Yesterday was last day of school with the kids. Had a liitle reception for a few old guard teachers who were retiring. go back in today to finalize grades and such, but for me, I will work all Summer, Leadership camp I run will consume me for a while.

After not doing it in more than two years, been riding a motorcycle to work and back, gonna do it again today. Got the old Triumph back up and running and it is a fun little machine. It's pretty obvious that I'm out of practice riding so being real careful for a while, reflexes seem noticeably slower nowadays too.

Got to get some shooting donw now that we have some decent weather and some time.

I'm out of practice riding Me too. Quit in the 80s as traffic was so bad. Had a guy come by today to look at some yard/shrub problems, we'll see how bad the $ is. Just can't do much maintenance anymore and some stuff needs changing.

Mowing season just started in southern MN. I recently bought a newer improved Honda self-propelled mower, to replace the 10 yr old unit I've been using for a couple years...the old one always smoked a bit, then last fall I hit a steel post between my gooseberry plant and my clothesline, that I forgot about, the post stuck out of the ground about 3", which is just enough to stall the motor when the blade hit it. After that happened, the mower had a bit more vibration. So, the newer mower is awesome, and decided I didn't need a backup mower, so I sold it last week, got $200 for it...prices are always high when the season starts. Now that I read fiver's post, maybe I should have kept it?

over the weekend, I transplanted some young raspberry shutes, about 20 so far, enough for a new row, 4 of them look wilty, even after last nights rain. I also made three repairs to three different sections of rain gutter. Next up, is to scrape and paint two sides of the garage, that didn't get painted last year.

speaking of rain,
I got a bunch more seeds in the ground yesterday, right before the rain started.
Green beans, Okra, Nasturtium, Beets.
And a second planting of Kale, Radish, Spinach, Cabbage.

Saw surgeon yesterday. I'm scheduled for carpal tunnel and cubital tuneel surgery in about three weeks on my left arm, then about three weeks after that the same surgery on my right arm. It's a same day in-and-out procedure. I'll have to deal with some ancillary issues such as getting from the bathroom door to the toilet using a walker when I am not wearing my prosthetic leg but I'm sure with a little creative thought I can deal with that. Need to get my family doctor's OK to stop my blood thinner ten days before surgery but I just saw my cardiovascular guy a couple weeks ago and I got a clean bill from hiim so don't think that will be a problem.

Getting my new prosthetic leg next Tuesday. It's lighter and fits better and should be easier to put on and take off so maybe that will help.

Still two months away from getting my lower dentures but it seems like the implants they put in my jaw are healing normally so hopefully they can finish up this process and I can get back to eating with a full set of choppers.

Lucky the shopcat is doing really well, eyes clearing up, eating and drinking normally, urinary tract and bowels seem to be working fine. He's mostly eatng and sleeping a lot but when he's awake he's starting to play little and run a few steps with that kitten bounce they have at that age. It's been a week and he's eaten five cans of cat food. I've been letting him explore the shop a little but he goes back into the office after a few minutes and finds a snuggly spot to curl up.

Not sure at this point whether I passed the kidney stone or it has moved to a place with less nerve connections, but almost no pain. Pain dropped off dramatically last night about 1 AM. This is probably number 8 for me. Pretty sure I drank a half gallon of water yesterday and a couple of cups of ginger tea.
Going to take it easy (easier) today.

Cold morning and only reach 60 today but was able to finish all the beds in the large round garden and actually planted 6 tomato seedlings that were getting large! Rain this evening and temps will be soring by the weekend...they are calling for High's in the 90's ....pretty crazy since the mornings low was 42 deg.
Hopefully will start on the "black fabric" garden tomorrow. Pull the garden fabric off, turn the soil and ammed it and replace the fabric & maybe plant more plants.
Wife wants the pool opened up this weekend...have to get some new pump hoses, but if it in the 90's this weekend I will be in my cool basement workshop.

i broke down and stuck some Kohlrabi seeds and another row of peas in the ground today.
a couple of the Pea plants in the G-house are starting to get a couple of flowers on them, i figure about another month and they will come out and a tomato will take their place.

I'm having a real hard time resisting the urge to put out some plants, and i might could maybe get away with putting the green beans out in the last box with a cover, but that will just delay putting out the bell peppers,,,, unless i go buy some more plastic and start running pipe over the long box.

anyway the stupid carburetor was giving me some real grief today.
there was nuthin even remotely varnished when i got into it,, so i tore out the fuel line, the filter is good, the hose is good, all the runs took air flow no problem..
mmmmmmMMM!!!!
then i stopped and really thought about it, we've only used this thing like 4 maybe 5 times since it was bought and it never really run very good.
it's always acted like it's starving for fuel, and it never had any power.
back off it come.
so i cleared out the runs, then got the 'round file' [IE dremel tool] out and matched the back opening to the block, opened the front side, and smoothed out the barrel.
then i got out my Carter Carburetor jet tools [AKA tiny jet numbered drill bits] and worked the Jet over, opening it from a slightly loose 22 to a 23 then a 24.
don't pump the primer 3 times now,, 1 is plenty.
then i broke the seal on the idle stop and bumped it almost another full turn.
i also set the spark plug gap .003 tighter.

now it runs, and it runs what i'd call damn near perfect.
it just hums when running, and doesn't miss a beat when it hits some slightly tall grass.
it would about choke out on anything over 6"s before.

That's real mechanicin' there.

I'm gonna be done with mechanicin' here in about a week. Got the job offer phone call today and accepted, back to rocket surgery in the air conditioning after a 24 year hiatus sometime early next month. My boss was not amused in the slightest when I have him notice, but he didn't throw me out either. I told him my ship finally came in and I'm right ready to unload it. Saving 60 miles a day driving at $4.299/gallon won't hurt me any, either.

Crap. Not done. Dad's '01 TJ sits in front of my machine shop doors with #3 rod bearing spun. It never ends....

Ian, I'm interested in hearing about your new job.

I'd be ecstatic if local gas prices were $4.29. This past Sunday Costco's price was $5.39, and I'm sure it's increased since then. The other stations are in the $5.89 to $6.19 range. I'm going to need another retirement
part-time job, just to be able to afford to buy gas.

i'm just glad i had the tools, and that it worked.
i was really afraid i was gonna have to tear into the valve train. [yeah it was running that poor]

i was kind of impressed with the little carb. [kind of an upside down/sideways carter design]
the design is super simple, but it has a drain on the bowl [which will drain the tank] a nice float and needle setup, and a real Jet.
some of the other stuff is kind of chintzy engineering, but you gotta keep costs down somewhere.
the other thing i like is the pull rope assembly is bolted on and not riveted so a replacement is possible, and super easy to replace.

Line engineer for a private aerospace contractor that's building a plant by the airport a few miles from my house, basically the same work I did for Boeing after college minus the union balderdash and Boeing-brand assho---I mean eggheads. They specialize in wiring harnesses and have a temporary facility up and going with a skeleton crew right now. I'm phase one of many to come of the local hiring sprees as they get all the holes filled and cogs polished on some new contract builds so they can let a few people who opened the plant (and will be training the first new-hires) get back home to North Dakota where the company's other interests are located.
